    Thank you so much for your videos. I just got a 914 today. It’s been in the family for many years. I had not seen it in several years but bought it anyway. So happy to see that it has very little body rust. Especially for a Michigan/Ohio car. The undercarriage is not so pretty, but okay. Thanks again for the videos.

    Well done. After 18 914's I did have one that was rust free though. 1974 car with only 27,000 miles on it, stored indoors for the last 25 years. still had cosmoline on underside and wheel wells. but, after reviewing hundreds of cars, it really was one in a hundred. Now I am happy to find ones with only hell hole or battery tray rust.

    Thankfully, the body panels are cheap to get, and welding (lol) I am going to Carbon Fiber everything I can get away with. lol One I got is a 76 with a v6 stuck in the rear, floor is really bad so have been working on making a carbon fiber tub for it.

    I bought two 914s, Rusty and Rustier, for $1,200. Rustier is the doner car and I got it because it contained $1,300 worth of non rusting parts I wanted. I’ve spent way more on underside rust than I bought a brand new ‘73 914 1.7 in Aug. 1973. But since then I’ve been to welding school and expect to be able to repair much of the rest without the $95/hr welding fees. With the help of your vids I’m taking off the front suspension to repaint the underside. My biggest problem is space. All the “stuff” I’ve taken out of the car to work on it reminds me of the circus clown car I saw as a kid where about 20 clowns climbed out from a car barely big enough for one person. My poor garage is overflowing with the contents.

    • @IanKarr

      Ha. Yep. A deconstructed car takes up way more space than a running one!

    Nice work as always Ian! Another reason I believe the rear trunks get so rusty is the seals that filed quickly and allowed water in. The ones that were used around the wires to the licence plate lights were a universal hole plug for Porsche and were used in a lot of ways. They were kind of like a doughnut with a thin membrane covering the hole in the middle. You would poke a hole through it depending on the size you needed. Obviously, in Germany, it was a little more precise than this but you get the idea. The end result was that tin membrane would shrivel over time and allow water in. the seals around the taillights were also a culprit with the rust issue.

    914 dont really rust any faster than most other 70s era cars. As some one who orig. came from upper midwest... X19, 1800,912, Lancia,Ghi, 411, 911,Ghibli, saab , bimmers, chyrslers, Amc,, they were all shot. If you drove them in winter and on salty roads and you didn't flush them out periodically, orig paint would start to bubble up in a few weeks. Relocating to the SW many years ago and just crawling around my Laguna blue 914 its as new and NOT rusted...Dry climate....no salt....Any unibody rusted out will fold like a cheap suit.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. Any ungalvanized car will rust. It just seems that the way these cars were engineered makes them more vulnerable, sooner than most ;)

Fix all the bad connections at the injector harness. set the timing in that little hole. then fuel starts to leak at the injector tighten clamps. OMG..... REALLY
