I bought my two piece suit from BKS in 1998, measured by Brian. 21 years later, in 2019, and the suit was still like new, but I was no longer the same shape! Another visit to BKS, and alterations made following yet more personal service from Brian. This is an outstanding company, producing garments which are second to non, and an example to the rest of the industry.
I will beat that y a year + i was measured by Brian at the NEC in PL,suit deld Feb 97 and one ofthe first with CE markings.Still fits (despite a few it shrunk periods) clean and treat it every year.wife refuses to lift/move it as is so heavy but light and comfy while wearing it....execpt in high temps.Hopefully back for more .
Yes they are able to alter suit, it costs a fortune, I know! The leather suits will last forever with care but seem to have fallen out of fashion, even the police have gone textile. I’ll stick with the suits I have until I hang up the keys, man of leisure. I also have Streetguard heavy and light suits, full leathers in 30C+ is not pleasant.
The motorcycle industry needs more people like this gentleman who truly care about the men and women who ride. I’m always reinforcing my own off-the-shelf motorcycle clothes with more armor. Bought a pair of Kevlar leggings and did an abrasion test against denim on a repeatable rig, the outcome was quite disappointed with both sanding through at roughly the same time.
I had a new BKS M2M leather suit in '96 and used it for over 20 years for commuting, European touring and Sunday afternoon rides. It must have shrunk a little around the waist (because I'm sure I didn't grow!!!!!) so had a new BKS M2M leather suit in 2018. Again, it's been used for all my riding, and I've never found it to be uncomfortable, even in some long days in extreme weather. BKS M2M is the ultimate motorcycle kit and every rider should consider buying their kit.
I phoned BKS today and spoke to Brian about the textile suit as I am interested. Very knowledgeable and no hard sell. Sounds like a chap I could do business with. Just got to work out if I can justify sliding the knife into the piggy bank to invest in one.

Exactly - it's why informed choice is so important! People should wear what they want, but they should do it in the knowledge of what that gear's capable of, not based on marketing hype or influencer twaddle. Cheers, John
Fascinating story, passion and quality craftsmanship. You will never beat hand made bespoke kit, my Altberg boots are a testament to that 10 years on. Sadly it does highlight just how important your brand is and arguably the most valuable asset you can have. For many people who don't know the background they might not realise that the suit they pick up from J&S has nothing to do with the far superior product they would get from made to measure yet they see the name and it could influence them either way based on their experience of either product.
Next time I’m in the UK, I’ll definitely visit BKS and get a 2 piece Leather Set made. Thank you Bennetts for introducing me to this brilliant Company.
So refreshing to hear from someone who isn't interested in building to a price point or massively growing their brand and instead just wants to make the gear that's best for the job. I'm guessing this video will prompt a few orders at least though!
I took biking backup 3 years ago, I’m 51. I’ve never heard of BKS but I’m glad I have now. When I bought my kit 3 years ago nobody mentioned what level of protection it had, the salesman seemed very disinterested and couldn’t have cared less. I’m no in the market for a serious textile suit because I ride my bike everyday in the UK and I’m sick of being wet and cold. I found this interview really informative and illuminating thank you.

I have had 3 suits made by Brian and his team. I still have my 15 year old two-piece road suit (unaltered because I look after myself). Sadly the other 2 one-piece suits have both been cut off me but that's racing for ya. No doubt my injuries would have been far worse without BKS quality. I have spent a lot of money but I have had the best protection. The bonus is wearing a suit that properly fits; they really do feel amazing, both on and off the bike.
I bought a BKS Motorcycle Jacket about 15 years ago when they were available to buy off the peg in the shops. I can honestly say, it was the best motorcycle jacket I have owned since my Belstaff I bought in the 1980s. I used it daily for about 5 years commuting to work in all weathers. Very highly recommended

