This is the greatest tribute to Gene Roddenberry possible/ The attention to detail and the acting are top notch. I love the period-correct props and uniforms and the use of the original sound-effects and theme and background music. These episodes really are as good as TOS.

Too bad Vic couldn't finish "Enterprise" (with Manny Coto's help- instead of Kurtzman's). They deserve the last 3 seasons. Maybe do it on You Tube instead of CBS, but then copyright laws would get in the way as usual and the actors think they're "too cold".

So true. And this one - there are plenty of this & Star Trek Continues that are more fully new stories - is kind of a remake/prequel of a TNG episode, but it is so much better than the TNG one. Sadly, the TNG one had promise and was ok, but somehow because it was Troy and the way it was done, it felt weirdly sexist or strange, and not that interesting 🤔 for whatever reasons -- this one can be understood to be the same aliens, met 100 years or so earlier, which Picard I guess didn't know, having not memorised every Kirk log if he bothered to log it, but this story is so much better told!! And we learn more & it's more interesting and exciting. Proper Trek - and I agree that most of the best proper Trek these days is independent work like this.

@@gliberty42 I see this more of a TOS sequel than a TNG prequel. It doesn't have very good continuity with TNG. TNG Deltan does not have superhuman strength. Deltans here has superhuman strength. I see this and TNG as separate parallel sequels to TOS.

This series is SO good. I no longer think of it as 'really great for a fan production' ; It's simply a really great 4th season of TOS.
I've completely come to accept the cast in this Phase II version as being real. The achievement of the producers, directors, writers, actors, and also the SFX team, is stupendous. Why this was never picked up by Paramount and put into the market as a new vision of TOS is beyond me. I'm tellin ya straightup--this COULD NOT MISS if someone, somewhere in the tangle and glut of soulless movie producers, had the insight to see that NV Phase II would appeal to Star Trek devotees across the board.

Okay but what's the deal with those goofy overalls?!
I know the only footage found for the original Phase II pilot showed Xon wearing them(bell bottoms and all)but I never figured them for actual duty/work wear! I just thought it was disco night in the holo suite(it was shot in the 70s!).
Although the Uber Gay* scene in Fire & Blood did give me some hint to why Peter Kirk was wearing panty hose under them. LOL
*seriously, did you have to show a guy climbing on top of another guy's butt just to show they're gay? And yes I admit I would have been turned on if it was two hot girls doing that but the scene was a bit too Game Of Thrones. However, for the most part the sets have improper stage lighting, resulting in much darker sets than their TOS counterparts.

Funny how this shows up in my TH-cam recommendations list just a few weeks after I did the Set Tour up in Ticonderoga, and saw Shatner give a presentation at a nearby location. If you're a STAR TREK fan, you owe it to yourself to do the Set Tour where they filmed this. It's an almost 100% perfect re-creation of the Desilu set -- my sole quibble being that the dual STARDATE and SHIPBOARD TIME chronometers in front of the Captain's Chair on the Bridge didn't quite match what was depicted in the TOS episode
'The Naked Time" and is shown on the Franz Joseph STAR FLEET TECHNICAL MANUAL. They're supposed to have the STARDATE clock on the Left, counting upwards from "0000.0" to "9999.9" once every decade, and the SHIPBOARD clock on the Right, counting up from "00:00:00" to "23:59:59" once every day. Perhaps Mr. Cawley (et al.) built that part of the Bridge set based on a set of blueprints that had been later revised for "The Naked Time" when it was filmed, the plot requiring that they be able to see Time flowing backwards before they reversed the engines so that Time could begin to flow forwards again. Ah, well! Just one minor discrepancy on an otherwise perfect re-creation of the original sets! I hope Mr. Cawley & Crew don't let my minor criticism bother them -- that's the trouble with quibbles . . . 😁

Actually this WAS originally written for the Original Phase II canceled series that was in production in the 1970s. It was then adapted for TNG later, along with several other episodes. NV/P2 just restored it to where it was originally.

Super cool that star trek fans could put together such an incredibly high quality show; Kudos to the creators of "Star Trek New Voyages" for allowing fans to make comments. The creators of "Star Trek Continues" have turned the comments off, which is sad because Star Trek Continues is also very well done and fans are not allowed to comment.

They intended Chekov to be promoted to Chief of Security. That's why in Star Trek The Motion Picture, he's Weapon's Officer, and greeted Spock when he came aboard.

This was a lot better than the TNG version. Glad Jon Povill got to see his original version as written for the original Phase II back in the 70's come to life as seen here as that script was very well done. Talk about coming full circle in some ways. Makes me wish more of the aborted original Phase II series from the 70's with Kirk and Co. had gotten the chance to become reality as quite a few of those stories deserve to actually be filmed. At least we got to see The Child and Kitumba happen.

That episode was based on an episode of a Trek series that was to have been made in 1978, a sequel to the Original Series. However, things fell apart, and the series was never made. However, one of the episode scripts was adapted into the first Star Trek movie, and the script for "The Child" was adapted into the TNG episode of the same name.

Wow, this episode was 10 times better than the awful version from TNG. This is how the story should always have been told. If I remember correctly, the alien on TNG wasn't a "real" infant going through its natural life cycle (like here), but an adult alien who someday decided to turn himself into a child in order to experience how humans perceive childhood. Like a lab experiment. These circumstances robbed the story of a deeper meaning. But here, it's actually a new life that is born - and profoundly shaped.
I also loved how the girl said "To me, almost everything is beautiful." Because that's the whole point of seeing the world through the eyes of a child... to see the world for how wondrous it is, and enjoy it. The child actress showed that enjoyment on screen perfectly.

Kirk0 didn't seem to think outside the box; at least in this episode. When the translation of Cryantha was revealed as "unnecessary shell" it all came clear to me. They abandoned their planet because they were evolving into a higher life form. Their shell, so to speak, was their corporeal body. Once they had evolved, they no longer needed this shell. Hence "unnecessary shell". I can see Spock not jumping to conclusions, but Kirk? The best captain in the Federation starfleet? He should have realized this fairly quickly and given it serious consideration.
Still a very good story. Thanks for making this and sharing it.

So far with all that I have seen with Star Trek Phase II....I am glad that this was made. When Star Trek originally came about, I was always watching every episode, my favorite was The Trouble with Tribbles, it was so funny and with a good story line, plus I also kept a watch on the Space Program and NASA, the Lunar Landings, etc., ever since Sputnik was big in the news. I do believe space travel is possible, but humanity is NOT ready for it....too much Hatred and Greed going around, plus disrespect for life itself and too many wars in destroying others....we are way too childish in our actions towards such a venture, plus very unknowledgeable within our own time frame to accomplish such a feat of daring and lack the knowledge to do anything more than think about it......we are NOT taking care of this planet very well, and need to recycle more instead of throwing everything into landfills, etc. Even with all of our technology, we lack the true wisdom to use it properly.....what a waste of good minds and humanity.

Is it just me... or has Paramount been on a quest to screw Star Trek over, lately? I wasn't aware there were legal implications in non-profit fanfilms. That, and they hold everything they can back from Star Trek Online, for no other reason than to milk every dollar they can out of it.
I also hope there won't be a conflict between Phase II and Star Trek Continues, at any point.
