Metroid Dread is exceptional. I’m really glad Ben and Brad managed to articulate the incredible balance between having you feel completely lost and guiding you where to go ever so gently. That balance is so finely tuned, it’s perfect

Talking about a master class in game design, can we talk about the first encounter 8n the opening cutscene?
Slighr spoilers for the most obvious boss in the history of obvious bosses, but that's your warning:
Samus's first encounter with Raven Beak shows you how to fight his first form. She ducks his screen filling g attack, parties his grab, and gets caught by the charge you can't parry. That is awesome.

I finished Dread yesterday and had a blast, I'm not the fastest Metroid player, in fact I'm pretty slow, but the all killer no filler essence of Dread really shines no matter how long you take to finish it, there's no bad area in the map, no bad boss fight, no anoying sequence, it's such a dense and exciting experience! Several of my favourite boss fight in the series in this one.

Damn you guys nailed my feelings on Dread exactly. Even down to how the EMMI rooms become more like puzzles themselves where you even have to figure out how to take them out. Before this came out and everyone thought it was a Super Metroid, the conversation was “Do we need a Super Metroid remake?”. Now I’m ready for that to come out next year at the latest! I’m fully sold on Mercury Steam handling 2D Metroid games going forward. Personal GOTY for sure.

For me how good the DualSense has been is due to the ergonomics and the grip on it. I have a lot of pain problems with my hands with nerve damage and arthritis and the DualSense is easily the most comfortable and least fatiguing controller of all the ones I have. The Haptics are cool, but mostly just cool. The physical comfort of and ease of use is always the most important part of a controller for me. I also just got a Switch OLED with Dread, my first Switch, and I've been rather surprised at how comfortable the Switch itself has been in handheld mode. I didn't expect it to feel as good and be as easy for me to use as it is. I'm less sold on the Switch Pro Controller tho.

    • @mwmrhdm
      @mwmrhdm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The haptics and triggers are cool on the Dualsense but ergonomically the Xbox Series controller is the most comfortable controller I've ever used in my 25 years of gaming. The part where the black and white parts meet on the Dualsense handles sticks out instead of being flush and its kinda annoying.

Duelsense is pretty cool but only times it really felt different was with Astro Bot. I personally think it is a huge improvement for Sony controllers but the Switch Pro and Xbox controllers are just as good if not better in certain areas. The D-pad on the Pro is pretty awful though.

I think the xbox series x is the most comfy controller, followed by Switch pro....but man, I don't know what had you have, but I was on pain due to how bad the ergonomics of the Switch controllers on handheld mode were. Uncomfortable, plus Mercury's decision of not allowing for button remapping, and not using D-pad, made getting those tough shine spark items even more mechanically harder.

Metroid Dread blew my expectations out of the water. I was really hoping that we'd see Metroid Prime 4, so I was a initially bummed that Dread would be a side scroller. Never in my life have I been so happy to feel like a complete idiot. Perspective aside, Dread is everything I want out of a Metroid game. It's atmospheric, immersive, gorgeous, challenging, and GLORIOUS. It doesn't unseat Prime as my favorite in the series, but it probably edges out Super Metroid as my second favorite, and it's hands down my game of the year so far.

Loved the convo on Farcry 6 and I agree alot with Ben, especially about the representation angle. It is of course familiar but has lots of stuff worth talking about. However, I'd disagree with Huber abit (from the HOTTAKE part) about the scale of Ubisoft games because I feel like it may come from the bubble of games journalists. Because for better or worst most people aren't sick of Ubisoft open world games based on nearly every new entry being the record selling game for that franchise.
While AC Valhalla might feel like a step too far for game reviewers who have to rush through every single release - including massive open world games - your average consumer is both not going to rush through it nor would they have paid most of the other ubisoft releases. I have alot of more casual gamer friends who play FarCry and Assassins Creed and I never hear complaints about the 'Ubisoft open world fatigue' because these guys play the same game for months and they don't even realise the same Company publishes both games. Its also about old fashioned perception of value. To many people Valhalla being £45 for about 80 hours content is a great deal. Not to mention in the UK and Ireland this game has been used for advertising for tourism and museums.
So I don't feel your average consumer links Valhalla to FarCry and gets tired of them. I think this extends outside of game journalist bubbles to hardcore gamer bubbles. About 5 of my more casual gamer friends also played Last of Us Part II, loved it, and were completely unaware of both spoilers and any controversy. Could be a UK thing where the online culture war doesn't crossover into Mainstream media as much as the US.
This isn't to say anything Huber critcised was wrong, or Ben and Brad, because it isn't. But I feel when you are in the games industry and gaming communities (like me and yourselves) your perception can become abit warped. Like most people I know just play FIFA and Call of Duty - and may get a few big releases a year like AC, FarCry or the Sony exclusive. Their awareness of the games industry and dynamics of companies is very slim.
Sorry for the long comment - side note I loved hearing you guys talk about music you hated, got an actually LOL out of me which is rare.

