Omg I just started reading Rebecca based on this video and I cannot stop reading it. It’s so intriguing. The details and the way the scenes are painted are fantastic.
considering you’re one of the only youtubers whose opinions i trust, and since i needed new books to read, this vid was heaven sent! thank you kindly for making these videos because you’re truly a bright light on this platform!
I've never been able to get into "BookTube" - you're one of few people I enjoy listening to talk about books on this format! We have similar tastes and I appreciate how specific you are about what speaks to you in each book without seeming pretentious. I'm reading The Annotated Mrs. Dalloway now and have read a book by Vita Sackville-West, All Passion Spent. Not one of my favorites of that genre but you might enjoy it (or similar books published by Virago Press).
@@MauveASMR It’s such a beautiful edition and I feel like I’m getting a lot out of the extra commentary and context from Merve Emre. Would make a good present!
I am SO excited for this video! I was falling out of reading a few months ago and your literary fiction recommendations revived my love for it. I’ll be taking notes on which books to buy next 😝
My favorite book and possibly one of the best classics: Wuthering Heights. so deep in character and just such a passionate story. but also, if you’re into the real old school stuff, the hunchback of notre dame and Les Miserables are beautiful, both by Victor Hugo.
I remember being assigned Rebecca for my 7th grade English class. The same week I brought the book home I was also grounded… so I binge read the entire thing. Still one of my all time favorites as well 💕
Classic literature : “Don Quixote” is the greatest writing I’ve ever read! Other favorites: “Hyperion” for sci-fi lovers. I think it’s even better than “Dune”, another favorite!! Fitzgerald’s “Tender Is the Night”! Modern literature: anything by Paul Auster, especially “Moon Palace” or “Oracle Night”!! My favorite book ever might be “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. Sensational writing. My favorite recommendation from your book videos: “West” by Carys Davies”. Masterwork novella! “Weather” by Jenny offill was amazing too! Also you got me into sally Rooney’s work so thanks!! Amazing author. 😄🙏🏻
Really enjoy your book videos! Always super thoughtful, and most of what you read is *totally* different than what I normally go for. Making a note of a few of these books for the future! I read Mrs. Caliban two? three? months ago after picking it up because you mentioned it and OMG I'm still thinking about the last 20 pages of the book. Cheers 🍻
@@MauveASMR Oh definitely because!! I'm a big believer in having a broad cultural palette, and there's nothing quite like the high of discovering something word of mouth that I never would've seen otherwise and being like "omg this is INCREDIBLE".
I don't have any new "favorite books of all time" right now, but I usually do a compilation of my faves at the end of the year (check out my videos called Favorite Books of 2023, 2022, 2021 etc) -- I'll also have a fall haul for you next week! 😊
Omg me to! I just finished my last exams and the sole excitement for me is to be able to get back into reading again! I’ve had books piled up for months now 😭
Ohhh I didn’t realize Second Place was your favourite Cusk! It’s the only one I have by her but I was deterred by some mediocre reviews. I hate choosing favourites but if I have to I’ll pick The Sparrow (epic sci-fi but make it a theological study) and the peculiar life of a lonely postman (how loneliness forces companionship)
Oh interesting! Like I said, Second Place isn't a perfect book but I think about it all the time and I really really enjoyed reading it. I also love the Outline trilogy, although it's a totally different feel! If I make a second part the Outline trilogy will definitely be mentioned :) And finally, thanks for the recs!
I've read Giovannis Room this year and LOOOOVED it! One of my absolute favorite books is "On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan. It's a heavy read not because it's difficult to read but it portrays perfectly the complexity of a human being. Highly recommend this one. I read it a second time this year because it never let me go.. To me it's a brilliant book and I'm slightly shocked that this book is written by a man because I can relate to the female protagonist so immensely. But I guess Ian McEwan is just a terrific writer. 💙
My fave books are The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Alice in Wonderland (basic, I know). I’m far more of a cinephile than a bookworm, but I may have to check a few of these out! Thanks for the calming videos.
@@MauveASMR this is probably one of the most tame/wholesome interactions you will see between these two sides, my city is unhinged with sports haha (and in general tbh)
Hey Mauve. How are you today? I was hoping you'd choose Rebecca. I re-read it last year and it's one of my favorites ever. My edition seems a bit strange but I actually love the design of the cover. It has a beautiful illustration of Rebecca and the main character. The Second Place and The Idiot sound pretty good. I think I've already added both to my Goodreads TBR. Now I want to read Portrait Of A Marriage for the Non Fiction November challenge. I really love listening to you talk about books in general. Thank you for always interacting with us and having our requests in mind. You're the best. Hope you have a nice week.
Thanks Naty! You're always so supportive and I love getting comments from you! Also-- it sounds like you love Rebecca as much as I do! 💜 If you end up reading Portrait of a Marriage I would love to know what you think
@@MauveASMR Yeah, I do. It's an incredible book. I also loved My Cousin Rachel. It's not as good as Rebecca but it was a great read. Even though the main character is a little annoying.
