7 Things You Didn't Know About the Basenji
Basenjis have been used as hunting dogs by various African tribes for thousands of years, but they have also captured the hearts of many Westerners. Here are seven fascinating facts about this ancient breed you may not have known:
Number 1. This Might Be the World's Oldest Dog Breed
Cave paintings found in Libya and dated to 6,000 B.C. depict hunters with dogs that have curled tails, one of the Basenji's distinctive features. Basenjis have been represented on Egyptian artifacts as well. According to historical evidence, they were brought to Egypt as gifts for the pharaohs from Central Africa.
Number 2. They May Have Inspired an Egyptian God
Anubis, the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife, has a human body and a canine head. No one knows what animal inspired this god, but it does share the Basenji's distinctive pricked ears and slender snout.
Number 3. They Are Hunting Dogs
Basenjis are excellent hunters. Intelligence, courage, and adaptability were all prioritized in the development of the breed. These characteristics aided the dog in the field, as the dogs frequently worked out of sight of the hunters.
    Number 4. They Don’t Bark
Because the larynx of the Basenji differs from that of most other dogs, it is unable to produce a bark. They can growl or yodel, but they don't use their voices very often. As a result, African tribes who use Basenjis as hunting dogs will adorn them with bells. The hunters follow the sound of the bells as the Basenjis track the prey.
Number 5. They Didn't Come to the West Until the 1900s
Basenjis have not been bred in Western countries for very long, despite the fact that they may be the world's oldest dog breed. In 1895, the British attempted to import them, but all of the dogs they brought died from distemper, a viral infection. The Basenjis were not successfully established in England until 1937, and they arrived in the United States shortly after.
Number 6. They Are Very Independent
The breed has a reputation for being self-reliant and aloof at times. With strangers, Basenjis are alert and cautious, open and calm with friends, and loving and protective with children.
    Number 7. They Groom Themselves
Basenjis groom themselves in the same way that cats do, so they don't have a dog-like odor. The Basenji has many cat-like characteristics, including self-grooming. They are self-sufficient, aloof, and difficult to train, and they usually only bond with one or two family members.

Do the majority of Basenji yodel or the majority will never yodel? Is the yodel hereditary? How will I know from a litter which puppy yodels and which one not?
