Hi, Juliane! Looks like you did a great job washing your quilt, but that's a long time before washing with all the dirt/sand on a tent floor that can get through the fabric, so I'm impressed there wasn't much dirty water.
Okay, I've been wondering when to launder my EE quilt. I've used it a total of 14 nights so I think I'm good for at least the next 20 or 30 years at that rate ;-)
Put it back in the compression bag first, then dunk in water. Once saturated then remove from compression bag. Reduces the amount of time trying to submerge it.
Good work! Your hands and shoulders must have been really tired and maybe even sore after all that. The water coming out was really clear so all it needed was fluffing with the tennis balls. It’s really good that you show people that you have to take care of stuff to make it last.
I also have an EE quilt. Won't go back to mummy style unless it means not dying. Have yet to last more than 20 minutes with the down balaclava I bought with it. Bakes my brain after awhile.
Love that you bought tennis balls to use as dryer balls 😂. I swear by my wool dryer balls! They floof up dog bed, blankets, quilts and down pillows, small loads dry faster, just overall a wonderful addition to my laundry gear. So happy your quilt survived its first ever bath!
@@umreeh Oh, no! Don't use a dry cleaner to clean a down quilt. There should be a statement on the product tag that tells you this. As Juliane did here, use a soap specific for "down wash," such as the Granger's that Juliane used or Nikwax Down Wash. Actual detergents strip the down of the natural oils that keep the feathers fluffing and somewhat water resistant, there are also added scents, color enhancers, and other additives that are not good for the quilt/bag fabrics or the down.
Good morning, Juliane. I've never done a quilt/sleeping bag, but we do have down blankets we use on our beds. Process is very similar. Looks like to me that you did a great job. The real test will come when you use it on your next hike. Hopefully, that will be soon. Can you tell I'm already looking forward to it? Great tutorial video for someone who is also taking their maiden voyage on cleaning their quilt as you were. I'm sure that your daily care of your quilt helped make the cleaning so successful. Take care, Juliane. Stay safe. See you next video.
Washing my down quilts for the first time was nerve racking! So I totally understand! But, it all turned out just fine. I did almost the same way as you did. But, I used regular detergent.
If need be, you can send it back to EE and get a small "shot" of new down added to rejuvenate the loft. I had that done when I bought mine to get a little extra loft and down shift protection.
I washed my quilts several years ago. It took a long time to dry them on air only (including the tennis balls). I would take them out every hour, and massage out any down clumps. They turned out nicely clean and ready for many more years of use.
YES 💯 when washing something that has down, much or little, ALWAYS use down detergent or no soap. Smart girl🙂 (I love down btw, have a down comforter in the hiking hostel, everyone loves it)
i will always take my down quilt to a laundromat and put it in the front loader machine...it will clean so much better and spin dry the water out of it so less dry time. I have had down for years and have never had an issue...oil build up from your body makes the fluff unfluff. After that many miles I am sure there was a lot of oil and sweat build up. Taking care of it the way you do will definitely make it last longer! I would have soaked it longer...though that could have just been an editing thing. You worked way too hard to clean your quilt. I get the fear but know you should clean it at least once a year...or after one of your gazillion mile hikes. 😊 Taking care of expensive equipment is a high priority for me too!❤
It's always nerve-wracking to wash down quilts and sleeping bags. So much easier if you know someone with a front loading washer, or can go to a laundromat. I had to handwash my quilt earlier this year, and it wasn't fun. I can sympathize!

I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for doing it! Put a smile on my face on a day I needed one.
I do the same with down pillows. By the way, I've been watching Jaru Hikes while he's on the CDT. Lordy, I see your aversion to wildlife.

Excellent work RR, nice tutorial!
Wow! That seemed like quite an arduous task, but glad to hear the quilt washing was a success! 👍
Yes, I was wondering if dry cleaners offer quilt cleaning services

Nice job! I'm always nervous to wash down gear. Thx for showing this.

Great content. Thanks for sharing.
The girl has balls ⚽️ 🎾😂😂. I have a synthetic quilt but like you protect it with a liner and “clean” sleeping clothes. Good job 😂. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
Good job. I can't wait to watch you when you do the CDT. I feel a triple crown coming on.
You are brave! I send mine out to someplace in CA, I think, to be professionally washed and dried.
I guess I was fortunate, because I washed my down quilt in a regular washing machine and hung it up to dry. It seems to be fine.

Great tutorial! Thank you so much.
Nice job. It looked like a new bag.
Looks like it came out like new. Enjoy for another 5000 miles :)

Hi I watched your video today . Blo down or pinto , pinhoti . Come back to the van
I remember my first down winter jacket in cool 80's colors and washing it with balls!

Nice work Road Runner ‼️
Is your quilt a 950 fill ? I am trying to decide whether to get the 850 fill or the 950 for my 2025 AT thru hike.

5000 miles without washing your quilt!!! I'm surprised you didn't have to catch it first to wash it.
Wow, I thought it'd be washed after the AT.
How about just use as little soap as possible so you don’t need a rinse
Always rinse of soap to prevent possible itching/chemical reactions?
Not rinsing takes the oils out of the down.
@judeoliver5256 yes, the Lanolin oil dies in contact with (normal) soap
5000 MILE QUILT - ARE YOU NOSE BLIND ? FYI - THIS IS TO MUCH INFORMATION
OMG - EXPERIENCE THE FRIGHT ( POST HALLOWEEN EPISODE ) 😅 🤣 😂 🙃
mmm floofy
Why not dry clean your Quilt?
Dry cleaning chemicals will damage the down.
lol 😂 ⚽️🏀⚾️🥎🎾🏐
