All opinions are my own
I know people are sick of dragon books, but I haven't read much, so I appreciate the recommendations. I love The Roots of Chaos books.
Are people really sick of dragon books? I haven’t seen any big ones besides fourth wing
@@skittlecornnation4323 I've seen the sentiment around a bunch, but it's probably just prevalent in some online spaces. Personally, I can't get enough. There are also non-European dragons I have yet to read about, so I look forward to reading about those dragons and other dragon-adjacent creatures.
@@pauieeepau I’m trying to find one that scratches that dragon itch. I need a dragon story that redefines the genre like what twilight did for vampires
@@skittlecornnation4323 good luck. I just started reading again last year, and I've only read a few dragon books.
Also Naomi Navoik "His Majesty Dragons"
Having grown up with the Pern series, I can tell you that there's an irony to the question "is it better than Fourth Wing" considering both books pull the trick of "the dragons say we have to be mates, so we don't have a choice", except in Pern's case, it has the excuse of having been written back in 1968, but also the dragons fly each other in a mating dance, and whichever male catches the queen becomes that dragon's mate, with the bond acting as a conduit, which is what causes the humans to start going at each other in response.
Fourth Wing does it in a much less tasteful fashion, although I will admit that a lot of the Pern series has what most today might refer to as "problematic" content (McCaffery's whole thing with female characters being bitches to one another for no reason, the color-coded hetero-leaning nature of the dragons, the whole Queen Flying thing, so on and so forth) . It's still an enjoyable read, so long as you keep in mind that it is a book series that has not (imo) aged very well for the modern sensibilities. The later books do better, having been picked up by her son (grandson? I can't recall) who is steadily making the world his own in that regard.
All that said, I heartily recommend Naomi Novik's Temeraire series - it has wonderful world building and characters, and plenty of dragons.
Oh yes, would definitely love a comparison video essay. I do think (especially the first few books) dragons of pern has dated badly particularly with the main relationship dynamics but I do really need to reread them myself.
i remember practically nothing from the series so i def need to reread before backing up my rec 😬
@@alilbitmads F'lar is not the most accepting of Lesser's want to be involved and have agency as far as I remember. I vaguely recall it getting better in the later novels and I chalk it up to author writing in their times then learning.
HEY! INHERITANCE SLANDER! I completely agree, the first book is not good. But I actually got into Eragon by watching the not-good but fun film and then reading books 2-4, and I believe that to be the CORRECT way to approach the series. The following books get a lot of fun magic training, REALLY WEIRD fae-like elves that everyone should love, dwarf king elections, crazy wife guy cousin Roran, cursed children, secret family connections... It gets SO GOOD in the most campy fantasy adventure way later.
BIG VOUCH i love the concepts in this series especially in the later books, they are SO FUN. the first one is definitely ehh (author WAS 15 at the time to be fair, if i remember correctly?) but these books genuinely shaped my enjoyment of fantasy media after reading them as a tween. I'll love them forever.
Oldies, but good -- R.A. MacAvoy's TEA WITH THE BLACK DRAGON and TWISTING THE ROPE.
Exactly the kind of recommendations I'm looking for. It's the vague read this if you like this recommendations that A.I. could never accomplish and it wasn't just every obvious book that many lists have. Again! Again!
i was literally talking about dragonology with a friend today. we saw wizardology at barnes and noble and yeah. all of those books 100% better than fourth wing.
I love Robin Hobb. I did not like fantasy before but her books blew my mind, I’m converted.
Please do a Game of Thrones video essay! 🙏🏾
🙌🏻
Thaaaanks dor Uprooted. It made my day to see it on the list. Yeah the Dragon is sooo diffetent in that one.
.
.
If you would like a foklore inspired movie than He, Dragon aka Love is a scary thing is sooo good.
I just picked up a vintage copy of Dragonflight and would love a buddy read!
Only book series I remember reading that has dragons in it was Dragonkeeper
Robin Hobb's RotE is my favorite serie ever. I finished it a year ago and I have been unable to read anything else since, it was so intense. So I've started re-reading it 🤷♀ to anyone hesitating : go for it, keep tissues nearby and read it in order (you can easily find it online), you won't regret it. Oh, and bear with Fitz, he can be annoying but it will all make sense.
the bear with fitz is so true, he is so hopeless lmao
I read the entire Inheritance Cycle as a teen and (mostly) ate it up but now I kinda want to reread it as an adult to see how it holds up
I'm glad you're back with a new video, Madi! 😀
Great video!
My favorite dragon book: The complete book of swords by Fred Saberhagen
Me watching this while 80% done Fourth Wing 😂
Either a lot of people hate Eon by Alison Goodman, or have never heard of it. The moment I started reading Fourth Wing, especially with the mysterious dragon who has not had a rider in a long time, Eon immediately came to my mind. I had to re-read after Fourth Wing to make sure I did not imagine that amazing series. Then I just got mad at Fourth Wing for having more plot holes than a sponge, all over again.
well i couldn't finish uprooted and haven't read fourth wing so i'm taking this as a sign that maybe i shouldn't
Downstream, what we will call 08:10 will probably come out of a deep dive from some of John Truby’s books [Anatomy of Story & Anatomy of Genre]. For example his point about Achilles’ Hero’s Journey versus Odysseus’ Female Hero’s Journey Think there and back again like [SPOILERS!!!] Dorothy’s Journey from Kansas to Oz & back to Oz
What do think of creature stories similar to Jaws? There us a series of books involving killer Big Cats by the author Luke Phillips. So far the series consists of the following.
1) Shadow Beast.
2) Daughters of the Darkness.
3) Phantom Beast.
Did anyone read the novelization based on the Dragonology book as a kid? Because there was one! It was like a little excursion to find and study dragons with some cryptozoology uncle or something...
Sorry, dropped in to say “All of them”….
There's also a Wizardology.
I still haven’t read Fourth Wing 😬
Starling house has dragons?…. 😅
Any, tbh.
Wings of fire??🥺
never read those but i’ve heard they’re good!
Add Fireborne to your list!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
uhhhhh, blue eye shadow? but im a straight male. you sure about that?
completely chill dudes wear the blue eye shadow :)
@@alilbitmads *reduces his chill*
Wouldn’t there Greek-ology just be Mythology?
well “myth” isn’t exclusive to greek history it’s a general term for religious stories.
👍✌️🙏❤
