      Honestly, I would say the Crescent City books by Sarah J Mass are worth a shot. There are adult themes and things going on in the books, as she is well known for. But it is actually handled well, fits into the plot, and doesn't overstay its welcome so far. The story is interesting, and it has some downright action-packed and brutal moments in it that are awesome. However, take all this with a grain of salt. As I learned with this author, she can turn everything on its head and not in a good way, and there are only 2 of the five book series out at the moment.

      Totally agree with you!
      Also it's highly annoying when there's so many romantasy books between the actual fantasy and you more or less have to look inside the book to see if it's free of spice.
      Nothing against spice or romance, but I want real fantasy where said topics are basically bystanders to the story, but not the center of it

      @@sk4348 i actually prefer fantasy romance myself, (tho not interested in any of the popular series) but hate that it is mixed with with regular fantasy because they are so night and day. the bookstores aren't even consistent about it, like stuff like fourth wing and acotar is in fantasy while similar stuff such as plated prisoner and fbaa are in romance. which means if the reader wants similar stories you have to look in both sections and its really hard trying to navigate the fantasy section because its not romance. i think it would be good for both readers to separate the two so readers get what they want more easily.

    • @searchanddiscover
      @searchanddiscover ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Literary would be shelved in general fiction here. But romance would basically include smut, erotica and regular romance stuff you see in regency and contemporary. There is also paranormal but fantasy romance has started to replace that. It just needs to be better understood bc adult fantasy should be for books that focus on fantasy elements first. General rule of thumb is if you can remove the romance and still have a story then it’s not romance. If the story falls apart it’s romance first most.

    • @Merian8
      @Merian8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it is still adult fantasy, it simply has romance. This book isn’t focused on the romance, so it wouldn’t make sense to distinguish it as romance fantasy. Yes, I’ve read it.

    The thing the botters me the most about those "romantasy" books is that they read like YA, in both the writing and the more superficial exploration of themes, and at the same time posess A LOT of gore and sexual content. It causes confusion, since it feels like the writters dont really know for whom they writting for, teens or adults.

      I think when you say "it reads like YA", you are probably referring to the fact that it has... subpar writing. Which is often the case for 90% of the books published in the YA genre. However, the issue comes when these subpar writers are also horny adults who are eager to write smut and 'adult' themes. So they go ahead and write these books, but because their writing capabilities are nowhere near actual literary authors, they just shoehorn it into the YA section where they know it will be accepted. Hence, there's no real audience they are writing it for. It's just their own smut fantasies vomited out on a page.
      Now, I'm not saying that ALL YA books are subpar. It is just that in the last few decades the genre has become so inundated with mediocrity that people don't even question it anymore.

      There is a warning in the book telling you what it contains and the front cover isn’t subtle so the publisher or author cant be blamed on this one. Also for me this not proper fantasy it’s romantasy where fantasy is in the background and is just used for romance purposes which is why there is no major world building.

    The book community as a whole needs to stop listing books as YA just because there is romance or because it is written with a female audience in mind. I'm only 2.5 minutes in and the amount of times he called Fourth Wing YA already has me screaming. Don't get me wrong, I found Fourth Wing mediocre at best but IT ISN'T YA!!!! It is adult fantasy. It's not good fantasy but it is adult. Same with Sarah J Maas's books in his last video that was called YA multiple times. While both A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass started in the YA section, they are no longer considered YA and both are now listed as adult fantasy. Sarah J Maas's other book series, Crescent City, was released as adult fantasy. The reason this gets me riled up is because YA typically is marketed to maybe around 12/13 year olds to 18-25 year olds, maybe even some older people. There are scenes in these books that I personally wouldn't be comfortable out right marketing to 12/13 year olds. Sure, they can get their hands on these books and can even read worse online but it's different if these books are being out right marketed to them. Especially if there are scenes or themes that they might not be ready to come across. The same themes are out there in age appropriate texts. I don't believe in banning books and believe anyone should read whatever they like as long as they are aware before hand what it is they are reading.
    Just because a book is fantasy with a heavy emphasis on romance, written by a woman, and is marketed largely to a female audience doesn't automatically make the book YA or somehow less than other fantasy works.

    The part about their dragons being horny is actually so… minimal? It’s talked about so much in this video that it sounds like it’s recurrent or super important but it’s not. It’s a single scene from the MCs POV who happens to be feeling what they’re feeling, but the scene is focused on HER, not on the dragons. It is weird to sexualize dragons and I did find it weird to read, but about the dragons themselves, it’s very minimal! I think it’s a bit blown out of proportion in this video, tbh!

    This was the same issue I had with the book. First half was fun, school vibes, challenges, making friends, overcoming fears and using her knowledge from being a scribe to survive. ..... Then the second half happens : / . goes to ultra horny, and unhealthy obsession with Riorson and depletes the plot. When you were reading about his muscles I spat my water out! The bond isn’t that she’s horny because her dragon is horny-the bond in the beginning makes it hard to differentiate her feelings from her dragons. This emotional leakage, you could call it, is important-because the narrator tells us that dragon bonds become stronger each time a dragon bonds. The theory is also that Violet and Xaden’s dragons being bonded leads to the likelihood that they are fated mates as well.
    The plot is actually super interesting. The potential directions the plot can go are what make this book what it is.
    Romantasy isn’t for everyone. 😂

    Everything in this book was extremely convenient. I understand your point about the dragons. I think it does sour the romance. Enemies to lovers are typically slowburn and it just feels like a plot device to speed it up to get to the smut. It also feels uncomfortable because until it gets to the se*ual bits, the MC reads like an immature 15 year old girl. Then suddenly, she acts like a p*rn star. It is ... jarring.

    It is just Twilight 2.0, big media repercusion and publisized under the fantasy tag, may be good or an ok romance novel but also a terrible as a fantasy novel because as i said they use fantasy as the bait not as the main focus of the story.
