      Originally, Activision made good games, like Pitfall, but the problem was with the console's lack of quality. This is what Nintendo had such draconian policies early on until it began to work against them down the line.

      One part of this reveal that is ironic is that a studio that was formed out of former employees of a first party company in the US would one day be bought and owned by a first party company in the US.

    I had ET in its "heyday". I honestly didn't think it was THAT bad of a game. I had fun playing it. I remember going around and picking up the Reese's pieces and collecting the parts for the phone. I think I recall ONCE being able to beat the game. To call it the demise of video games of that time frame is exactly as that man said "stupid".

    Good summary of the topic. E.T. wasn't, and isn't the worst game though, maybe just the most disappointing. It didn't bother me at all though. At the time, I just took it out and played something else. It probably soured a lot of parents on paying 40 bucks for a game, not knowing if it was good or not.

    • @YesterworldEntertainment
      @YesterworldEntertainment  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When playing the game for myself and capturing the footage, while I definitely saw the problems and frustrations many would have with the game (and could see the impact of it being so rushed), I kept thinking, "This is what considered the WORST game ever made?"
      It's unfortunately just become this symbol of the gaming industry collapse, and is wrongfully associated as what caused it, which has since snowballed into being worse than it is. And while now people practically expect movie-game adaptations to be a disappointment, I think people had unrealistic expectations, since they didn't have the (unfortunate) benefit of seeing years, and years of bad movie games.

    • @girliboi
      @girliboi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      exactly.. the movie was SO loved and SUCH a smash hit..that the game was just perceived as THAT much more disappointing by comparison.. but let's be honest, it wasn't good, so it's probably as good a symbol of failure as any..

      Well I’d say commodore or SEGA would have taken the Market if Nintendo didn’t step in. SEGA was dabbling in consoles over in Japan themselves and Europe was largely unaffected by th games crash with many consumers just going to commodore home computers. So one of the two would have kickstarted the American market again.

    • @claudiobizama5603
      @claudiobizama5603 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah. The videogame crash didn't affected european and japanese markets and companies. I think if the NES wouldn't came to America or Europe, the market would be mostly dominated by computers and some consoles.

      If you ask me, any DLC that features extra story should be either extra modes or extra storylines that you don't need to play to get the full story. A good example of this is Persona 3 FES' The Answer, as well as this underaided Xbox 360 game I've played that has 3 extra storylines.

    Next time anyone blames E.T. in front of me for the crash of Atari, I will send them here. I am not as much of a gamer as some people here probably are, but I do LOVE E.T. and I hate that these "legends" give him a bad rap.

    • @JosephDavies
      @JosephDavies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same here. I had the game when it was new, and it wasn't that bad. It was buggy, sure (and those were fixable, too: www.neocomputer.org/projects/et/ ), but compared to the kinds of games available on the Atari 2600, it was actually pretty good. I suspect most of the people who "know" this fact about E.T. being the "Worst Game" have never played it, or else only played it with an eye to modern gaming. Look at the context of the other games on offer at the time, and it's a miracle that the main character was recognizable as E.T., the game had a decent rendition of the movie's theme, and it actually had a story-driven gameplay with a beginning, middle, and end. This was rare enough to be pretty unique on the platform, in my experience. I've played much worse on the Nintendo, yet those games are often lauded despite the bugs and "challenging" bad design.

      @@JosephDavies I got it for Christmas in 1982. It wasn't until decades later that I heard it was reputed to be the "worst game ever" -- and I wholeheartedly agree. I beat plenty of Atari games but finally gave up trying to make it to the end of E.T. (and I'm sure I burst into Donald Duck hysterics every time I played it!).

    No, I don't think another game crash is imminent at all.
    Without making a whole essay of the thing it boils down to:
    1. The industry is a far different place now then it was in the 80's. It's already a massive and expansive industry already taking in billions of dollars each year. And that the industry itself is diverse enough that we have sub-industries for each platform: console, PC, and mobile (potentially VR, but it's still kind of early). Much so that what happens to one tends to not affect the other sub-industries. So expecting that crash to crash the same way as the first one? Try to imagine a big crash happening to the movie industry...aka not likely.
    2. People are still putting money towards the bad business practices. Stuff like overpriced season passes, DLC that (might) have been cut from the game and resold later, microtransactions...people are still buying into them. The reason why the game crash went the way it did was because the consumer base was way smaller, and that everyone did decide to not buy anything to negatively affect the companies. Here, that simply isn't happening where enough people are saying "no" to the current bad practices. For every guy that says "no" to a +$50 season pass, there's 10 other customers willing to put down the money to buy them.
    So no. A game crash as bad as the one of '82-'83 isn't happening anytime soon.

