  • We compare the STOCK VGT 4TH Gen Cummins Turbocharger against the direct replacement Billet Tater Built 63mm/68mm unit. Backed by a Ezlynk engine monitoring device we dive into the data and help explain why upgrading your Turbocharger is a MUST for engine longevity.

Boost gauge is pegged so interpreting data is hard. And if the exhaust drive pressure reading is off factory sensor- that is absolute pressure and not gauge pressure.

Have a 16 ram cummins 130k miles stock turbo, upgraded fuel, injection pump and lift pump, built trans making a little over 500whp. She’s holding up fine but am looking to do a turbo soon maybe, I love pushing this stock trucks to there limits

I've got a 2012 with a 66mm 2nd gen swap, stage 3 cam, tune, exhaust and intake manifolds, and otherwise stock fuel. Usually keeps a 1:1 DP ratio or better.

Can you do a 2nd gen swap with a vgt turbo?

The stock map sensor will only read 36 psi, unless you have an aftermarket psi gauge or 10 bar map sensor were not seeing what boost was actually made unless I missed it somewhere

Unfortunately we only had a ezlynk for the boost data. No external ports

@@POINTBLANKPERFORMANCE so then it might not have as bad a drive pressure issue then, good to see the turbo did lower the drive pressure though.

@@BigMilkTank this i agree. i bet you it’s hitting into the 40s for boost psi! which would get a way better ratio!

How about a Tater built 67mm VGT or a TurboTime 67mm VGT? I hear they use larger turbines and ported the turbine side as well

TH-cam User Hey good question sir unfortunately right now none of our clients has done that combo. If we get one then we will shoot a video of it and provide the data!

Would love to see this turbo or a cheetah bolted to a steed speed exhaust manifold and see if it drops the drive pressure

Straight piped 63/67 he351cw sound more like a jet than my 6.0 vgt

Have you guys sold many of the TaterBuilt turbos and how have your experiences been dealing with TaterBuilt?

I have a question. I have a 2014 cummins with stock vgt turbo and I keep throwing a code when my engine light comes on I believe it’s p0046 something to do with actuator. My turbo is still working but when it throws my light it takes forever to build boost. What can I do without spending a ton of money right now on a new turbo. Also love the vids very helpful.

When this code “ boost control A Circuit Range Performance “ shows up first I always look a VGT duty cycle actual and desired to see if it’s working at all. If it but won’t meet desired I replace the actuator . If the turbocharger doesn’t actuate at all I check voltage if good then move on pulling the actuator , manually try to move the “vanes” if they are not locked up I replace the actuator . If the vanes are “ locked” replace the entire turbocharger sir .

I was throwing the same code p0046, I talked to 3 diesel shops. Everyone of them said you can replace the actuator but they seen it happen to many times soon as you replace the actuator shortly after you're turbo will go out an then ruin your new expensive actuator. Replace the whole turbo.
