And the BEST part of the area model of multiplication is that it generalizes PERFECTLY into multiplying polynomials.

For a while I thought you had to know how to write all of this backwards. So it would show correctly on our side of the clear material you’re writing on. But now I just realize the easy answer. You actually are writing normally, not backwards. On camera, it appears backwards, but then you flip everything in the edit. So the only thing backwards, is you!

You got it! (This is the number one question I am asked about my videos!)

@@JamesTantonMath oh, well I’m sorry to ask a question that everyone asks all the time. I browsed the comments first, didn’t see the question myself. I’m sure you would much rather have comments about the video content, not how the video was made. So thank you so much for being kind enough to reply anyway!

Oh I am sorry. My reply was about how charming it is for me to get this question so very often! It is so intriguing and puzzling to see it in the video and it takes some lateral thinking to realize what I must be doing. Not many people figure it out like you did! Well done! @@MagnumDB

@@JamesTantonMath Okay, great! It's almost... geometry!

Yeah, that's nice. But schools are often stupid. They want you to calculate something like 23546 x 762 with pen and paper. And keeping track of all these rectangles get's more time consuming when the numbers get a little bigger. And if a kid does not have enough practice with the long multiplication, because it imagined rectangles all the time, it is just lost in a test (where time matters a lot)

as a wanna-b tutor, this is just a puzzle; good presentation with graphic but no reference to factoring and processing-he's darn near showing numbers bases (like octal) which you don't see until computer class...my first impression is this was meant for non-math people and this would not change their mind-I don't get the focus on right-to-left figuring- just say it's from antiquity-possibly Arabic-where language is also the other way round.

Muy bien James, creo que debieras conocer la estrategia ABN del español Jaime Martines Montero. Yo combino ambas estrategias, la tuya y la de él, y el resultado es muy interesante. Salud

Long multiplication is basically solving a bookkeeping problem.
