    Hi question for Richie: I quite like your list and approach and I think we don't play in a dissimilar way, but I've been introducing more rangers and gyros as well to really control the board more (scout, vanguard, mobility). This has been working well for me, but have you played around with more rangers also, and why don't they feature in your lists as much?
    Also, how do warriors with a BSB reach static CR of 7?

    • @Dawiafterdark
      @Dawiafterdark 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Hey mate , Richy here :) so I’ve tried millions of list variations and for my playstyle I don’t actually want that much board control , I want people to come to me , if I have rangers and gyros out and about in the midfield I’m handing points away , but if they are working for you that’s amazing I couldn’t get them to work in my playstyle :) so the warrior unit is close order , 2 ranks , banner , rune of battle , bsb and rune of battle of battle on bsb :)

    what formation on you putting your units in to be able to automatically go into marching column using drilled? as for example if your 10 wide with 20 men, you can only maximum remove 5 from the front rank with drilled? so best formation would be 5x4 which isnt marching column?? just wondering for best deployment set up?

    • @CloseOrder
      @CloseOrder  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think Richy tends to value the static Combat Res on the less punchy units more than a handful of S3 Warrior Hand Weapon attacks.
      They only need to be 4 wide to get a rank bonus being Heavy Infantry - so if you start 4 wide or 5 wide (helps fit everything close together in deployment) which gives you flexibility to go either way.
      Anything punchy or shooty e.g. Iron Drakes/Rangers/Hammerers is more likely to start 10 wide

    • @FannyFlucke
      @FannyFlucke 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      IMHO the answer is inbetween (I like 7 or 8 wide, 10 is too much) and also depends on how many characters on shielbearers you have in that unit, because that is a 4x4 model. You can count that quite easily, but also plan in some reserves, if you get shot.

    45:55 That's the thing with Dwarfs, is the shoehorn. If you want to win you have to play a certain way and that is deemed poor design and boring. You have to turtle, you have to min max the "strong" units. You have to ignore half the units like cannons, organ guns, slayers, hammerers, longbeards etc,

    • @mrsnakesmrnot8499
      @mrsnakesmrnot8499 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I remember when old world came out, many folks said that a gyrocopter or three was necessary to win, but we see none in Richy’s list. …and with Richy’s list, a player could remove the 5 strong detachment of iron drakes and a rune from a catapult, and a dwarf model from here or there, and replace that with a gyrocopter, organ gun, another catapult, etc. based on preference, and still have a great list. The point is that there are other builds that a dwarf army can have, but it takes a guy like Richy or perhaps yourself, to yet discover it. I am not betting that Richy’s chosen path of success is the only path possible. Even before the arcane journal arrives, I bet that another viable dwarf list is out there undiscovered and untested. So, I gotta give credit to a trailblazer : Richy’s relentless play testing has boiled down this awesome list, and his generalship at the table, to deploy with screens (defense “in depth) is laudable, and something not done by dwarf generals in past editions.

    • @BananenbaumEY
      @BananenbaumEY หลายเดือนก่อน

      thats the mindset which is literally the opposite of the one you need to be actually good at this game.

    • @pinch1loaf
      @pinch1loaf หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mrsnakesmrnot8499 So Richy leans heavily into the the BEST dwarf units, ignoring the bulk of the unit roster to achieve his success (just as I described) and you call that undiscovered? Nobody uses quarrellers and thunderers. Its always rangers and irondrakes. He says he doesn't rate the cannons, bolt throwers and organ guns. He takes stone throwers. His list is a turtle list. His playstyle is stand and shoot. He deploys back in a tight formation, uses artillery to force the enemy to him is the quintessential dwarf battle line.
      Richy has done what one needs to do which is lean into the dwarfs static nature. When one leaves that template things begin to fall apart.
      My argument was never that Dwarfs are bad, or can't win. My argument is if you want to win, you need to embrace the archetype and understand what Richy understands when he acknowledges things like the Anvil at 39:15. You can't play this dynamic unit matching game. You just have to stand back and control as much as possible where the contact happens with deployment.
      This whole discussion Richy reinforces that you have to play a certain way with dwarfs:
      44:34 - "In a Dwarf book there's no one singular thing that's gonna win you the game..."
      46:00 - "you can't compare a little short guy to a dragon... you can't just run across the board and smack people. There is a certain way you're gonna have to play."

      @mrsnakesmrnot8499 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People were not excited about using dwarf warriors this edition, preferring to spend points on rangers, but Richie taught us how to use core warriors to win tournaments. Richie was one of the first, if not THE first, to discover which units work the best in this edition, by trying everything pretty much. It’s easy for everyone to now say that 5 to 10 fire drakes, as a screen, with troll hammers, are better than cannons in many respects, but guys like Richie figured this out by their pioneering spirit. No gyrocopter? Not a single one? A stone thrower can do more to a dragon than a cannon? Most players weren’t even thinking about this possibility as they cried how badly cannons were nerfed and dragons improved, but guys like Richie started to make stone throwers popular. I am just giving credit where it is due. Richie’s synergy with certain banners, the anvil, etc. to give that skirmish line a better ward takes some investigation. Richie has recently tinkered with the new journal to create a tanky and flighty king (convention has been to make only a tanky character) and use the anvil / bugman’s cart to stick that king’s unit an inch away from the enemy line. Richie was the first guy I heard describe how static resolution was the best way for infantry to beat a charging dragon, and then he described exactly how to build that CR. I dare say that most players did not consider Richie’s formula there. Richie is still going to test the boundaries and best combos of the list, hoping to find something that we haven’t quite seen yet. At the end of the day, you and others know the list’s limitations/ Strengths, in part to shared expertise from other players who have experimented a lot. 👍

      @@mrsnakesmrnot8499 You're missing the point. I'm not knocking Richy. I'm applauding him. I am 100% in agreeance the man. If anything I'm knocking everyone else that finds this surprising.
      I've been very vocal on the dwarf design front and that's been my main gripe from the first days. He even says it: "There's a certain way you're going to have to play". Like BRAVO my man, BRAVO. FINALLY someone is saying this! I can breathe a sigh of relief.
      The fact that people are calling this pioneering is what's astounding to me. I don't mean to rob credit where it's due, but call it pioneering when a dwarf melee build starts taking tournaments. Call it pioneering when people find a way to make a hammerer death star work, or cannons, bolt throwers and organ guns. pioneering is when you take the mediocre or less optimal aspects of thing and make them work. That's pioneering.
      Its not surprising that a list full of irondrakes and stone throwers and rangers is good. It's not surprising that the banner that gives the entire unit a 5+ ward save and anything in 6" a 6+ ward is good and should be built around.
      I applaud Richy for recognizing and vocalizing that the shoehorned design aspect exists. That you just got to lean into it and play a certain way with dwarfs to be successful. Stop trying to fit the square into the round hole.
      I can't see how anyone else interprets that any other way. I've never once said dwarfs were bad. I said their playstyle is restricted if winning and competition is what you're after. This is all reinforced by Richy. To whom is say THANK YOU!

      Pretty sure it's only the grudgethrowers as they have runes. They're not very accurate of course (more or less hitting a single model on 5's?)though they do decent damage. I suspect the solution to the problem posed is actually static combat res though I could of course be wrong.