    I see “Swordquest” there at 5:29! I would love for you to do a video on that game, the contest, the prizes, and what happened to them! After all, the ‘83 game crash usually gets the blame for the fact that last game was never released, and thus the tournament was sadly never completed.

    Games used to be super expensive in the 1980's so when they crashed the costs tumbled - so people could pick up a Vectrex for Under £30.00 instead of something like £160.00
    Or Colecovisions for like £60.00 instead of £199.99 so yeah the crash was great for people who jumped on board when it happened loads of cheap games to keep them occupied - then they could maybe get a home computer for a little while and then take up the new consoles when they started to appear in the later 80's and early 90's
    I bet a lot of people started an interest in games BECAUSE of the crash.

    The worst? Well, three come to mind as competing for title of “worst”. One of them was Spore Creatures, which was ridiculously hard and unexpectedly violent, and another was this one My Little Pony game where you’re throwing a party for Pinkie Pie...and it’s too easy, it’s super boring, and there are not anywheres near enough options. The third would have to be America’s Test Kitchen, which can barely even be considered a game, in my opinion.

    Paying the company just to play games on internet you already pay for it idiotic. I was one of the few that saw through the scam early and I have not bought a game or console since.
    I wish this would change especially with how bad the production is on the current generation of consoles it’s just sad how dumb humanity is that this type of extortion of profit over quality is constantly repeated.
    That said I did buy 1 digital game and immediately regretted it through steam. I wish our world was better educated but sadly it is only getting worse

      And its not as if Nintendo is doing badly or something. That all their new hardware sells out very quickly shows an obvious demand for their products, even if its only one corner of an incredibly large modern industry. Nintendo has always had their role to play in the industry and likely always will, even if they are no longer the near-monopoly they were 30 years ago.

      Well, Nintendo had the best selling consle in 2017, so well just have to see. Gamers dont care about the history of the industry. Thisd is the same community that insists that graphics are more important than gameplay, mind you.

    I just find it funny that Atari basically commuted piracy against Nintendo by breaking into their lockout chip, then sued them claiming they were making too much money

    While I appreciate the work you've done on making a balanced video (not just going over the same things) but you only mention it once that this only happened in North America. It's was a very different situation in Europe and Japan.

      A valid point. I had contemplated having a section about how the industry was/wasn't effected in other parts of the world, as well as its impact on the arcade game industry. I always hope those who watch will be inspired to look into a subject themselves to discover aspects that I may not go into for pacing reasons and to keep the narrative focused.
      But in the future I'll keep this in mind, as I could see how those completely unfamiliar with the story might assume otherwise, and a short line or additional prefaces of "north america" would clear up any confusion.

    Another crash, what are the odds of that? Highly unlikely due to high profit margins and sales and the population of gamers. Even if that did happen, it wouldn’t last for more than 2 years and we’d quickly recover from that mistake like nothing happened. I really wish that scare mongers would just be behind bars already.

    Atari sued Nintendo for monopolizing the market even though they did the exact same before Nintendo came... ok.
    The worst game I've played technically was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on the PS1. The Sorcerer's Stone was the bomb but Chamber of Secrets was too glitchy to actually play. I really want to give it to LA Noir, but it was a really good game, just had a ridiculous "plot twist". Still bitter about that...

And we are at the tail end of this generation of consoles with PS5 coming in 10 months, XBOX Series X? And nothing from Nintendo... ugh.

    It's almost inevitable that this will happen again for video games bc the market is way too over crowed with cell phones, consoles and downloading ability which will eventually eliminate people buying anything from the store. You can see just from the short clip u showed all the glitches that they cause bc they are rushed to the market before they can be finely tuned.I stopped playing with them on a regular basis right before the PS2 days. I sparingly played the PS2 with GTA3 but that was only bc it was a quick faze in college

But I can name two that I have that have glitches so bad that they can't be played anymore... Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and Fable III. the worst video game that i've played, in terms of quality i think is a tie between Kitten Corner for the DS and The Lion King for game boy. the lion king's problems lie in how difficult it is to actually progress through the game without cheating. graphically it can be pretty hard to see too, but i'll give it a pass, given the time it came out. Kitten Corner has little to no gameplay and despite the adorable (customizable) kittens, there was just nothing to do. (save for some minigame puzzles)
