Fighting mobs is never optional, or else you're going to come back through the tunnel in a hurry and have ten million mobs waiting for you. Best to just get rid of them as soon as you can. A few players have learned that the hard way. (There are a few mobs you just run away from like the blazes or the ravagers, but for the most part, you don't want mobs wandering around, making things difficult for you on your way back when it might be the worst possible time to have to deal with mobs.)
the running back on low time thing is a fair argument, but that's separate from killing mobs. In a lot of cases you should be able to avoid killing mobs as long as your team communicates well enough and you're aware of how much time it takes for you to get back. H is already well versed in those skills, so he should be able to skip killing mobs a lot more and just focus on covering as much distance as possible!
