A bit of trivia for you - when the flag flew into the air and fell at the city of Edoras that was not scripted, it was not meant to fall at all. When it happened Jackson realised the significance of it and quickly added it into the final cut of the movie. This banner's fall is one scene that most remember about the film over all others because of the symbolism of it.

The site they selected to build Edoras was beautiful, but it was in a natural wind tunnel--it didn't take a wind machine to blow Eowyn's hair around like that. In fact the wind got so strong one day that it ripped Peter Jackson's glasses off and sent them tumbling down the mountain.

Amazing the effort all departments went through in this film. Rohan production design was based on old Scandinavian elements eg helmets, clothing, King's hall. For the theme they used a Norwegian violin/fiddle I think. Howard Shore devoted his life force to the score :)

The instrument you may be loving a lot isn’t a violin! It’s a Nordic instrument called the Hardanger fiddle! (Norwegian: hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood.
The F-holes of the Hardanger fiddle are distinctive, oftentimes with a more “sunken” appearance, and generally straighter edges (unlike the frilly, swirly F-holes of a violin). Four of the strings are strung and played like a violin, while the rest, named understrings or sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four. These extra strings are tuned and secured with extra pegs at the top of the scroll, effectively doubling the length of a Hardingfele scroll when compared to a violin.
The sympathetic strings, once fastened to their pegs, are funneled through a “hollow” constructed fingerboard, which is built differently than a violin’s, being slightly higher and thicker to allow for these extra strings. The resonant strings lay on the center of the special bridge, attached to extra hooks (or fine-tuners) on the tailpiece. Carved out within the center of the bridge is a smaller secondary “bridge”, or opening, designed specifically for these resonant strings to pass through. This is where the resonance is picked up & reverberated; as notes are played, the vibrations are sent through the bridge, where the sympathetics echo those notes.
      • The Hardingfele’s bridge is unique compared to other bowed instruments. It is somewhat taller and wider, resulting in the strings being slightly lower and farther apart; this allows for the easy execution of double-stops (playing of two strings at once). A similar technique is seen in some American old-time and bluegrass fiddlers, who intentionally move their bridge back a few millimetres closer to the tailpiece, for better double-stops.
The hardingfele is used mainly in the southwest part of Norway, whereas the ordinary violin (called flatfele, 'flat fiddle', or vanlig fele, 'common fiddle') is found elsewhere. The hardingfele is used for dancing, accompanied by rhythmic loud foot stomping. It was also traditional for the fiddler to lead the bridal procession to the church.
The instrument is often highly decorated, with a carved animal (usually a dragon or the Lion of Norway) or a carved woman's head as part of the scroll at the top of the pegbox, extensive mother of pearl inlay on the tailpiece and fingerboard, and black ink decorations called 'rosing' on the body of the instrument. Sometimes pieces of bone are used to decorate the pegs and the edges of the instrument.
The earliest known example of the hardingfele is from 1651, made by Ole Jonsen Jaastad in Hardanger, Norway. Originally, the instrument had a rounder, narrower body. Around the year 1850, the modern layout with a body much like the violin became the norm.
considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood.

Your memory of what has gone before and ability to incorporate all the many facets of the story and understand what is happening in real time rather than (like most of us) having to wait to have it spelled out in future scenes is absolutely refreshing. It's FUN to watch along with someone so sharp-witted.

Gandalf can indeed withstand the fire. It makes sense cause he is the one that wears "Narya" one of the 3 powerful elven rings in middle earth. Each ring enhances the user in one particular element for the most part, amongst other powers. Gandalf's ring is indeed none other than the ring of fire. Most of this knowledge in this kind of stuff is from the books but unfortunately are cut from the films.

99% of reactors think the Nazgûl flying mounts are dragons, but they are not. Tolkien describes them as fell beasts, probably some prehistoric creature that was brought back or kept alive by the dark powers. Watch The Hobbit to see a Tolkien dragon, much bigger.

"The fell beasts were winged creatures with beak and claws, similar to birds but much larger than any other flying beast. The creature possessed a naked body without feathers, a long neck, and a vast hide between its horned fingers. Furthermore, the body of the creature gave off a stench. While the exact origin of the beasts is unknown, they were likely bred by Sauron from a creature of the Elder Days to supply the Nazgûl with steeds. Sauron bred them as a challenge to the Great Eagles, their good-aligned counterparts. In Peter Jackson's trilogy of movies based on The Lord of the Rings, the Fellbeasts are depicted as Wyverns (a two legged, flying serpentine creature that is similar to a Dragon)."

