  • This video was produced some years ago and whilst the railway safety rules have, of course, changed since then the principles of the repair work shown still represent best practice.
Whilst it is preferable to carry out this work within a "Green Zone" it is perfectly acceptable for it to be done whilst traffic runs at line speed provided the necessary protection arrangements are in place.

Nice to see the 'wet bed' problem filmed - memories of Amey Rail work back in that time when i was fitter and a lot younger !

L&P and booked tamper on your section plus good ballast profile and condition shouldn’t give you a wet bed . As a former patrolman , we had a divvy manager who briefed the night gang about the electricity at work act 1974 , then asked me if when I was on days the following shift if I would take the lads out onto the down main fast during the peak and dig out a nasty wet bed that was right on the tip of the juice rail ramp end and was bubbling and fizzing away nicely , and would I do it without a form C isolation! ! ! I replied was he on drugs ? , give me the isolation and a possession and I’d do it was my reply . You couldn’t make it up .
We had such a bad wet spot by the single line tunnel at Raynes park on the up , 15 beds worth of slurry broken keys , missing housings on some sleepers , it was a potential derailment, it was like that for over a year the section maintenance engineer was horrified whilst out on a walk with me , I used to keep a copy of all of my walk out patrol sheets in my locker in case the office denied it , I had reported it every week as did my mates in the gang , half a dozen tie bars were put on ASAP and two weeks later they re laid the track. Horror stories from a railwayman of twenty years I could tell .

I see they are using the peewee safety monitor which was never brought into service.

PeeWee was and remains in service to this day. ILWS was never brought into service.

It's shocking to see that this is still the best practice method.
The actual on track method is far and away from this.

In order to complete the work the rail surface should be ground as many wet beds are caused by imperfections and irregularities on the rail surface This should then stop a reoccurance
