His explanation is that he had to do that to defuse a serious war like situation . Now going back in time a little ,when there was an actual war going on, on the Kargil front and things were rapidly escalating and situation spiralling out control . Pakistan was suffering heavy casualties , Political leadership thought it prudent to intervene and American help was sought to give it a face saving . He strangely enough says that a Military victory was converted into a Political defeat . Nobody is ready to buy this logic . His act of overthrowing an elected govt was unconstitutional and illegal . Pakistan has badly suffered the consequences since then .
