One of my favorite songs in a movie is "The Times They Are A Changin" by Bob Dylan in the opening credits of Watchmen. Fantastic use of music as they introduce the entire backstory of the Minutemen and show their beloved rise and then their fall from grace as times changed and the members were murdered, declared insane or retired. One of the best opening credit sequences in any movie. The rest of the movie is decent but those opening credits are gold Jerry!
Huh. How strange. Never thought something I said would have made it into the preamble. the energy was great this time around guys. Love the podcast as always.
Raanan is a funny comic and a chill dude. Even if sometimes his movie opinions differ, people need to realize everyone has different views in opinions and in this type of podcast, it's very much needed for contrast. Thanks for the content fellas. Joe is great as usual as well
Quentin Tarantino is also a master with the soundtracks. I mean.. “Stuck in the middle with you” is fantastic in Reservoir dogs. I know, it’s part of the actual scene itself but either way, Tarantino has to be on top of that list. Triumphant moment in Gladiator when he takes his helmet off, pretty good. And the end sequence in Last of the Mohicans when they kill the bad guy .. oh man with that soundtrack, it gives me goosebumps.
One of my favorite uses of music in a film is the film Drive! The whole soundtrack, even from the opening credits. It’s one of those movies where the music enhances every emotional aspect of the movie and gives emotional depth to a lead character that doesn’t really have any (Driver). The ending scene with that song playing (A Real Hero) makes me cry every time, even though life has left me pretty much dead inside. Ryan Gosling has been my absolute favorite actor for over 10 years. Each role he does is so different, I’d love to hear you guys talk about his best films.
Love the pod and TGIF too! Your dynamic is amazing. Who would've thought that an awkward neurotic Jew and a fat guy from Kentucky would work so well? But it's great! Good luck on the taping.
Hey i dont know where else to write this other than your most recent video, did you see Louis' latest SORRY? did he 'borrow' your bit about Good Will Hunting? you guys have the exact same riff as he does and i know he was on your show. lmk thanks
Joe you gotta read Chaos if you’re into true crime about the Manson murders. It completely dismantles the Helter Skelter narrative. Tarantino used it as research for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood the book.
Duel later got a theatrical release in a longer version after it played on TV. Also it's a movie. With a director. His name was Spielberg. So it counts.
Its hysterical that this weeks new episode of Curb has Larry absolutely shitting on the movie Little Women and two days later they release this pod and Ranaan says “I really loved Little Women” and Joe just respond with “ooof”
Another great episode, thanks boys. Dream topic- a Crash episode where you cover Haggis and Cronenberg's films of the same name (no relation). I feel the unequivocal revulsion both will bring you will make for great podding.
Punch Drunk Love remains my all time favorite film. Some others have come close. But lord that film is just glorious, wild and engaging on so many levels.
Not as ambitious as other PTA works, bit it perfectly accomplishes what it sets out to. The use of color in the costume and set design is immaculate. There are even blue and red semi trucks seen driving around in the background during one of Barry and Lena's scenes
Would love a Tarkovsky ep by them but i don't think they know him and i doubt they'd like his work even tho he's one of the greats. The way Raanan talked about Bergman before was infuriating 😂
I like this format of you guys just casually talking movies, some recent, some older. Btw, do not move to L.A. based on the way it's depicted in Once Upon a Time or La La Land. I know you're joking, but seriously. Lol.
I didn't think True Grit was gritty enough. I watched Dead Man with Johnny Depp for the first time a week later and thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend watching the latter for a comparable alternative that does a lot better what True Grit, in large part, tries to do.
"Long Good Friday" score was just awesome. From the credits rolling at the beginning with the theme I was: I don't know how this movie is gonna go, but I'm loving this music. Bonus points was that the movie was so good. Thanks to Colin Quinn for the rec :)
