Sometimes pouring the pans in 2 halves and letting the first layer dry out before pouring the second layer stops cracking in the paint. Some don’t crack but some paints get a giant fissure down the middle where the water goes in. In a humid climate this can be a place for mould to grow
Those last 2 mins were the most therapeutic ones!! 😍 I just got my new watercolour tube set, and I was wondering how make it last longer and cleaner, this was definitely an eye opener!! 😍😍😍😍
This was the best example I found so far. Very great advice about creating the small color chart that goes right in the tin. I watched another one which placed small magnets at the bottom of the little pallet boxes to help them stay in place. I think that’s a very good idea that I will add to my process. I am still figuring out what colors I need. I am be using the Daniel Smith dot chart of all of his colors to create color chart to determine what colors I want to choose. I have the tin that you use in this example. I know it’s gonna take a lot of time but I am really excited about doing it. Thank you for the advice.
I put a tiny touch of blue tack on the bottom of the pans to keep them in place. With the type of palette shown in the video, the little metal parts at the top and bottom can be folded slightly inwards to secure the pans too.
The 24-half pan palette can actually house 26 half pans for a snug fit (not counting the space in the middle because I use it to store my brushes). Great video!! ❤❤❤
Ahhh, been waiting for this vid!!😍Love you jess, you are amazing Video ideas (that I desperately want you to do): 1. How to sketch with proportions. 2. more sketching with ballpoint pens and more tips. 3. How to fill your sketchbook. 4. Painting videos, paint with gouache. 5. Basics of drawing. 6. Art challenge: Redraw your old pieces!! 😍🥰😁😄
Thank you so much Jess for doing this video! I have recently ordered my watercolour supplies and was wondering how to get it organised 😇 I’m going to follow this step-by-step 🤗
One thing I would recommend that she didn’t mention in this video is that if you use one of these kinds of palettes (the ones that have metal tabs to hold the pans), I highly recommend slightly pushing in the tabs before clicking the pans into place. It will hold them in place much, much better and will help prevent pans from falling out if you accidentally knock your palette. Good luck with your watercolor journey! It is such a fun medium to use :)
Thank you for the pallet prep tips. I have a purchased pallette that I can take the shine out of to stop the beading. Didn't know to do that. Thanks. Also thanks for the brand suggestions for quality paints and papers.
You might want to substitute Graphite Grey for Ivory Black. It mixes with your other colors and makes for a really interesting granulating color. It’s also great to use for tonal studies, along with soft pencils.
oh gosh, so I'm going to hold a lecture about watercolors beginning of 2023 (it was supposed to have happened early this week, it's december 2022) and this made me realize I would have forgotten entirely about transparency and opaqueness, smooth colors and granulating ones etc, like the whole basics! I was so unsure about which watercolor things are generally interesting and which are only interesting to me that I completely forgot newbies to watercolor might want to know about all that stuff..
thank you so much Jess! I can't stay away from your channel, you've given more so many tips and inspiration! ❤️ can you do more 'sketch with me' videos?
Oh... the separate piece for the names that you can fold over is the best idea. I could never write small enough & couldn't read it if I did. Love the reference .
Pro Tip: Skip every 2 colors to allow the square to dry before filling the box next door.. no chance of spreading and bleeding and ruining your card....
I hate videos that skip a colour! I love this video. It's relatively easy to leave a wafer thin line between each swatch as here. I would find it helpful to know the manufacturer pigment opacity and granulation/staining in voice-over as each colour is watched.
@@debbrantstevens8826Lol.. to each their own.. I rather see a color skipped and gone back to rather than colors merging into each other and ruining the swatch.
I started to follow you not long ago, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy all your videos, with great info to the point, your lovely works (I feel soooo jelous :D ).... you are an amazing dedicated artist and a true inspiration for me, thanks a lot
Hi Jess it been a month since I subscribe to u. U are the artist that I like to watch when I'm doing art project for school. U inspired me to draw more and practice on watercolor and many other art materials.
Another way to prevent your pans from moving is to tape magnetic tape at the bottom of your half pans. This makes sure they don't jiggle around and it prevents them from popping out (though it does make it harder to push them under the metal tabs, but those are less necessary with the magnets); would definitely recommend this for any palettes you'd throw around in your bag. Your palette is beautiful!
@@artofjesskarp Hi, I'm not sure if you're aware, but the watercolour metal palettes are actually designed, so that the half pans don't move at all. You just have to bend the tiny metal thingies (those along the metal track), not much just a bit, and then you pop the half pan (the side without the bent metal first) and then you push it down a bit - till you hear a click. And it's secured. :) if you want to take it out you just unbend the metal thingie. I'm sure there is a tutorial somewhere on youtube. So there is actually no need for either magnetic tape or the sponge :)
@@artofjesskarp Oh, and you can also put one additional half pan in each of the two "original rows" - if you don't want to bend the metal tabs - it will also help with them moving around :)
Thank you soo much. I am recently planning on shifting to water color. This will help me a lot Thanks again you're a great artist I wish I could draw like you
This was amazing as it always is! Watercolor is definitely not my strong point but it was so very satisfying to watch you fill up all those pans! Love you, Jess! 🥰
Hi Jess. This demo is very helpful, as I just bought new colours and a new palette. Could you please tell me ho you reactivate your watercolour. Do you spray them when you are about to start painting or simply wet your brush and get your paint as you go along. Thank you for answering and have a pleasant day!
So you can use the tubes; they re activate with water? I didn’t know this, I always just looked at the half pans you can buy. Might have to give this a go 😁
I love ur videos so much!!! U inspire me a lot!!!! Thanks for being so amzingg!! I love seeing ur progress n ur art vlogs n I'm looking forward for more videos!! Luv ya:)
Is there a "normal" amount of time for a paint to "dry". I am expecting it to be "hard" but the van Gogh Chinese white does not seem to dry.... it has a film and is still quite "squishy". I read that a new palate would be best to cure for a week or even 2. There does not seem to be honey in this brand, but I want to ensure I am doing everything right. I have the pans in a dark, warm area with a fan to keep air moving. Any thoughts??? (no wonder the pre made pans are available. Patience is not my strength.
I love how you have the tiny inset image / video of the swatching of these colors. Lovely touch but I have no idea how you did that. I heard that regular Manganese Blue has been discontinued because they can't get the pigment anymore.
This was so so informative and organized video... U inspire me a lot. I'm just thinking to buy a pallate and now I can see ur and can organize. Love from India 😍😘😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕💕💕
That’s the best palette setup video! I’m assuming that you recommend the Daniel Smith brand rather than Winsor & Newton brand. It must be that they have so many more colors. Do you have a palette for gouache colors? I’ll be anxious to see your travel palette when you make your decisions. You have so much talent!
Thank you so much!! I like using Daniel smith and Winsor Newton as well. I just also noticed that the Daniel Smiths rewet a bit better. And I’ve tried them and honestly both are great:) I do like using gouache from the tube but I do have colors I prefer in gouache as well. I’m still deciding on a limited travel palette but for now will take this one and see which colors I’ won’t be able to let go of :) thanks!
