Interesting. Is this different to what’s often called a sinkhole? … where a train pushes the track down slightly as it passes because of a failure with the track bed often caused by rain, creating mud (I’m in Australia so terminology may be different). 🤔
It sounds very similar, when I think of sink holes I think of huge holes appearing in roads or swallowing houses. Wet beds do cause the tracks to be pushed down, what i know as voiding. The track is pushed down into the space, or void, below the sleeper
Many many wet bed sites throughout NR are caused by the lack of proper drainage ever been installed in areas like cuttings and areas with more than 2 roads where tracks are surrounded by other tracks, add to this the total lack of drainage being cleaned out like it used to traditionally yearly leads to the formation failing long before it was meant to! To make it worse I have even seen people posting pictures of major renewals sites with track being installed without any thought of drainage in ares where it is clearly needed!

Welcome aboard!
Very interesting. As a guard it's always good to know what's battering my knees on a daily basis. I liked your 'underlying issues' pun. Subscribing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the sub!

@@thepwayengineer Yes, voiding is basically what I’m talking about.
Thank you. Always good to keep it simple.
You are welcome!

I couldn’t agree more. Possibly the railways most unloved but critical asset
