    "In my charting software, if I wanted to - it's not gonna stop me ..." haha, no, but it will throw the red card. :) SO surreal seeing you use the software now that I've finally got access to it and have been using it for a while!

    Hi Barbara. Brilliant explanation as usual. The mystery isn't as strong as it was.
    It makes sense like a balance scale what you add you have to take away to keep things level. I think that's right at least!
    Thank you. xxJane 🐑🌼

    Knitting your two-row lace shawl at the moment It's such a lovely pattern and makes a skein last forever.

      I'm glad you're liking the pattern. That is one where you have a double decrease paired with two yarn overs.

    I would appreciate it if you could do a tutorial on the sentro knitting machine, and how to avoid and fix drop stitches. The world needs you!!!1

      I'm afraid I have never used a knitting machine and if I decided to try it out it would be a very long time before I reached a level of competency that I thought I could make videos about it. Machine knitting and hand knitting are so very different I wish they had even more different names. LOL

    What an excellent video. I love to make charts so I understand what I’m doing and I started charting when I was doing short heels for socks and colorwork. For me, I found it helpful to have a color behind the stitches so I could see how many stitches are on each row as they increase or decrease and or what color I should be using. I made a grid in Procreate so I can make changes and note what row I’m on. Hope that makes sense. Thank you for pointing out the other software, so useful. ❤

      What you do sounds very much like what Stitch Companion allows you to do. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    Thank you for the great info on lace knit. Also, I just noticed your kpop lightsticks on the bookshelf 💜

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. My shelves are a little chaotic. The lightsticks are SKZ & Ateez. If you look closely you'll also see Lt. Cmmdr. Reiker, various Spirited Away figures and a Grand Moff Tarkin stuffie among other brik-a-brac lol.

    This was like pulling the curtain back and exposing The Wizard! I've seen the diagrams for lace ( many in Russian) but didn't know they are from Knit Map and how functional they are visually! Thanks again for a wonderful and useful explanation!

    Thank you - that was so very interesting. I enjoy knitting lacey things, but am so often put off by the charts - this video has made them so much clearer.

    Wonderful class! I love knitting lace and enjoy finding beautiful stitch patterns and designing simple rectangular or triangular shawls for myself. Nothing as intricate as your beautiful shawls which inspire me to keep learning, but all lace is beautiful to me no matter how simple the design. Thank you for the information on the software for charting. Looking forward to playing with them.

    This is interesting. I've been working on a Lace Shawl (Magic Waves) that has a moving set of y/os and decreases in the repeat, which is also unbalanced (on purpose) making for a jagged edge (increases then bind off). I had a lot of trouble initially because the "repeat" actually split y/os or decreases where half of the decrease was on the before the repeat start and half after and my brain exploded. This was my 2nd lace shawl and was more advanced that I realized.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I almost talked about stitches being "borrowed" from other repeats but decided that was too advanced for this video. But indeed that does happen horizontally in more complex lace patterns. I'm pretty sure I've talked about that in a previous video, or perhaps it was in lace classes I taught.

    For a question - You noted you start on designing in your software, and maybe also in the visualization tool (which is super cool). Do you swatch before you release a pattern to make sure it really works? Does the auto-written always makes sense or do you have to clean it up? What features of enivisionknit do you like vs. other charting programs?

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, there is so much swatching. Then I typically try to write out the pattern and start knitting from those instructions. Then I hit things that don't go the way I expected or I have an idea halfway through and I change things. It's a whole process and where I start is rarely where the end product comes out. But I would never dream of releasing a pattern if I hadn't knit it start to finish. I mean, I have to have something to photograph, no?
      With regards to the program, I do not use the auto-written feature at all. I write all of my instructions from scratch. A couple of the determining factors that made me decide to go with this software was the ability to export the charts as scalable vector graphics (svg) which means that I can place them into my page layout software and change their size without any loss of resolution (no pixelization). It also has the ability to create custom stitch symbols and there were a few other things that made it stand out for me when I was deciding on software (many years ago). I am sure that many of the other software offerings have since added some of the features that they didn't have when I was in the market, but I am happy with EK and have no reason to switch at this point. If it ain't broke, don't fix it LOL.

    This was very interesting! I'm intimidated by lace but want to give it another shot soon. Do you think the Love Note sweater by Tin Can Knits would be a good beginner lace pattern? It looks simple (for lace) to me, but I'd love to know what you think!

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tin Can Knits is well known for writing clear and easy to follow patterns and I have seen hundreds of Love Note sweaters, but because it is a paid pattern I have never seen the instructions. The lace itself does not look like a basic lace so I don't know that it would be good for a beginner, but you are quite adventurous so it might work for you. My biggest concern is that the sweater calls for mohair yarn and that is definitely not what I would recommend starting off your lace journey with LOL. But lots of people substitute different yarns so that might work.

    I love lace patterns but I always shy away from charts but if I must, I would "decode" it and write it out and follow that. I guess they seem a bit intimidating to me.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If charts aren't your thing then writing them out is a good solution. I had one friend who would write the rows out on a series of index cards and put them on a jump ring so they could flip them as each row was completed.

    Do you have any suggestions with top down lace pattern, where there are yarn over increases on both ends and on both sides of the center?
    My problems seem to happen along the center yarn over increases because the lace pattern repeat is interrupted by those center yarn over increases. Thanks

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm afraid that's a much bigger question that you might realize. You've identified one of the significant challenges when designing which if/how to integrate increases into your lace/color/cable pattern. There is no one answer on how to do it and it can be quite complicated depending on the complexity of both your increase pattern and your stitch pattern. I talked about this a bit in this video but I'm not sure where in the video you can find it. How to change shawls from one shape to another: th-cam.com/video/Fp1U0qazl_U/w-d-xo.html
