I love how the film has no true villain. Just groups of people with good intentions who ultimately use conflict to bring about their goals. It's a great film with a well conveyed message against war.

Lady Eboshi does not have good intentions. She wants to clearcut the forest and massacre the people (gods) living there, and her motivation is just money and industry. She'll share that wealth with disenfranchised people, sure--but it's blood money, so so what?

Princess Mononoke was the first 'mature' film I accidentally rented as a kid. I loved My Neighbor Totoro by Studio Ghibli and figured similar merriment would follow. Not knowing someone would get their head chopped off by a mystic arrow in the opening sequences pretty much ended my childhood. I remember hurriedly and tearfully running to the VCR to turn it off. Watching it from the eyes of a 30-year-old, it's absolutely fantastic cinema.

I saw this in the theater when it was first shown in the US. There were several parents with small children in the theater, and they were clearly stunned at the beheading scene, but I don't think any of them actually left. Not that I could see anyway. I have to imagine most of the movie would actually be pretty boring for kids.

If there was ever a film Miyazaki should have been nominated (before The Wind Rises was released) for the best director Oscar, this was it. Mononoke Hime should have been nominated for best foreign film, best director, best score, best screenplay, and I know it's a long shot, but best picture as well. Easily outclassed the typical Oscar bait nominated back then, and still to this day.

remember the first time I watched this film. I was around eight at the time.
The movie freaked me out so much, I still remember how I felt while I was watching it.
Nago, Okkoto, the lepers, the forest spirit, the kodama, those all particularly stuck with me, and frightened my eight-year-old mind. But, I didn't let those initial memories keep me away from the film. I watched it again, and again as I got older, and every time I watched it, I understood and appreciated it a bit more.

It's so incredibly rare to see an adult film at all, much less in animation. There's no villain, there's no hero, it's just conflict where both sides are justified. This is an amazing film.
I wish more adult films like this were made. I'd consider Unforgiven to be one of them as well, although it's very different. In that, every character is flawed.

So as a kid in the 90s I remember seeing a clip of wild boars on a mountain side and a big white boar. I could never pin point where I saw it or from what movie or show. Literally more than a decade goes by and still that one scene I remember. Maybe it was the fear of the sound it made when it roared, it stuck in my head for years. Then today I just happened to click something on Netflix and lo and behold it felt somewhat familiar. As soon as I saw the first boar I asked myself could it be? And I cannot believe that I found it. A memory I didn't know I had. I just had to let someone know. I enjoyed every moment of it and its now one of my favorites!

This movie is amazing beyond words, even if your not a fan of Anime in general. All I can say is every adult should watch this movie, it is not a movie for a child to watch. It has a dark overall tone and dialogue that can only be appreciated by adults. Think of Fern Gully's twin older brother, who is into the dark side of the occult. The animation is flat out gorgeous throughout the movie and the voice acting is incredibly well done compared to a lot of other Anime works like Ninja Scrolls. Scenes like the first time you hear the forest ape spirits speaking, are among the most dark, yet mystical I have ever seen portrayed in a movie. This is a much watch for anyone who is a fan of cinema in general, it definitely leaves you with a feeling inside.

Years ago, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was out promoting 'The Wind Rises' on some late night show and she asked the host (not one of the really big ones) if he had heard of Mononoke. The jerk host snickered because he heard the word "Princess" and probably thought it was something silly and superficial like Disney. I know Miyazaki is known in the US, but I wish it was more so. I think Moana might be the first Disney female character who gets anywhere close to Miyasaki girls and women.

The greatest anime movie of all times, greatest then all others masterpieces. The peak of Hiyao miazaki career. His greatest achievement. He may be a bad dad like his son Goro always stated, but he is the greatest story-teller and animator of all time. For Me, Mononoke - hime is the greatest of his achievements. Nothing comes close to it. Its the most perfect animated movie with layers upon layers of philosophy and Theology and story-craft that more million years human kind can't achieve that. Mononoke hime is like the perfect movie.

You don't have to see this movie often, because then it loses most of its magic (I don't deny that everything, the magic stays in it forever), or epics. I've seen this movie in big gaps three times in my life. And that's enough for me. Everything in this film is epic: music, fights, characters, landscape, story ... I think the most apical film ever made. I would like to write a book that would be as amazing as a movie, but that's probably not possible. But I still believe. For about half a year now I have been serving Mononoke hime, Journey to the west, Legend of Ashitaka and Demon god. These instrumental songs were composed by the most wonderful composer: Joe Hisaishi. All his compositions are full of the highest epicism, cuteness, melancholy, courage, magic and much more. These songs always bring me hope in everything: in life, in writing books, beliefs in the good in the world ... Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are the most apt films by Miyazaki, everyone has to admit that. Then more hilarious and cheerful films such as Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Laputa, The wind rises, Spirited away and others are other most legendary films that everyone should really see.
Today, for the fourth time, I'll look at Princess Mononoke and enjoy it as much as I did when I first saw it.

I saw this last night at a movie theater in Tokyo.
Currently in Japan, as of August 2020, some of Miyazaki films (“Nausicaa”, “Princess Mononoke”, ”Spirited away”) are on movie theaters nationwide. Surprisingly, these have been dominating the top three of the the box office ranking for several weeks.
Decades ago, I saw them at the theater when they rolled out. But now after seeing all of them again this time, I felt that I have become able to understand them more deeply than I did when I was a child and student.

I can understand you don't like Brazilian president. But that's a lie. The Amazon problem in South America, which evidence suggests it began in Bolivia, all of the sudden, when that was of public knowledge, everyone shutted their mouths about the fact the Amazons were burning. Again, it seems problems only count when their used to blame the one you want to blame. Stupid politicians talki about Climate change and Global warming, that's bullshit. It's a way much deeper issue to think that you can solve it with simple sustainability. I mean, you can see what are the politics that really are moving on and improving sustainability, and that's great, but that's not gonna make anything about Climate change.
Capitalists and Libertarians are probably the type of society that are less destructive to the planet and are the best examples in the world about sustainability. Everyone else, they only talk and say nice things, but act very differently.

I'm a Japanese. Sorry for my bad English. We, Japanese, think that his movie does not depict the conflict between nature and humans. Japan is a country of animism. God is not one. It has been believed that God resides in all things. People have respected and feared mountains, trees, water, and animals. But, We lost that respect when we learned that human power could overcome it. And the Japanese, who lost their animism, began to invade nature. Shishigami's death means the death of humans respect for the nature. We killed our Gods. This movie depicts the comflict between human's evolution and mistakes. Or regret and hope.