1:22:30 Correction(?): The song Huber hates is actually not "Brand New". It is simply an inferior cover of the original "Beggin" by The Four Seasons from 1967. The current circulating version is by an Italian band Maneskin, but the song was also prominent a dozen years ago with a Madcon cover (with hip-hop infusions) and was used by many dancers, B-boys, etc. And the music video even featured Halo 3.
Give the original (or Madcon) version a try and see if you prefer it to this current cover.

You start out completely overwhelmed in Metroid Dread. You play like a complete amateur. After a few hours, you perform things much more smoothly, with room for improvement.
By the 3rd playthrough, where you're completing the game in 4 hours as opposed to your initial 10, you FEEL like Samus. You are *fully* in tune with the player character with how fast you execute EVERYTHING. You BECOME the badass bounty hunter. This is where Dread excels; you're immersed in the game because you manage to play as skilled as Samus actually *is* in universe.
Side Note: Burenia is fucking AMAZING. It's like being able to explore Kamino, and underneath this giant research station in the middle of the ocean is this giant network of coral caves as water trickles through the half broken facility. It's everything I loved about Wrecked Frigate Orpheon, but without being completely totally submerged the entire time. It legitimately feels like a place that has been worn down by the ever present force of the sea.

Sucks hearing that Back 4 Blood is really made for 4 players and it’s harder to do solo or with bot companions. I understand it’s a co-op game first but most of my friends don’t play games and I played Left 4 Dead solo or with 2 players all the time as a lad and rarely had issues.

I wonder considering Dread was rebooted multiple times in the past 15 years if the reason why MercurySteam made such a starking jump from Samus Returns to Dread is the fact Sakamoto/Nintendo recorded all the mistakes/good ideas of the previous iterations of the game, thus creating some kind of rulebook to not messing up the game. Also budget has to be a big factor, most Nintendo games from 2016 and 2017 on 3DS and Wii U were made on pennies due to the flop of the latter system. When Dread started being developed probably sometime in late 2017 (Samus Returns was out in September) the Switch was already considered a very successful platform.

    • @Ayoul

It's very common in any kind of production to do post mortems on what worked and what didn't. It's hard for me to believe a specific list of things were sent to MercurySteam who had proven themselves already on Returns, but there's no doubt there were back and forths between them and Nintendo and both studios' past experiences shaped this title throughout its production.

Once a hot coffee goes lukewarm I often must commit the sin of microwaving it in order to finish without wasting. An iced coffee that's gone room-temp is also pretty meh, but at least it's more fixable with ice or fridge

Old podcast, but binging some Frame Trap and wanted to comment.
I love how Metroid Dread turned out. It's so good. It was my system seller, bought a Switch to play Dread and have 0 regrets. Voted for it in the Game Awards, favourite 2D Metroid game and looking forward to the future of Metroid with how well it's doing.
On the topic of 2:11:30 though....... Mini rant ahead:
That kinda hurts. I used to genuinely love Star Wars, looking forward to the new releases. Now though, anything new on The Clone Wars still excites me. Still play SWTOR as I love that continuity way more (despite the EU's many flaws) than whatever Disney has made with its continuity.
New Star Wars games I enjoy it in a bubble, but hold no excitement over what it holds for the larger world, as it feels so disconnected from the larger story (Fallen Order was fun, but there's no mystery or intrigue that I feel when I play the Jedi Knight games and how those stories got me invested in the EU).
Looking forward to SWTOR's new expansion coming. Won't be playing it day-1, or for a while, because I'll be playing Endwalker. But definitely looking to eventually coming back to SWTOR. It has ties to KOTOR2, my favourite Star Wars story ever, so it already has me sold.

