I'm moving to Halifax from UK for work, would I be counted as a resident? If not, would it be better for me to rent long term? At what point are you considered to be 'living' in Halifax?
I’d say that anybody who is working in Halifax would be counted as a resident of Nova Scotia yes. One of the hardest things is that the government has not put out any clarification about what makes people a resident of Nova Scotia
Thank you for the informations. A really “bomb” for summer house owners from Germany. Can I trust the government or have I to pay next year 6% every year non resident property tax. The main problem is that we have no chance to be a resident of Nova Scotia, we spent every year 5 month in Nova Scotia and spent thousands of $ in the province.
Yeah it's a bit of a tough one to swallow if you are a non-resident and not planning on being a resident. The 5% is on the purchase of a place only. The 2% property taxes is the annual extra property taxes every year you own the place
I've grown up in Nova scotia, visit evey year and plan to buy a home relatively soon to live in at some future date (rented out until that time). Would I be hit with these taxes as well?
Hi Ron - sorry for the late reply on this! If you are Canadian and you rent to Nova Scotians then these taxes won't apply to you no ;) Let me know if you need some help finding the right place
I'd think so yes but there is a 3 month wait to apply for that as well once you arrive here. It'll be interesting to see how they do this - still no details yet🤨
That’s crazy! Good to know cause we were planning to move there but now no..no..noway!
Well the situation has changed and as long as you are moving here they have reversed the decision and the tax is no longer applicable!

Just call it the 'discrimination tax' against non residents and non Canadians, which is exactly that, nothing else
Just got my property tax bill today; up 250% from last year. Not a complaint, just sayin.
Hi Roy. Most are going up as a result of the overall market increase. Are you in the CAP program??
@@HalifaxHomesandLifestyles What is the CAP program?
Maybe a N.S. health card is suitable to prove residency.
