  • Robin Hoods Bay is a magical fishing village along the coast from Whitby North Yorkshire. The locals call it Bay or Bay town but legend has it Robin Hoods Bay is named after Robin Hood the famous outlaw who apparently thwarted a french attack on Robin Hoods Bay fishermen hence the name.
    A favourite site for smugglers from the continent, it was also a place of shady deals and contraband in the 17th century. With goods whisked away from the shore through the tiny streets and alleyways heading inland.
    Today, Robin Hoods Bay is a peaceful haven with many independent shops, cafes and pubs to enjoy as you lose yourself in the wonderful lanes of this picturesque place. Join us for a walk around with some interesting tales and history, in the last video of our Yorkshire travel series.

      Excellent views of Robin Hood Bay village. Note that the tide goes out quite a way here and as well as the sands there are a lot of flat rockbeds with some of the best fossils to be found in the UK. It is not far from me and has always been a favourite place to go.

    Visited on Boxing Day about 15 years ago. The weather was extremely grotty, low dark clouds, cold driving wind, "lumpy" rain and the sea very rough. The owner of a chippy at the bottom of the hill had paid two students home for Xmas to put the fryers on for a lunchtime service. We sheltered under the portico of the old lifeboat station eating bags of steaming chips, along with a good number of like minded couples. It was bloody marvellous.

Long may these posts continue. 🙂

    Sometimes there comes the odd day - and its usually a hard one - when one is pleased to get home, draw in the curtains to shut out the dark, light up the candles ( it`s December `22 here in Yorkshire, just as it is in any other part of the world ) and take a cathartic walk around Robin Hood`s Bay. Oh - and look foreward to Spring.

      @@MemorySeekers I was a fashion designer in the 80's. Arts and crafts in the 90's. Also in the nineties an interior designer and antique shop. In the 2000s a fripperie. Now I am back to my original passion of painting and drawing. Thanks for inquiring and keep up the amazing videos. I don't know if you have done Kirstall Abby and museum in Leeds. Who knows with covit measures what's happening there. The crocus time is the best. There are the remants of a Victorian/Edwardian incinerator. In the 2000s I found a lead figurine there: a pussycat. It's in the southwest corner of the lot, now brush. My body is in Canada but my heart belongs to England.

    Hi, I along with another guy installed pumps motors control gear and associated pipework under the floor of the coast guard museum you mention, back in 1964. It was bought by Leeds University as a marine laboratory. Our pumps drew sea water at high tide and pumped up to holding tanks in the roof space ,which then fed the various specimen tanks. We stayed 5 weeks at the top of the hill in the Grosvenor Hotel, just up from the laboratory a shop did fish and chips only on Wednesday lunchtimes. When we left in our mini van it couldn’t get up the hill on its own , I had to step out at walking pace and push - we made it. Thanks for prodding the memory banks. By the way I was 15.

    WOW!! Thank You guys. I think I would need to pinch myself so I know I'm NOT dreaming. You say it's only a 2hr walk from Whitby. I'm already planning in my head how I would do this in a day or make multiple walks. When I return, clearly this trip would concentrate my energies in Yorkshire. From a New Yorker's POV, London is nice, but it looks too much like home. I wonder what people in the Robinhood Bay do there for a living if they're not fishing or selling items for tourists. I would love to be a postal carrier just so I could walk around all day delivering mail and taking in the sights of the area on the daily. I don't care about the weather. OMG!!! how awesome would that be!??!

      You could catch a bus, or drive there, would only take about 15 - 20 mins. I expect most people who work travel into Whitby or other nearby towns, it is only an hour to Middlesbrough.

      I am lucky enough to live within a 1 hour drive of this beautiful village, last summer my family walked the 6 miles along the clifftops from the bay up to whitby the scenery is breathtaking .In whitby there was an american dance troupe performing and after chatting to the organisers they gave us vouchers for free fish and chips ( probably best fish and chips in britain ) ! After spending a couple of hours in whitby we took the bus back to robin hoods bay and all agreed we are going to do it again this summer. I am a postal carrier ( postman ) although sadly not in this village , if you are ever in england the east yorkshire coast is a wonderful place to visit !

    We've been here a few times, it's a magical little place. A pity that the tide was in because one of the best features is the smugglers tunnel which is beside the Bay Hotel, couldn't be seen. We stayed at The Bay Hotel in one of the sea view rooms,glorious views over the bay but if you are a light sleeper then these rooms may prove challenging. The tide came in through the night and the waves crashing against the walls kept us awake for a while but we just lay there laughing to ourselves! The video doesn't do the steep hill justice but again,that's part of the fun of this place. If you have never been here then go and visit it! plenty of cafes and a few pubs to keep you refreshed. The beach itself when the tide is out is expansive but can be rocky in places so plenty of rockpools to explore.

    • @MemorySeekers
      @MemorySeekers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it was a shame we could not see the tunnel but that water was rough and no chance of getting anywhere near it! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences in the bay, most interesting to read. Wonderful place.
