I’ve been doing the Jonah discernment method, which is where God tells pretty clearly what he wants you to do, and then you go “well, I’m not doing THAT” and you go do something else, suffer many painful misadventures, as God gradually forces you to do what he told you in the first place, and then you get mad at him when his plan works out better than yours, and then he patiently points out you should be really grateful he didn’t just kill everybody and be done with all our sinning race, and then you thank him.

I did something crazy last night. I went to a Woman's Funeral who I did not know to pray the Rosary for Her and Her family.
Never in my life would I had thought of something like this that I should do.

Maybe consider going through your closet and giving warm clothes to people who need them - search for "homeless (your city)" Matt 3:11 (and then check your pantry)

I had been asked to do the readings by the other readers but said there's no way I could stand in the pulpit and read, so I said Lord if you want me to read, have our parish priest ask me to read, knowing I was safe as our priest never asks anyone to read, two days later, Father comes out and says to me will you please read! Never mess with the Lord, he will call your bluff, I've been a reader now for 29 years

Dear Fr Columba, I thank you. You have laid out the steps so clearly and simply. I love St Ignatius’ rules of discernment but sometimes I tend to juggle them. I fall mostly when I am confronted with fears, apprehensions, doubts and confusions. I tend to go back to discerning it again and again until I get so tired and get discouraged at times. Well, I know this is where the enemy is attacking me since he knows this is where I’m weak. My way can be all over the place but yours is done systematically. I had instant peace while listening to this episode. Praise Jesus! Thank you! This has been massively helpful ❤

I have that warmth around my heart when I'm praying, saying the Rosary. But sometimes
(a lot) when I get distracted it shuts down immediately. I don't get upset, but I know that He is giving me that reminder, so I can begin again. No one that I know has had this experience; and Father, I even feel it as I type this comment. Thanks so much for helping me to understanding what is happening.

Never my strong point! If there was an award for idiotic decisions I would own it. Seriously, though, so many of us are led astray spiritually, and discernment is a key part of living as God intends us to. Great vid as always, Father.

I think it's a tie with me. I think at some point I got my PhD in bad decision making. I found out that even if I ruin everything, God has no problem building something beautiful on those ruins. I only have to accept it and thank Him for fixing my life again and again.

Thank you so much. Best video on discernment that I’ve watched since my conversion in 2015. And I’ve watched and read the lot. Through this video I realised why I have been yo-yoing on my vocational discernment - I had never reached that point of holy indifference like you described. I just followed your exercise this morning, with the words, “In Christ is Everything” and I finally have an answer I will stick to, with God’s grace. Please pray for me!

Can’t elaborate enough, this one Fr Columba was a slam dunk. Been hovering around the neighborhood of getting on the good-better plane and I see your video, kept saying to myself ‘it’s 10 minutes long’ no time…then after Mass tonight I had the Grace to see this is exactly for me in this moment….speechless, because these moments of pure joy in my good-better plane are the perfect foundation to know the rudiments of DISCERNMENT. Thank you Fr Columba…your friend St Ninian. :)

Thank you for this video. It really helped me understand discernment better, and also how to talk to God about it. It surprised me to realize I had actually been praying about discernment according to your video description. It was an amazing feeling just knowing God was really telling me what his plans for me are and although I should be terrified because they are major changes that would naturally cause anyone to be nervous, worried, and a bit scared, I am a little nervous because I'm not great about change, but I am actually a little excited and ready for this adventure although I haven't much ideas what I am going to be doing. I DO know, deep in my heart, it is what God has discerned me to do. Thank you also for allowing me to share. It feels amazing to really feel that God is leading me on this journey. God bless you for all you are doing to share the faith.

Hi father, Columba yes very helpful from the bottom of my heart. I’d like to thank you for such a clear explanation, I never been the brightest person in the room but the way he expressed yourself makes it so easy for a guy like me to understand even though I must admit I’m a sinner and I’m a coward because I can practice what you just told us, but sometimes I choose not to because I want to do my will anyways like I said before I’m working my way towards Jesus little by little thank you father God bless and God bless you brothers and sisters

The movements of the heart… I remember this movie with an old time actor Leslie Nielsen carrying his future bride into his home saying “ lord if I shouldn’t do this just give me a sign” immediately followed by audible “no” “no” and the masonry of the house splitting down the middle… followed by him walking in and saying “thank you”😂. How many times do we disregard our heart’s movements in favour of social pressure or other movements… Thank you brother for reminding us on how we should tune into this subtle channel prone to interference, static and downright piracy.

No kidding. I say my prayers but I guess I just have always had an issue of 30 minutes a day or better. I’ve tended to find God or at least belief through the intellect and not the heart. So this is a hard one for me.
I’ve done my best to teach my daughter to find God through her heart because she is so young. I never had that blessing. I think it’s the easier path and seems like this is the way for discernment. Just my overall thoughts here.

    • @kategosnell8210

More than prayer, invite Christ, The Blessed Trinity into each moment of your life. When you're enjoying a meal, share it with Jesus. When you're watching a movie, share it with Jesus. Me, I like listening to music and sometimes I 'post' the Love song to Jesus with My Heart and Soul + You can make work a prayer, pain a prayer, anything a prayer - as long as you unite it to Jesus. Keep it Simple and Authentic 🌹

Father, what if we made a decision before we knew about consolation and desolation? What if now we realize (after the fact) that we were feeling some consolation, but we were sabotaged with intrusive thoughts (probably ol' red legs!) and made a decision that we realize was maybe not God's will (though nothing sinful)? Should WE try to take action to reverse the decision? or is it best to leave it in God's hands and wait for His consolation to move us to act again? Can we make the right decision and still feel desolation after having made the decision (at least initially)? Thank you for all your content, and for all you do! You are always in my prayers! 🙏🏼

    1) Ask Jesus to make it really simple for you to know what he wants .
    2) Get some Holy indifference to the thing you are asking about
(Its up to you Lord- whatever you want).
He prays for one thing he wants discernment on each day.
Give thanksgiving about other times he gave you discernment.
The devil wants to discourage you in asking and waiting.
Ask for holy indifference as to the answer you get..
Theres more, but thats as far as i got ...
Have to listen again to get the rest ...

What? No 40 days fasting? No mountain to climb? Just patient prayer and listening for that still small voice letting me know, yep this is where, who, how, when and why...and meh, this isn't.
Ah yes, that warm feeling of peace, comfort and joy!
    Happy Birthday Jesus❤

'Discerning' God's presence, or not. "Holy indifference, Batman! Ol' Red legs is trying to keep me down!"
That's how you know, you got through, Father! I made a comic book reference!

Ah dear. Every time I pray and give thanks, something really bad happens either to me or the person I pray for. That has been during most of my life.
I have had to turn to mental discussion that seems really empty.

These practices are very helpful for receiving such graces. Thanks for sharing your wisdom vis-a-vis TH-cam.
There is a way of asking for confirmation 3 times, especially when discerning decisions of great concern or consequence, it has been suggested. However, it seems possible that trusting is critically important even then.
