I learned that taking in a deep breath as you come back with the ball then hold your breath as you start throwing, the increased pressure helps you rotate with more force. This is a trick weightlifters use for lifting a bit heavier (eg a one rep max). This trick alone helped me gain about 4-5 ft since I was stuck around 78ish.
The straight arm throw was not allowed at a very recent CFA. Candidate got ZERO points using this type of throw and was told that a 90 degree arm angle was required only after all three attempts were made.
If this is true it was a poor interpretation of the rules by the moderator. The instructions are fairly clear: 1. Keep his/her knees parallel to and behind the baseline and on the floor during the event. May use a mat to cushion the knees. 2. In an overhand throwing motion, throw a men’s basketball as far as possible (Figure 2). 3. The non-throwing hand may be used to steady the ball before throwing, but only one hand can be used to throw the ball (e.g. no two-handed throws) (Figure 3). It is possible that the moderator in looking at Figure 2 assumed that a 90 degree arm angle was required because the figure depicts this. However, it does not say in the instructions that a 90 degree arm angle is required. More importantly achieve a 102' throw with a 90 degree arm angle would be virtually impossible. The overhand windmill/catapult style throw is the only technique that makes sense given the average and maximum distances expected for the test.
According to the video listed on the West Point website, this is not the way to do it. It clearly states that this is a shoulder strength exercise and their is no twisting involved. Straight throw over the shoulder.
I don’t see anything wrong with it. th-cam.com/video/9L7y_SdQQm4/w-d-xo.html He did it one handed, with both knees on the ground, and didn’t fall forward nor did he touch the ground

78?! The most I've ever thrown is 59! How are you throwing that far?
I really love the CFA videos! I am definitely going to start practicing these techniques since I take my CFA in a month!

I got 58 ft on this test I am a man. I am retaking the test and will make sure to practice this technique.
How do they calculate it? Is it averaged between the three throws?
@@elzarayhatter985 It’s your highest throw
when I do well on every other aspect besides the throw... 58 ft :/
i think the throw is the hardest part lmao
very helpful
This is very much the incorrect technique to throw the BB and will disqualify you. Please watch the official West Point throwing video.
