I retired from driving after 35 years of OTR . Truck stops have been going downhill for years and a lot of it is due to the fact that everybody wants everything now and they are in a big hurry. They need to bring back the sit down restaurants and kick the fast food out of the truck stops.

All these McTruckstops decided somewhere along the way, that they were gonna be "travel plazas" and lost sight of the truckers who made them. Then DOT came along and, just as you say, made it nearly impossible to make time to sit down for a proper meal, like any civilized human being ought to be able to do, and got us eating out of paper bags, snarfing down whatever slobber crap they're selling, fast as they can slap it together. Pretty soon, the restaurants closed and you find yourself standing behind a family of 8 trying to order their slobber crap, while you worry if you'll have enough time to woof yours down and hit the super slab and make it to your appt before running out of time... I miss the old truckstops where you could sit in a diner (always open 24 hours) and have some waitress pouring your coffee and calling you “Honey” and “Sugar!” Truckers talked to each other too! Nowadays you are all alone except you have your “device” in hand!
I hear you driver. Back in the day most truck stops had 24 hrs sit down restaurants. Sometimes it is hard to get any food if you drive late. It is inconvenient for the truck stops to have food for drivers anymore. Trucking is 24seven us drivers have to operate at all hours of the day. You would think the truck stops would. I miss the mom and pop truck stops ,they definitely had the best food.
Ray, we pine for the 'old days' because in many ways, it was better back then. People just cared about each other more, and things moved a skosh slower. Instant gratification and instant satisfaction have infected our society.
I remember the good old days. When truck stops had full service and trucks came first. They would fuel your truck wash windows check your tires and oil. If you wanted they would even park your truck if you wanted to go in and eat at a real restaurant or take a shower. Fuel was 27.9 with a 6 cent discount that the driver could keep and we didn't show on company ticket. Most times that would pay for their meal. If a truck and a car pulled in at the same time the car would have to wait. We respected the drivers and they us. God I am old.

@@genehart8088 many drivers are rude and surly because of the bs that we have to deal with on a day to day basis, not to mention the fact that a lot of us stay out on the road for weeks and months at a time, not because we want to, but because we have to in most cases. Then to make matters worse, shutdown at a truckstop at the end of a long day, and can’t get a bite to eat because the frickin restaurant is closed at 5pm due to “staff shortage”, or the showers are out of service because “plumbing issues” which seem to be happening more frequent lately. That’s only just a little of the crap the we experience. That should explain the rudeness. Yes! Truck drivers are the back bone of this country. If they walk off the job, none of us eat!!! Many thanks to all of you for the hard work you do & sacrifices you make to get the goods we need to us quickly. God bless all of you! ❤️🙏🏻
After driving for three years on the road. I realized I had to get a good freezer/refrigerator, microwave, air fryer and crock pot. Saved hundreds of dollars every month.
Sheetz and Thornton aren’t bad either. Newer and cleaner at the ones I go to. Nobody seems to be mentioning that clean restrooms can make a big difference in a truckers day.
Fuck pilot, they don't have enough parking for those of us who run late in to the night. If you parked by 1600 you are sol with pilot unless you wanna buy a reserved spot
The TA motto... Give us all of your money and shut up because we don't car how you feel. They treat us like cash cattle. And don't get me started on having to get a tire repair in one of their shops where you will sit for 3+ hours every time. Or this damn pay to park BS. That is one thing I like about love's, no paid parking.
I've worked from 2004 to 2011 and it was great! I'm back out 2021 of November and the Truck Stops are some of the worse I have ever witnessed! Some are ran down, the Pilots and TA's are not giving points for every purchase, TA,s don't have full Johnny no more in many states, I still haven't been able to get a TA card on site, they're socalled kiosk locks me out of getting a frequent customer card, it's a total grab for every dime of the truck driver in these truck stops. So truck stops are no longer I help the truck drivers but they are predators to truck drivers!
Yeah I also started driving in 2004 to 2019 taking a little break now fixing to get back out there in the next month or so and a bunch of truck stops have went way down hill

