  • Two tries from David Pocock and one from Sekope Kepu saw Australia kick off their Rugby World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory against Fiji at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday.
Pocock's brace gave the Wallabies an 18-3 first-half lead before Kepu added a third to give Australia a seemingly convincing lead.
However, Fiji showed their never-say-die approach when fly-half Ben Volavola touched down and Nemani Nadolo converted to set up an enthralling finale as Australia chased the elusive fourth try and bonus point.
The Wallabies had drawn first blood in a first half littered with penalties when Foley kicked over and Nadolo levelled the score in the 21st minute.
Number eight Pocock touched down in the 26th and 31st minutes.
Kepu added a third with a powerful drive and Foley converted to put Australia in control before Nadolo gave Fiji hope with a lone penalty but it wasn't to be.
An early blow for Fiji came when wing Waisea Nayacalevu twisted his knee in a tackle with Michael Hooper and was forced off. Nayacalevu was replaced by Asaeli Tikoirotuma.

Pocock is all class... what a monster. I remeber before his injury when his game revolved all around pilfering/fetching the ball and solid defense. After his injury though his game has just leveled out so well. Great ball runner, insane command behind a rolling maul and just an overall perfect #7 or #8. So glad we have him....

Fiji played better in this game than against England. Kept their composure in the last 20 as well. Volavola attacked the line more here, allowing their backs to get a little bit more forward momentum. Good luck to them against Wales.
Wallabies good and solid first half, excellent defence with 14 men in the second half, but geez we really need fix our line-out issues, I'm glad it happened now and not later on. England fans may be laughing at us about not getting the 5 points, but that's disrespecting Fiji's progress more than Australia. Anyway, I'm happy for the result and glad we got minimum injuries - Slipper should be ok.

This was a really good 'Forwards' Match... The Aussie scrum looks better than England's...

How good was that stalemate scrum!! Penalty could of gone either way in my opinion, but good to see the wallaby pack finally improving

during the maul of the Australian second try Pocock clearly separates his shoulder from the Australian n° 2 (the player in front of him) and remains "sticked" only with his hand. Isn't it a foul??The ref was very close and didn't call anything. Is it ok? Some years ago wasn't it a foul? Something has changed?

. . . a disorganised Fijian rucking there, I must say, otherwise they would have done a lot better than the score line suggested. Never mind better luck next time Fiji. Pretty much open as to who will go forward from this group. Your guess is as good as mine. . .
