This is going way way back, but that reminds me of Yahtzee's review of and my feelings about No More Heroes. It has all these stupid boring busywork activities you have to do between the fun combat bits, and the game is like "But we're doing it ironically, for style reasons!" And Yahtzee and I were both saying "Boring busywork for (supposed) irony and style reasons is still boring busywork." I threw up my hands and stopped playing when I hit a point where I did all the busywork and the game told me "fuck you, you don't get to do the fun combat this time".

@@arcanum3000 Much like Duke Nukem Forever with a bit where he comes up to a valve puzzle and says, "I hate valve puzzle." Instead of the game understanding why it is boring and just allowing us to mow through it with great violence it instead forces you to actually do it. If one knows something is either tedious or boring then why include it at all?
And yes I know picking out faults in DNF is like finding grass in Central Park but still. It is one of the first things that comes to my mind with this "ironic busywork".

The way Yahtzee talked about the gameplay rewarding you for pointing the camera at banal stuff instead of the character drama, reminded me of _Night Trap,_ where there is a "plot" happening, but you're not allowed to look at it, because if you spend any less than 100% of your time catching Augers in _Home Alone_ traps, you game over. Great game design.

    • @YorkJonhson

Reminds me of a game called The Final Station, which I actually thought handled the concept in a vaguely interesting way. The premise is you're a train conductor moving packages and survivors around during the apocalypse. Survivors will talk amongst themselves while you're busy working, so you only catch snippets of their conversations about what's really going on, because keeping the train moving is your real main priority. It could be frustrating, but I also kind of liked the ambiguous storytelling of feeling like you're just trying to keep your head above water while the world crumbles and you don't have the luxury to stop and ask too many questions.

    • @squmulonimbus

The carabiner for girls is a lesbian joke. Lesbian butches often wear carabiners in every day outfits as a code for other lesbians to know. That way they can flirt in public more easily, especially if the other person also has a gay signifier.
Some of these codes have died out with the rise of queer-inclusion in dating apps, but they're still important cultural signifiers and memes.

Seems like one of those dumb ideas that gets into people's heads, like how it used to be that a man wearing an earing on one side of the ear meant one thing and wearing on the other side meant he was gay. It's just idiotic, because it's basically trying to send a hidden signal without outing yourself, but either the signal is too obvious and everybody knows (like the earing) or its too subtle and doesn't signal anything at all (like the carabiner). Though it makes perfect sense to me that men would err on being too obvious while women would err on being too subtle.

The format did intrigue me when the first trailer landed at SGF and I did presume the underlying tone would be corporate and almost fourth wall about what actually creates ratings compared to what's actually interesting. Whether that ultimately translates into a fun game of course is another matter, and maybe needed a setting where the drama and interesting elements of the relationships still helped boost ratings instead of the potted plant.

4:19 Haven't laughed that hard since the 5th of August
4:52 By the way, one of my bst friends took classes with the producer for the first 6 seasons of Big Brother (Argentinian Version) and infodumped me about it for like 2 straight hours. He showed me all his notes. It's incredible the shit they do and _don't do_ to keep the demographics in. One in particular was a villain planning all his stuff with no producer involvement and then giving them a note just before he did it, or how they brought back an overproduced woman that was extremely prone to public intimacy because her physical appeareance dominated the "less than 11 years old female" category. It's quite crazy. I wish I had taken that class myself XD. I still have a recording of like 2/3rds of said infodump and a slightly blurry picture of the notes somewhere.

From what other comments have said, it's not about rock climbing, though that might have been a joke created to explain it to people who aren't lesbian but ask about it. It's instead something that they would accessorize with instead of a more girly piece and then it changed into being a symbol that could be used to identify themselves or others with so that it is easier to flirt in public.