3:15 Coffee: you can 'f**k up a basic cup of coffee' by simply using bad ingredients or cooking them wrong, just like with everything else. Their are 100's of different coffee bean varieties from across many countries and continents, their are 10's of different processing techniques (washed, pulped, natural etc), there are 1000's of coffee roasters, there are 100's of different pieces of equipment that can be used to roast the coffee, grind the coffee, heat the water, brew the coffee etc etc etc... not to mention there are endless recipes and doses... basically, unless care is put in at every stage you will get a bad coffee.
I'd say a good 70-80% of the coffee that people drink is 'bad' coffee (to my taste). When people who've been drinking instant coffee their whole life taste a well cared for and well made cup of coffee for the first time it blows their minds! Coffee can taste of peach, blackcurrent, cotton candy, cinnamon, treacle, blackberry, strawberry, pistachio, almond etc etc etc, without adding anything to the coffee beans apart from water... pretty incredible...

Quick Resume is amazing in combination with gamepass. I got a 3 year old kid and not that much time to play videogames anymore. I got Returnal for the PS5 but everytime i want to play it i look at the clock and i'm like "what if the run lasts longer than 1 hour?" making me play other games instead of Returnal. Backing Hubers point, yes the load times are crazy fast now but being able to switch within seconds is awesome, especially for rogue like games

    • @Ayoul
      @Ayoul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

He didn't take into account the incredibly long logo sequences each game has when booting it up. Quick resume brings you back right into the game most of the time. Ironically Ghost of Tsushima's loading into the map is extremely fast, but if it updated, you have to wait for all the logos for what feels like over a minute.

Listen, Ben, ***you don't even understand*** . This game has so many intentional, sanctioned sequence breaks that it's insane. The path that starts you on the first break is a little obscure so just look it up if you don't want to search for it, but trust me - do it. So much of the game is re-contextualized to support these breaks it will blow your mind. Something that seems like an innocuous superfluous addition when you're following the main path will completely enable this alternate way of playing the game. So much so that it genuinely feels like you're playing a remix of the game. And these breaks enable boss quick-kills to reward you. It's sick. DO IT AAAAAH

Great conversations! I feel like Huber feel more confident to express his opinions more lately, I'm all for it!
Something I however disagree with is that the industry are too harsh on games, I feel the opposite. When it comes to at least the AAA industry, games are just repeating themselves with refinements to story, voice acting and tech. While game mechanics and gameplay is lagging behind. Sure there are some exceptions, but for the most part we play the same things over and over for decades. And that should be a valid criticism to games, a UBI title for an example shouldn't get a higher score than a 6 unless they're doing something that feels a bit more fresh. Because they have repeated their formula over multiple franchises since Far Cry 3. How can that be acceptable? I get the warm blanket conversation, but only for something that doesn't happen too often and something is making a tribute to that game, like tormented souls does for RE Remake. But making a franchise where even they have a structure with their villains in the far cry series, then it's just straight out lazy and poor. Vaas described it well in far cry 3 with, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

They are an Italian Rock Group who recently won Eurovision with their original song Zitto E Buoni th-cam.com/video/QN1odfjtMoo/w-d-xo.html
Beggin is actually a cover of A Four Seasons song from the 60's which may explain its play on a classic rock station slightly. th-cam.com/video/lJyWoD38E_s/w-d-xo.html
I cant fault Huber, while I actually do like Maneskin and the cover it is being extremely overplayed and that kills a lot of songs real early. Props to Frankie Valli and the Boys though they are likely seeing some nice royalties of that cover I'm sure.

During that whole conversion where Huber and Ben were getting really passionate and excited, Brad said like 2 sentences, which basically means he doesnt give a shit about that kind of stuff, which is the correct attitude to have.