Great show at 3 am in the morning. Greetings from Indianapolis Indiana. I stumbled upon your posting. I just retired from the painting and drywall trade after 56 years. I am in my basement on TH-cam. Thank you for posting.
I have never been a truck driver, but I like your vlogs. I do however remember my dad stopping at truck stops when we traveled because they had the cleanest bathrooms, didn’t try to rob you on snacks and stuff, and occasionally we would sit down for a decent meal. Not anymore. Like you said, they are in it for the money, and usually the truckers are lined up to pay for fuel, and sit around waiting for a shower. Sad really because you guys move the goods and services. Could not get along without you! I always respect you guys.
Ironical isn't it, "Due to distribution issues we are temporarily short of some items." Perhaps because so many truck drivers are leaving the industry because standards of service at places like this are so cr*ppy 🤔
There’s no shortage of truckers, companies don’t want to pay a decent wage, so no one applies for openings and the companies say there’s a shortage, a lot of companies want you give to them 2 hours or more free time when waiting at a shipper or receiver, but they charge the broker but you never see it and they wonder why they can’t get drivers nowadays you can make just as much flipping burgers at a Mickey D’s
@@robertesposito9871 You aren’t accurate about what you speak. Driver wages in my part of trucking have almost doubled in the past 6 months. My company has many drivers making 6 figures. there is a trucker shortage, why? owner operators pay 3 time as much for their trucks, three times more for fuel, many truck stops could care less about your needs. to combat the shortage the government is going to let teenagers drive interstate. I made the same income in 1970 as you guys are today. years ago drivers fought for deregulation and they got it, the business went down hill from there. Steve with your old cab over Pete stand a better of making it, no monthly payment, your down time for repairs is low as you do most of the work. good luck and hope for a profitable year, pull toy here
I agree with everything going up 3times but teenagers are not allowed to drive semi trucks on the interstate. And I make lots of money as a company driver been doing it for 20 yrs. It's just the cost of living has gone up 45 percent. Now the driver and truck shortage.... No there isn't one

Man, am I ever glad I'm not on the road anymore. TA was already beginning their downward spiral in the late 80s when I ventured out onto the road. They quickly became a better than nothing choice of last resort. Stay safe out there.
Got stuck at this TA about 20 years ago due to a ice storm. Wasn't to bad back then compared to some of them. Though did spend most of my time in the bunk, TV, Fridge, Microwave.
During our "Road Trip" from Augusta, GA to Las Vegas, NV and back (wedding and then scenic trip back), we stopped at a few T/A stops, and pretty much found them all to be like this one. We converted over to Love's, and had a great stop, every time. Drove 2510 miles that trip, and am now sold on Love's.
Great video as always brother. I always try to stop at mom and pop truckstops, typically better quality and serve. Safe travels brother, I always look for Orwell when I'm run the road🍻
:) If the TA is so bad and your experience with Popeye's there is bad, why do you continue to patronize it? If people stopped using the TA at that particular site, things would change.
I don't! Once and a while I go into one to see if the prices and or service has gotten better and it has not so I walk back out without spending anything. I would rather just park there and walk a half a mile to a non truck stop restaurant and not get ripped off.
Yeah things would change. The truck stop would close. That is all the trucking industry needs if fewer places for drivers to park. It is bad out there .we need more truck stops.

