  • A video tour of Takashi Murakami's exhibition "In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow," the artist's first major solo show in New York since 2009. The show opened on November 10th and will run at Gagosian's 24th Street Gallery until January 17. The exhibition is a large scale presentation of the new themes and motifs which Murakami has developed in recent years, beginning with his 2012 retrospective "Murakami-Ego," held in Doha, Qatar. Conceptually, the works deal with Murakami's interest in the origins of religion, a subject which he began to explore in the aftermath of the 2011 Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, as well as the relationship between art and disaster, from the natural variety, to man made forms such as war.

Terrifying and fascinating as well. Like illustration for a Bible story of humanity after the Fall. And just the harmony, that you can still see through the ugliness, keep the Hope.

It is paint. All of it. He hires a crap-load of workers to paint his images.

they're vectors made in adobe illustrator made from scans of his hand-drawn sketches, then burned into many screens and screen printed by his workers

This man went from doing naked anime figures made out of fibreglass that were sexualized and degrading, to something much more meaningful. A reason why I appreciate this artist so much.

DarkSamuraiX1989 i wasnt a fan of the anime stuff either, but last i saw he was just talking about hentai. either it was addicting or he just thought it was unhealthy or something. if you know then tell me lol

Well his oversexualized fiberglass work was a statement about what was popular (and is still popular) at the time within the anime/manga world asking what people found attractive. When you make those figures and forms in a 3 dimensional, extremely well done manner, it makes you reconsider the medium as a whole. I say this as someone who is a prolific anime fan, as well as a prolific Murakami fan as well.

Sexualized yes but degrading? To us Asians they're naughty but certainly not deplorable or degrading. We like such things as much as we like what he's done in this video.

This is good except for the drama music, which has zero to do with the art.