La La Land is so good, makes me happy to hear you both like it. You guys gotta show some love to Gosling. I think he’s one of the best actors out there. Joe if you read this I implore you to go watch Blue Valentine. I know that you liked Marriage Story, and Blue Valentine to me is just a better version of that movie (and came out first). If you want another underrated Gosling flick, Half Nelson he plays an inner city teacher with a drug addiction, you’d both like it. Love the pod. I’m gay.
Yes yes yes ! Ryan Gosling has been my favorite actor for over 10 years. Yes to Blue Valentine, and I also would like for them to throw in The Place Beyond the Pines
As far as triumphant moments what comes to mind for me is The Matrix when Neo is finally powerful enough to defeat Agent Smith. Smith was such an excellent villain because he was so overwhelming and dangerous, that when Neo beats him Smith himself is both shocked and infuriated
I'm glad Joe and I see eye to eye on Emma Stone. I agree, she is radiant in LALA Land. I think that film showcased her so well. I also think she was well utilized in the two Woody Allen pictures she did - "Magic in the Moonlight" & "Irrational Man". She's pretty hot in "Gangster Squad" too. It's not a great movie, but she is fun in it. She plays the girlfriend to the mobster played by Sean Penn and of course ends up falling for Ryan Gosling's character, a cop.
kevin smith is a great dialogue writer. loquacious, yes. but we all know guys who dont put commas in their speech. they need to show their heart with too many words. it doesnt mean it's not worth the wait. plus red state is an amazing horror movie unlike anything ive seen before. its quite the divergence from clerks.
I'm not the biggest kevin smith fan either but raanan's take is, true to form, ridiculously off the mark, to the point that if pressed, I'd bet he'd admit to never having seen any of his movies.
Most hated/loved movie, that has no lukewarm reviews is "Southland Tales" 2006 which i recommend to rewatch anyone who saw it when it came out, that movie is great, its not as fantastic as some people say it is, but it really nails some of the things that are happening now.
I agree with Raanan, I don't know what it is, but some of my friends are attracted to men (even men who are not that good looking) just because they're tall.
I feel so vindicated that you guys like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood! I think it's the best Tarantino movie. I've been wondering if you actually go into depth on it anywhere in this podcast, maybe it's time for me to get on the Patreon
Same!!!! I think it’s absolutely one of Tarantino’s best. I was so so happy to see Brad Pitt win an academy award also for his role. He was absolutely phenomenal in it. He played it so cool, so understated that you never were quite sure if you had him figured out. But in the end, he was just a loyal friend but still kept that mystique alive never really answering the question with his wife’s death. And of course, Leo. He’s a friggin master. I cannot tell you how many times I have watched that scene of him berating himself in his trailer, cracking up. “8 whiskey sours!! I had to have 8!”
@@Michele1ELL Exactly. Pitt’s character was supposed to be ambiguous; guarded by his hedonism and pessimism. His character is the perfect companion to Leo’s who’s nostalgic and neurotic to a fault.
I fucking love that movie. The first time I was underwhelmed and felt it dragged, by the third time I was absolutely in love with the movie. To me Leonardo deserved more accolades, he was Rick Dalton, he nailed that role. It’s amongst his best performances.
I know Ordinary People should have not won the Oscar against Raging Bull but regardless of that, that’s a pretty good directorial debut by Robert Redford (or is Ordinary People in the same bucket as Good Will Hunting? I hope not). Hard Eight, I mean that’s fucking solid too for a debut.

@@shutup_murphy I guess that's what happens when you try to cram a whole book into a 2 hour movie. I still think the interaction between the son Peter and Cumberbatch was interesting, Peter being probably the most interesting character. Joe and Raanan two of the funniest comics out now this pod opening had me lol

I agree!
Raanan is the friend you love to argue with. You need different opinions to make life interesting!
Different views and opinions are fine, but a lot of his takes come across as just reactionary and contrarian, like Armond White, which is cringey af.

One of the best music choices for a movie for me is Radiohead -analyse at the end of "Prestige" its just perfect

“A Serious Man” is their take on the biblical story of Job. So Ranaan is right that he has no agency, but that’s kind of the point.