That’s where I started my truck driving career. I started with Mayflower out of Carmel Indiana. They kept us in a motel in Lebanon Indiana, just north of Whitestown. I’m from Florida and that TA is one of the first truck stops I ever went to. Bought my first atlas there. This was 1992. Matter of fact I bought a 1989 Peterbilt 362 just like the one you’re driving from Mayflower.
Great video as always Steve. I look forward to watching. You’ve got to fix that door molding behind your left ear, the wind noise must drive you nuts LOL
First time seeing your channel. I usually stop at that Pilot or Loves in my expedite van. Don't think I've been to the Thorntons there in Memphis Indiana. Love that classic cab over....not many left anymore. My brother had one back in the 80's and I drove that a couple times. I guess that's why I have a liking to the cab overs. Keep it safe out there!!
Wife and I saw a lot of this as we were on the road Sept through Dec of 2021 for vacation and trips to visit family. Bought a plug in cooler for our trips and we bring our own food now on our trips. Alot of inside areas were closed on the highway stops. We traveled Pa to Florida and back, Pa to Virginia and back, Pa to Illinois and back, and Pa to Maryland and back, throughout Pa. We have it easy as only driving a SUV.
All the shortages are starting to take effect now Steve even here in Aussie. Might suggest to buy Powerade powder and water and mix it in the truck bud
Retired 2 years ago and TA Petro use to be the best of the chains. I think Love's passed them around 2015. Even though they only have fast food. And you're right TA chooses to be this way. I wished to avoid fast food but it was getting hard to do so and TA & Petro started closing there Country Pride restaurants and replacing it with Popeye's and Subway's that cut the product and doubled the price. Might as well go to a Pilot where they've done it for years.
Yup Oshkosh guy here, met you a couple days ago in little chute Wisconsin at truck stop. My kids thought I was so cool I got to meet a you tuber. Thanks for talking with me and stay safe trucker.
Steve you should watch some of trucking with Schmidt he's out of western Iowa the only time he stops at a truck stop is to get fuel, when he stops to eat he pulls into a shopping center where there's regular restaurants other than that he'll get a snack and a drink at fuel stop. Truck stops have become the worst place for a driver to get a good meal
Nope, nope, nope. Get a fridge, and a microwave for your truck. Truck stops are for fueling, showers, and maybe if you ever need something for ER reasons. But, not for food. Many truck stops are horrible. You can catch something just by looking at it. Stay safe.
To each his own brother I've never had any issues at that TA the coolers being half empty is a pain in the ass but right now that's damn near any gas station you go to..good video by the way
just happened to see this video. I'm always interested in viewing customer service experience. I worked for Wegmans for 29 years. I gotta tell you, no one allowed us employees to treat customers badly. action was always taken immediately if anyone did. Wegmans spoils their customers so much, I dont know how else to explain it. they WORSHIP the customers. I worked in a store that had pretty demanding customers too! I have a job in another field now but I want to say thank uou for your service and thanks to all the truckers out there for all you do. (I just passed my cdl permit for school bus now too. I'm excited) I know I couldn't do what you all do. God bless you

Great video Steve really enjoy all the camera angles and the music. Love your commentary also it was nice of a fan of yours to greet you at the truckstop stay safe.
Yep same here I haveca dollar store a half mile from where I park the truck stock the fridge get snacks ill do popeyes now and then but mostly eat in the truck
You hope that some of these same places that have bad service will eventually change but sometimes that is just a continuous cycle that stays bad. You said it, they chose too be that way. Its easy for them. They still make money because its a necessity and they don't try and make things better for the customer. I would pack stuff to eat that doesn't need refrigerating for situations like this rather than eat that sh!t.
As I get older, I turn 50 this year, my concept in life is to be nice to everyone, and respectful to everyone. Someone out there could be having a bad day, and just being polite to that person could make their day just a little better. Especially when you are in the service industry. Just be nice, even if the person you are dealing with isn't.
I'm so glad I'm retired. I had to retire due to severe arthritis pain. Everything was still perty decent when I retired. If you had taken it back an demanded another box they probably would have spit on it or wiped their ass with it or ran an called the cops so you can't win. The world has gone crazy.
Ive only been driving for 6 months but i try to avoid TA, loves is where i usually try to park for the nite cause they have bigger and usually cleaner parking. Pilot flying j never have enough parking and are always a hassle getting out and gassing up.
I used to enjoy going to LOVES until I had a bad experience when I was coming back from Universal Studios in Florida. Had a flat tire, their compressor wasn't working and they sold me 2 cans of Fix-a-flat that did not work. I didn't even think that was possible. So rather than driving on a bad tire is pulled up at the edge of the island to swap the tire out since there was no shade on that 100 degree lot. I actually had spectators; wife was in the rig just chuckling.
The irony that pisses me off is you see and hear all these folks talk about us truckers eating healthy on the road but they only leave us with that fattening fast-food crap served to us by kids who bring their attitudes to work with them. With that being said, Steve, that B-model sounds beautiful!!!
I hear what you are saying about leaving us drivers with the fattaring food at these restaurant at TA or other places. And kind of pisses you off for as people's talking about us eating healthy. All that maybe true what you said. But at the end of the day YOU STILL HAVE A CHOICE to buy food in fast food restaurants or buy food to put in your truck , things you like as well To eat healthy. THAT'S A YOU RESPONSIBLE CHOICE YOU MAKE YOURSELF. No kids that work at those restaurant or the food that sells at those fast foods or TA Is their fauth for your own CHOICE how you eat. Staying healthy how you eat is strictly YOUR OWN CHOICE. I wish people would just stop blaming other people or places and take responsibility of YOURSELF.
Because nothing will make his day better than having to deal with police. Isn't there a zero tolerance with alcohol in the cab and zero tolerance for while driving?
Yep. Thorntons At mm 16 i live at mm 29 we stop in there quite often. When it first opened was cheapest fuel around but it caught up with the other's. Sometimes still cheeper than its neighbors.
Yea this is so true. I'm a young trucker. Only 7yrs. And man it's hard to find good solid meals now a days. So much fast food and junk and I can't stand driving with the feeling of that stuff in my system.. I try ro gran fruits or protein snacks. But it's nothing like a decent meal... some of the TAs still have that sense of sit down take a break relax have breakfast or dinner... mainly Petros I would say. But I think having a refrigerator and having some meals prepared or cold duty to make sandwiches is better.
I sat in the cab of a truck every day for 20 years. Good thing to stock is mixed nuts cashews, peanuts, and anything for energy. I lost 40 pounds when i got out of it.

