The thing that I’ve found about layering (this is mainly for what she was talking about with Ohuhu) is that letting one layer dry and *then* adding the next layer, and then waiting for that to dry, and so forth. Doing this will usually improve the tone. It’s a bit of a hassle though, and one of the reasons I don’t use Ohuhus🤷‍♀️

The layering test would've been if you let them dry a bit in between layers. When you layer them so fast like that, it ends up being closer to a wet-on-wet technique in watercolors where they're blending with themselves. To get more tones they need to dry first so it's an actual new layer.

Just thought I’d drop some extra info about the Ohuhu markers:
    1. the brush tip markers are currently only available in 72 colors
    2. The brush tip markers cost closer to $1 per marker (the 72 set is $69.99, the 48 set is $39.99)
EDIT: Ohuhu is set to release a 24-color Skin Tone set in the coming days; No word on price yet, but I imagine it'll be in the $20-$25 range. Five of the colors are duplicates from the 72 set, but the rest are new, making a total of 91 colors + the colorless blender.
    3. They now have a colorless blender marker (at least in the brush tip markers; I don’t know about the non-brush tip ones)
EDIT: I have been informed that the non-brush tip markers do also have a colorless blender!
    4. The non-brush tip markers now come in 160 or 200 color sets
    EDIT:
    5. I forgot to mention before that Ohuhu's brush nibs can also be taken out and flipped over to give you a fresh one when the original starts to wear out, which adds a bit of longevity to the markers.
And a couple of general alcohol marker things, as someone that uses them a lot (EDIT: For context, I have experience with Copic, Prismacolor, Winsor & Newton, Chameleon, Ohuhu, Spectrum Noir, Artist's Loft, Azure, and the Crayola Blending Markers):
    1. You can usually see the varying tones in one marker better if you let each layer dry for about 30 seconds to a minute before applying another.
    2. All markers typically blend better when you have more transition shades between the colors you want to blend; this is why the greens and blues tended to blend better in your tests (alternatively, with most brands you can touch two marker tips together to get a natural gradient from one color to the other without transition shades)
    3. Ink smudging is very hit or miss. Some brands smudge a lot even with dry ink that’s made to work with alcohol markers (like the Copic Multiliners or Microns) and some don’t appear to smudge at all ever. And sometimes they smudge or don’t smudge just because they feel like it. Depends on the markers, depends on the ink. Sometimes depends on the paper, too.
    4. Generally speaking alcohol markers with brush nibs are meant to be used with a lighter touch as to prevent damage to the nib, hence why most of them are very soft and flexible; it’s easier to get variation in lines without applying much pressure.
    5. Pretty much all alcohol markers bleed through the paper at some point if you layer them enough. Typically though thicker paper takes more layers before the bleeding becomes a problem. (Like transferring onto the next page)

I have been looking at Ohuhu brush markers for Christmas so thanks for this comment, it was very useful. I want to start cheaper and see if I like alcohol markers, and a lot of people recommend them. You seem knowledgeable and I have some questions, it's okay if you can't answer any or all of them but here they are in case someone can.
      1) What suggestion do you have for lineart for these markers? I have some Microns that dried out and I was wondering if it'd be worth it to get more if I use Ohuhu markers.
      2) Is there a certain way that you do your lineart that prevents smudging? Because it looks like all/most of these markers smudge with lineart.
      3) What paper do you think works best with Ohuhu markers? I have heard mixed media is good, but I don't have enough experience to know if that is true.
      4) Do the sets generally have a large variety of colors? I'm just concerned because I have heard that they're randomly selected and I don't want to get stuck with only mid-tones. (I could be wrong or maybe they have a certain system to ensure this doesn't happen, but I remember hearing this before).
Sorry if some of these questions are stupid, but I have looked things up and I can't really find these exact questions and the only "experience" I have with these markers is watching videos. Anyway, if you want to answer and have answers then that'd be really helpful, but of course, you don't have to reply if you'd rather not :3

@@iridescentgaming4827 I’m glad you found my original comment useful! Let me see if I can answer your questions :)
(This might be kind of long :P)
      1. So far, I’ve found that Microns or the Copic Multiliners can be used with alcohol markers (including Ohuhu) with minimal or no smudging by following two rules; Firstly, I usually do my line work at least a few hours if not a day or so in advance, that way the ink has plenty of time to fully dry and settle into the paper, and secondly if you’re careful around the ink lines when you get near them. For example, if you color in the pupil of an eye to be black with the pen, you’re far less likely to get a smudge if you color around the ink instead of just coloring right over it. Alternatively, if your lines are usually pretty thick, you can try just starting with very thin lines and thickening them after you’re done coloring (thicker lines are more likely to smear), or you can do your lines lightly in pencil, color, and then ink the lines. Other than that, in the words of Baylee Jae, “they don’t smudge until they do,” and there isn’t much getting around that, short of using something like colored pencils for your lines instead. (Which I have done and that can be an interesting look to try!)
      2. See above :)
      3. For all my alcohol markers, yeah, I generally like Mixed Media paper best. The three main ones I’ve used are the Canson XL mixed media paper (98 lb.), Denik mixed media sketchbook (120 lb.), and the Strathmore 400 series mixed media paper (184 lb. and really good if you plan on using a lot of layers). The only thing about mixed media paper is that the colors aren’t as vibrant as they could be, but it’s never been enough of a difference to bother me personally. I also like using mixed media paper as it has enough texture that if I want to I can add extra shading/details with colored pencils if the markers just don’t cut it, but not everyone may need or want that option. Baylee Jae, who I mentioned earlier, has a really good video about paper types for markers over on her channel that goes into far more detail! (She also has a video using the 48 set of Ohuhus if that interests you!)
      4. I wouldn’t say the colors are completely random. For the most part, I think the two Ohuhu sets have a good variety, though the 48 set doesn’t have a ton of super pastel colors (they added some for the 72 set) and both the 48 and 72 sets don’t have a ton of options for lighter skin tones or dark skin tones that are on the cooler side. (They’ve got a few nice warmer browns though.) However, as Ohuhu has up to 200 colors in their non-brush tip markers, I’d say it’s likely they’ll continue making more brush tip colors in the future, so that problem might solve itself if given enough time. In the meantime, you could get the Ohuhus to start and build up a choice of skin tones from another brand if those are colors you really want/need.
I don’t think these questions are stupid at all; a lot of this is stuff I was asking a couple of years ago when I was first getting into alcohol markers, so I completely understand where you’re coming from. And for the record, I’d be happy to answer any other questions you might have, too. Hope this helps!