Ok Gollum trivia not shown in the movies. After he lost his ring to Bilbo, he eventually left his caves to look for it. He traveled around a lot for many years but never found his way to the shire. Gandalf picked up on rumors of some menace that he figured must be Gollum. He asked Aragorn to hunt him. Aragorn finally found him and brought him to Gandalf for interrogation. That’s how Gandalf learned his name, Sméagol, and his back story (which he told Frodo). Afterwards Gandalf took him to Legolas’s realm of wood elves to keep him prisoner.
But he escaped. The reason Legolas turned up in Rivendell at all was not because Elrond called a meeting, but to get word to Gandalf about Gollum’s escape. So in the books, Gandalf and Aragorn and very likely Legolas had all spent time with Gollum, long before Frodo ever encountered him.

@29:34 Grima is ultimately just an "advisor" to the king. The people of Rohan and most of the king's court would not know that Grima poisoned Théoden's mind and was entirely responsible for all of their troubles. In the eyes of the commoners their king would be executing somebody who had simply given bad advice and he would be doing so without a trial or anything of that nature. Aragorn knew this and that's why he stopped Théoden, by doing so he preserved the people's trust in Théoden.

Aragorn was taught by the Elves of Rivendell how to track, and is even better than Legolas at it.
So if you remember the Orc, Elf, Men battle at the beginning of the Fellowship, the swamp with all the preserved bodies is that same battlefield.
That was the thing about Gollum - all he wanted was the Ring, so he wasn't really a traitor to the cause, just completely self-absorbed.
Edoras, the King's hall of Rohan was built as a set, they actually found a valley in New Zealand that was exactly described in the book. The flag flying off was completely spontaneous and not planned.
As part of the extended edition they told how they made the movies. It's almost as good as the movies themselves.
By most estimates Gandalf would have been at least 20,000 years old.

Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves)
    Gandalf The Grey/White
Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful.
However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife; sadness; and longing.
Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”
Galadriel herself not only witnessed this but as a student of Aulë and the other Valar she obviously had involvement in helping create the hallowed objects that housed the final flower of the silver tree Telperion that was the father of the moon and the mother of the sun was Laurëlin the golden tree and prior to the sun and moon they too used to wax and wane!

Saruman has been in Orthanc tower in Isengard ( a natural enclosed valley at the bottom of the Misty Mountains ) for nearly 2000 years. When Sauron was amassing power again after his loss of the ring, the Valar, or Powers of the World, sent representatives of Sauron's own kind of being. They didn't want more villains with that kind of power in Middle Earth, so much of their memories and powers were diminished and they took the form of old men. There's really nothing Grima can tell Saruman about Rohan that he doesn't already know. The Horse Lords were given the land between the Misty Mountains and the White Mountains by Gondor for the same reasons the North Kingdom gave the Shire to the Hobbits. It also had been depopulated by war and disease. But the Rohirrim have only been there 500 years.
Aragorn has foresight. Not the detailed kind like Elrond, but if he gets a strong hunch he knows to follow it. Not only is he against unnecessary killing, he knows Grima has something to do, the way Gandalf tells Frodo that Gollum still has a part to play.
Tolkien also wanted to show that the high and mighty magical people are important for victory, but the loyalty and valor of normal folk are just as important. You've already seen it. Hama the Doorward of Edoras wasn't stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing when he let Gandalf keep his staff. Tolkien understood that there's a whole world of difference between loyalty and blind loyalty. Good hearted men will act in the right way to save the situation. Hama was betting on Gandalf and his company to help Theoden.

25:23 Eowyn is currently King Theoden's heir: Theodred is dead, and Eomer banished. If Theoden died two minutes after this scene (obviously he didn't), Eowyn would probably be declared queen. Marrying her, whether she agreed or not, would give him the throne or place him adjacent to it, depending on whether Rohan allowed ruling queens to do the ruling.