When I was driving I avoided most TA's like the plague as most of them were not on our designated fuel stop list. Since then they have become a monopoly after buying up Rip Griffin's, Travel Ports and others that I don't know about. So glad I got off the road just before that happened. Of the few times I ate in their restaurants the service was awful and I walked out several times. I still gave her a $5 tip and told her to please find a better place to work.

Used to be so happy to stop at TA, and Country Pride restaurant. Now this is the worst of all truck stops. Don't even get fuel at TA any longer.
T/A was good until they bought the 76 truck stops. They went downhill after that.
@@tlspiker5341 🤣 they used to be good now a days if you can find one that's open you only have a very small selection of food to chose from....salad bar days are gone😪 they claim they can't get anyone to work for them...or it's to go only.
Isn't that the world now? All alone device in hand ....
Ray, you're making me sad, you really are.
Ray, we pine for the 'old days' because in many ways, it was better back then. People just cared about each other more, and things moved a skosh slower.
Instant gratification and instant satisfaction have infected our society.
U mean the run down dirty mold in the showers what were u on
I remember the good old days.
Same memories for me, plus the crazy promotions such as free glassware. And don't forget the S&H Green Stamps and Gold Bond stamps.
Wish I had drove back then.
@@TreeLBollingTreeMan I had so many green stamps at one time went into a store and bought 1 of everything and still had stamps left.
@@TreeLBollingTreeMan 198O/ 83 we used to get S&H green stamps, when we rented at Hertz car rental, Boxes & books of those things. Driving the truck was easy. It's all the crap you have to deal with out there that's tiring & stressful.
Now there is an old school driver, who knows how to do it! I had 47 years before retirement! 47, accident free and a hell of a lot of miles! 1966-2013!
Steve, you offer an honest, clear-cut illustration of the truckin' industry. I appreciate that!

Our truck driving guys and gals may not be perfect but they should and must be treated far better than the way they are.
Many drivers are rude and surly and yet they can!t figure out why they are treated the way they are!
Some of us know who the real Heroes are... and that they don't wear capes. Just sayin....
I, try my best to be patient, and understanding when I come across these issues, but my patience is wearing very thin.
Yes! Truck drivers are the back bone of this country. If they walk off the job, none of us eat!!! Many thanks to all of you for the hard work you do & sacrifices you make to get the goods we need to us quickly. God bless all of you! ❤️🙏🏻
Agree 💯
After driving for three years on the road. I realized I had to get a good freezer/refrigerator, microwave, air fryer and crock pot. Saved hundreds of dollars every month.
Exactly. Why paid $14 for a hamburger and french fries when you can make a meal for a fraction of that?
I stay away from TA now for the most part, I go to Pilot or Loves. They are cleaner and the staff is friendlier.
Agreed
Sheetz and Thornton aren’t bad either. Newer and cleaner at the ones I go to. Nobody seems to be mentioning that clean restrooms can make a big difference in a truckers day.
U r Definitely Right Driver
I started putting shop points on friend's card that would fuel there.IDGAF about the convoluted driver payback of the Petro/TA