Due to green being in the middle of the spectrum of blue and yellow, you should experience a more reliable blending of the colors. Including one “secondary color” with the three “main” colors, was
missing the orange and violet. Ya know? Color theory type stuff.

With Ohuhu's, you can turn the nib around to get a brand "new" nib that way. Is now available in 216 colors.
Colorless blender comes with every set.
To layer Ohuhu's WAIT for the ink to dry some before you go in with the next layer. This is typically a good technique to use with most markers if you want a more contrasted shade difference. For softer, almost seamless shade build up, don't wait until the ink has dried some. Work when it is still wet.
Lighter tones tend to be able to build up in more shades than darker tones (their pastel set is pretty darn good in this regard). It can vary quite a bit from color to color, so it isn't a given just because the tone is light.
Ohuhu do send you a new pen if you run out of a specific color. They probably won't be sending you new pens indefinitely though.
Blending with them, well, that varies a lot but using the nib to nib technique tends to be required to get decent transitions.

I’m a landscape designer and I’ve used predominantly Prisma color markers because they out last the others by far before drying up. It’s a night and day difference they really run away with it. Copic has the absolute best color choices but what good are they when they dry up after just 2-3 designs and you have to either buy the refill ink or a new marker and they cost the most. I’ve had Prisma color markers that last a year after extremely heavy use and I can still use them when I want a lighter version of the ink. Just thought I’d share that hope it helps others who depend on a good marker for their work.

Personally I think that Ohuhu are the best (IN MY OPINION) cuz they’re really cheap and seem to always be improving!
Also the brand Ohuhu has a 102 pound sketchbook specifically for the markers and it doesn’t bleed through to the next page
Also if you don’t want any of theese and just want a really cheap alternative sharpie work very well and that’s how I started so ya you can find them at the dollar store for a dollar and they have a 45 set at Walmart with 25 original markers and 20 thinner markers so yea :3
I’m really not trying to nitpick the video I was just updating it for people who are looking currently and needed a little update so yea :3
Bye have a good day you Bootaful peoplez :3

I strongly agree and believe Ohuhu markers are the best considering the price. If people pay more, they get good quality markers such as comic markers, but Ohuhu stands incredibly strong bc of the good quality it has and the price. Tbh I love all markers and thank you for the updates 👌

I went to a class one time put on by Spectrum Noir and they taught us that you have to have special paper to get the true blending technique the way alcohol markers are intended to be used. It's kind of a slick, glossy photo paper. They did emphasize that alcohol markers are not intended for regular paper. You would probably get a better result if you used the right kind of paper. Also wish you had tried Chameleon markers which I think are sold by Dick Blick art stores in the US.

Hi i am an avid Arrtx user and (apart from the bleed, lack of brush nib and lack of buyable single pens) I have nothing to complain about them. They have brilliant colours, blend very well and there incredibly accessible prices are a deal sealer. They have lasted me at least 50 large A4 artworks before any began running out at all. In conclusion I would definitely buy these again.

Yikes I was waiting for the Artist loft. A part of my family got me Artist loft markers for Christmas.
I drew something I was really proud of. I hadn't learned of Artist loft's evil yet. The blending as you can see in the video is HORRIBLE. if you're coloring a large ish area with one color (or for my example the character was primarily one color) avoid Artist loft at all costs. You see the strokes so clearly it's painfull. It ruined it!!! I was drawing the characters from my friend's cartoon!!! I wanted to gift it to them as a friend and promo art because im proud of 'em but the devil's brand Artist Loft killed it.

these markers are AMAZING they layer nicely if you let them dry and blend nicely if you use circular motions.
they do not match their caps very well but they do included loads of pastels.

the nib is as good as copic

    • @lisaraper8053
      @lisaraper8053 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes most blending is taught in circular motion. To be fair she said she didn’t know how to blend alcohol markers. I believe she was guessing. Which to be honest she shouldn’t even be testing alcohol markers because she clearly doesn’t know how to use them. So this entire video is pretty much wasted. I can gather some information from watching it as anyone else who actually does use alcohol markers regularly could but this is most definitely not a video that precisely tells anyone who the best maker of alcohol markers actually is. Sorry but sometimes the truth hurts.

I like Copic solely because of their numbering system. I'm colorblind with really low color differentiation ability, so its really helpful to have the letters that let me know what color family each marker is in. Do any other brands do this? It would be really helpful if they did because copics are too expensive.