Aragorn spared Grima for pragmatic, political & moral reasons. Morally: Killing someone is bad. Even when perceived as justified Tolkien didn't feel that taking a life was ever the honourable thing to do.
Pragmatically: Grima might have knowledge about Saruman's plans.
Maybe even some of Sauron's plans.
Information that they could have extracted from him if he'd accepted the king's 'mercy'.
Politically: You've not seen your king in months. Rumour has it he's gone mad and that Grima is the one running the kingdom now. Next time you see your king he's flinging Grima down the stairs unarmed, about to swing a sword through his head. Grima was even begging for mercy. That's not a good look for Theoden's first act as the King again after being silent for so long.

At 32:45 you say, "The names are so cool...but sometimes hard to remember." LOTR wasn't written like an ordinary novel. Tolkien wasn't a professional novelist; he was a philologist, a student of languages and word origins. He was probably the greatest expert on Anglo-Saxon or Old English of his generation. For Tolkien the names came first, then the character: what would a man named Aragorn look like? LOTR purports to be a translation into Modern English of the Red Book of Westmarch, which Bilbo and Frodo originally wrote in the Westron, or Common Tongue of the West of Middle-earth. However the Rohirrim spoke their own language, which was distantly related to the Westron but was no longer mutually intelligible. This Tolkien represented by Old English. In Anglo-Saxon the word for "horse" is "eoh," so many of the Rohirrim have names that begin with Eo- such as Eomer and Eowyn. Peter Jackson & Co. were wise to simplify the script by using only one language, but you'll see bits and pieces of Anglo-Saxon, such as Eowyn's song at Theodred's funeral, or the words Aragorn speaks to the wild horse. Lots of names to remember--you're doing fine so far.

A bit of trivia on *"Gandalf and Shadowfax":*
When Gandalf escaped from Orthanc on top of Gwaihir (the [lord of all] eagle[s]), he was dropped off in Rohan and asked Theoden for help. He wasnt really welcome at that time, but Theoden told him to "just take a horse" ... and so he did: Shadowfax.
This ticked off the Rohirrim/Theoden quite a bit, because he was their most precious horse and they didnt think Gandalf could tame him. After Shadowfax had brought Gandalf to Rivendell, he returned on his own to Rohan.
There is another "returned on his own" story, because "Bill" - the pony they had for supplies in "Fellowship" ... from Bree to Rivendell and then to Moria - returned to Rivendell and the Hobbits took him back to the Shire on their return trip.

His role was to head the others and lead the peoples in their resistance of evil. The grey wizard was to be one who encouraged others, e kindled hope, and did not use power to force anyone. (Btw they are spirits sent from the undying lands, kind of like angels). Even when they arrived the elf who met them first could tell Gandalf was the greatest, even though he took the role of humility over ending the leader. Saruman always resented Gandalf for this. When Gandalf dies the valar (pantheon of this world) send him back. He was completely faithful to his task, and saruman abandoned his task to lead the fight. Gandalf replaces him as the white wizard. This is why he said "I am saruman."
But he still shows a major theme of Tolkien's work. Power and strength do not overcome evil. Even as the white wizard, Gandalf is still encouraging and gathering others with hope. He is not raising an army for himself as a leader, but still an advisor, friend, and support. He is "leading" without force or power, and so can be more effective than saruman.

Gollum was not being dramatic when he said that the rope was burning and freezing him. Anything made by the elves are harmful to wicked and foul creatures. Which is also why Gollum couldn't eat the elvish bread known as Lembas.

The Black Riders’ shriek is not only perceived within one’s ears, but also inside one’s mind. It is a horrible wrenching of the brain - almost paralyzing. Their shrieking and their very presence is odious to all of nature, for they are unlife. Think back to early in the first movie (“Fellowship”) when the hobbits first encounter a Black Rider while hiding under a tree. Spiders, centipedes, earthworms, everything in the natural world tries to scurry away from its very presence, so terrible it is. Even touching one can be deadly. They are altogether evil and antithetical to all living things, as is Sauron himself.

You missed some good additional backstory by not watching the extended version. To give you an example - the short version doesnt explain how this "normal" orcs came to be with the Uruk Hai, and it doesnt explain how Theodred was wounded. Thats just two of the bits missing from the short version so far. Youre also going to miss out on important back story bits on the relationship between Boromir, Faramir and their father.

Same for The Fellowship Of The Ring. Extended only for the third movie. Other information is Gandalf wields Glamdring. Elvish sword which is extremely powerful. So his sword actually more valuable than his staff.