There’s no shortage of truckers, companies don’t want to pay a decent wage, so no one applies for openings and the companies say there’s a shortage, a lot of companies want you give to them 2 hours or more free time when waiting at a shipper or receiver, but they charge the broker but you never see it and they wonder why they can’t get drivers nowadays you can make just as much flipping burgers at a Mickey D’s

there is a trucker shortage, why? owner operators pay 3 time as much for their trucks, three times more for fuel, many truck stops could care less about your needs. to combat the shortage the government is going to let teenagers drive interstate. I made the same income in 1970 as you guys are today. years ago drivers fought for deregulation and they got it, the business went down hill from there. Steve with your old cab over Pete stand a better of making it, no monthly payment, your down time for repairs is low as you do most of the work. good luck and hope for a profitable year, pull toy here
You lying now
I agree with everything going up 3times but teenagers are not allowed to drive semi trucks on the interstate. And I make lots of money as a company driver been doing it for 20 yrs. It's just the cost of living has gone up 45 percent. Now the driver and truck shortage.... No there isn't one
@@nahnah6765 you need to start paying attention. The teenagers are about to be out here with us. Actually there are some teenagers already out trucking. As of right now they can do intrastate only but that’s about to change.
@Michael's Production's that’s one of the main issues with trucking. 75% of the drivers don’t really have a clue what’s going on in the industry.
And there is no trucker shortage. Tried to find a place to park after 3pm lately?
Man, am I ever glad I'm not on the road anymore.
TA was already beginning their downward spiral in the late 80s when I ventured out onto the road. They quickly became a better than nothing choice of last resort.
Stay safe out there.
Got stuck at this TA about 20 years ago due to a ice storm. Wasn't to bad back then compared to some of them. Though did spend most of my time in the bunk, TV, Fridge, Microwave.
I remember truck stops from the 1950s as I hitch hiked across the country. No freeways. Nothing resembling now. Many truckers picked me up. Thank you.
I love your camera set up, all the different angles.
Ahhh a 3406B Caterpillar and a 13 speed is like music to my ears that is one sweet cab over Pete too

:) If the TA is so bad and your experience with Popeye's there is bad, why do you continue to patronize it? If people stopped using the TA at that particular site, things would change.
You don’t always have to many choices 70 feet of machine is hard to just park anywhere!
Sometimes fuel card will choose the truckstop...whether you like it or not.

Right because i stated to drive back in 2015 and loves change for the better that year with a new owner

I watch Schmidts videos. He's good

That’s why I stock up before I head out. The prices at those places are stupid expensive anyway.
Yep same here I haveca dollar store a half mile from where I park the truck stock the fridge get snacks ill do popeyes now and then but mostly eat in the truck
I'm impressed with your camera angles & yeah some truck stops are just down right sad 😔

I always stop at that Thorton's north of Louisville, stocked and cleaner than more mega stops nowadays.
If I were you, I would have a couple of drinks to forget about what happened to you at the TA truck stop.
Because nothing will make his day better than having to deal with police. Isn't there a zero tolerance with alcohol in the cab and zero tolerance for while driving?
Holy crap! I was at that same TA back in the early 90’s.
Best wishes and Blessings to your parents. Hope their transition is smooth.keep the great shots coming.yeah TA and cops suck.
Yep. Thorntons At mm 16 i live at mm 29 we stop in there quite often. When it first opened was cheapest fuel around but it caught up with the other's. Sometimes still cheeper than its neighbors.
Every TA that I have stopped at was a dump.

One waitress apologized when she brought my meal and told me she had a horrible boss and there were only one other waitress on duty. One of the worst in my short career so far has to be the Pilot PA 80 in Milton PA, Dirty and Rundown, smells like piss we I get out of the truck. Get into the station and gives the vibes of a 80s mall that's been out of business for 5years. The bathrooms are some of worst I've seen shit, smeered everywhere. The restaurant is always under renovation, better be damn good when it opens again, if it ever goes. The staff is nice just always hiring.
I do recommend to check it out for the experience then never go back.
Stay safe and keep it rolling my bro.
