Love the generous application of paint! We recently did a short video on how the introduction of metal ferrules on brushes made it possible to manufacture flat brushes, which the French Impressionists used to create their accentuated unblended strokes, and watching this, it's hard to imagine what painting en plein air would have been like with just round quill brushes!
Love your work. Periodically when I’m drawing or painting other features show up but when working and being focused they get missed. About halfway through this video I noticed one of the rocks along the top, just right of centre had become a perfect horse head. Fortunately as you went further in the painting it changed enough but I had the fear that it might remain and in my eyes, maybe others, it would remain to be discovered over time, or remain as a hidden secret for a few. Really enjoying your videos, interpretation, and instructions. Cheers Bob

Though I am an outdoor watercolor painter I learn so much from your out loud thinking through the painting process. Learning about big shapes & composition, use of values and transparency are so helpful to me. I thank you for providing your painting videos for painters like me, and the always beautiful venues are inspiring for me to get out there and paint.😊
Michael, I really love that painting. I’ve also enjoyed watching your evolution and progress as an artist. Your work years ago, when I started watching you, was amazing enough. But you keep reaching new heights. In 100 years, art students will be learning and talking about “21st Century California painter Michael Chamberlain.” 😉😊👍 John from South Florida
Nice job, Michael! That was thicker than you normally do but it came out so good. The beauty of oils is you can scrape it off and start over. Sometimes it's the best thing for a painting! Leaves behind cool colors to work with.
Interesting look to this, with the dark halo on the rocks and dark shadows. Combined with the softness of the sky and the knife work in the foreground, makes for a cool effect! Great experiment Michael 😃
I really like the thicker paint and the energy in the whitewater. I wonder if you used more of a yellow gold color on the tops of the rocks instead of the warm white? I'm always impressed at your ability to pick out and mix colors. Thank you for sharing your videos with us!
@@chamberlainpaintings Michael welcome , “defying gravity “ having heard you mention impressionists era , center rock seems to have some, painting before , the extended wave at shore, the gang member from st. thomas, used gravity defying elements in a field painting , Michael noticed that affect on an elongated beach wave , and here , implied to the center rock, white seems a part of all three , also interesting and harder to paint, palette knife shape , size , dremel the edge, or not quite an experiment 😎
try using the knife in an up or down motion, much of what I see is on the horizontal. Also the edge of the knife can leave sharp linear marks which are sometimes useful.Lastly clean the knife to enable application of only one color.

Another great video Michael. I have found painting with a palette knife painting to be challenging. I probably need more experience with it. What about starting with the palette knife and finishing with the brush?
Thanks Andrew. I'm not crazy about the look of palette knife strokes even when done by people who know what they're doing. I'll probably use the palette knife to apply thicker passages and then run a brush through it.

Turned out great! I like the blocky look of the rocks.

I actually saw that video. Very interesting!
@@chamberlainpaintings Thank you!
Lots of great stuff going on here. I like the direction you are exploring.
I think you're on to something with the thicker applications of paint. Looking forward to seeing how this approach-with knife and/or brush-progresses.
The little squirrel climbing on the rocks is adorable!
There were several of them!
Watching your videos make me want get out and paint ,thank you
Really enjoyed what you said as much as the actual painting - liked that too!
The resulting work is evidence of progress

I try to keep an eye out for objects in the shapes. 😂 Glad you're enjoying my videos!

Looks like you’re having more fun than usual with this one. Where is this? Pacifica?
It was mostly fun. There were roughly ten minutes that were not fun 😂 Yes, Rockaway in Pacifica.
Very nice.
Great video, and fab painting. May I ask, do you sand down your old boards when you resuse them? Thanks for taking the time to make these videos ☺️
I just give them a light sanding
hello to you & your little squirrel friend! :)