Thanks for commenting Roland. These suits take up to 100 hours to make and whilst £2500 is no small sum the investment hopefully pays for itself when we hear over and over how much has been spent on kit by clients.....before finally reaching us.
Great suits, I have two. It is actually worth getting one of these suits as they will last and you don’t have to replace - plus if you have invested a significant sum of money in a suit you have every incentive to stay that weight 😀 I didn’t need the second suit but it was a super upgrade and really comfortable
@ 13:00 Explains a tonne to me in Canada: all these brands trotting out AAA stuff with fabrics that aren't traditional moto fabrics, (appreciated the coverage comparison graphic at 15:00) so some of us are a mite confused. I'm now asking vendors what standards ( or level of threat as Brian says- great phrase !) they are tested at. For shops etc I'd love it if you visited a North American ( or any other country for that matter) brand to compare the differences- say Aerostitch. And/or any of the ladies owned Brands- Uk or otherwise! Thanks for the reportage!
Hi very good interview with Brian Samson at BKS without doubt his suits are superb both in fitt and quality, I am 75 years old and bought my first suit from him in 2006 which like most people l grew out off it ,whilst on holiday in Sept last year in Devon I Telephoned to say I would be passing his shop on the way home in a few days ,despite being his day off he met me on my way, measured me we had a good chat ,l drive down from the Isle of wight and I took Delivery of my new suit complete with Alpinestars air vest two months later ,if you want the best quality and fitt and can afford one without doubt hand made by Brian and BKS must be on your your list 10/10.
I bought my first made to measure suit in 1996 I used that on the road until 2003. Then club raced from then until 2006 and many crashes. In 2007 new BKS suit used for club racing until 2012. Re used the 1996 suit from 2012 until 2013 Bought a new BKS suit in 2014 used until 2016 when my dad died and I retired. Not cheap suits but when you crash you will be glad you paid the extra. Super quality and great fit and last longer than any other suit.
Great interview and what an interesting guy. I only knew about BKS off the shelf clothing and never knew the captivating story behind the Brand. Never knew its a British Brand either , so I've now been educated and all the better for it. My original thoughts on protective clothing in the 80s was a pair of Dr.Martin boots and a Donkey jacket with Leather elbow patches for all weather riding and cargo shorts with again Dr.Martin boots for summer. Had many falls in the early years and never got too badly hurt but 40 something years on I don't Bounce so Good so Decent riding Gear is Important.
This was fascinating, and I share with others in the collective gratitude to you and your team for educating us as you all do. I'm an American, who was turned onto European safety about 1.5yrs ago and it's been, hands down, the most revolutionary and transformative part of my riding. I wear a Shoei RF-1400 (I forget the name of the analogous European model), and everything else is European AAA (Knox, Merlin, John Doe, and Stylmartin). Now learning about bespoke companies like BKS is giving me something new to drool over. Thanks for keeping us safe and emptying our wallets lol.
This was a fantastic interview. A very interesting company. Please visit other interesting British companies. In the EU we are not used to UK success stories. Please keep them coming. This makes me consider a visit.
This was very informative and appreciated. One trend that is becoming wide spread is UHMWPE materials used in protective garments. What I would like to know about UHMWPE is how does it perform and what does it do to the skin when heat exceeds its melting point as I've heard is possible when sliding down pavement. Abrasion is fine but if the material melts users need to know what happens to them.
Thanks for the comment. Layering is important in the phyics. Our textile suit has several layers of lightweight fabrics underneath the outer shell and if you wear 'skins type base layers' the risk of any melting at skin level is removed. The shearing forces and buffering across these layers and how our suit works in a crash seems to prevent this from happening. Message me at the office and I'll show you some independent testing results from other sourse too. bksleather.co.uk/textile
@@bksmadetomeasure4964 Thank you for your reply; makes good sense. Also, I have seen base layers made using 65% UHMWPE for the purpose of wearing under regular "street" close made of say cotton. I was wondering if given that cotton will disintegrate right away leaving only the UHMWPE base layer for abrasion protection and will it melt? I mean - UHMWPE is very comfortable, cool, and flows air well so could be ideal if it doesn't melt when put to use.
Excellent video, very informative and eye opening. You really do excell at these interviews, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next. Considering the mentioned J&S, how about an interview with the head or designer for J&S and then perhaps SBS. This reminds me of the interview you did with Evotech and it's just as informative and helpful. Trouble is now, I REALLY want a BKS textile suite! Keep up the good work
Top quality gear. I stil have a pair of leather trousers from BKS and theyre still going great after 22 years of wear in all weathers. I look after my kit and it looks after me.
Amazing interview & knowledge sharing by someone who knows & cares about top end safety..As someone respectful of manufacturing ability his know how is acquired over years of experience..I thank you for sharing!
Fantastic too see that without the baroness we couldn't have these amazingly top quality items and businesses. Just less quality mass production EU dross... British standard, quality & made was & is always better.

Very interesting. I didnt realise the original BKS had kept going in made to measure. I always thought they de-branded themselves with the Frank Thomas deal as we all knew FT meant made in China crap.
It was always meant to be a joint project going forward with my BKS always continuing MTM (which it did of course). The plan of action ended when FT went into administration and a management buy-back failed taking it out of our hands. I know how confusing it must look to those buying BKS elsewhere but I'm happy to explain - call us.
The haptic feedback in the jacket that "taps" you on the shoulder if a car is approaching from the left or right is a great idea. I wonder which e-bike company is commissioning such a jacket!
I'd definitely love to see interviews with RaceFit🔴, Spondon & Harris. This video also finally enlighten the BKS made to measure vs the commercial BKS leathers question to me. I was wondering why are there two different leathers called BKS. Wasn't Arlen Ness leathers what became the BKS afterwards ?
Getting back to riding, I have done an insane amount of research on gear. This interview with Mr. Sansom, has been the most educational and eye-opening by far, and the world, (America) should take notice. Well done.
Hi praise indeed, thank you for your comments. Our work is never done and this back story needs to be told for the benefit of all those who continue to be new to this market.
Fascinating stuff I've heard of the the company but had no idea about who runs the company and the products and the quality of the garments, enjoyed the video ,
Thank you for commenting Martin. Our website aims to show lots but our Instagram and Facebook pages show our entire gallery of client work...take a look. www.bksleather.co.uk
I’ve been lucky enough to have a set of custom BKS 2 piece leathers for 15 years now and more recently a custom set of textiles and 2 piece leathers from hideout leathers. Both companies are really nice to deal with but the BKS leathers just fit nicer and feel more substantial.
Brilliant video, absolutely fascinating and great to hear a true expert. Totally changed my understanding of made to measure, where's the credit card.... I absolutely refuse to believe the passing of 35 years has had such little impact on Brian though, what's his secret?!!!
Thanks very much that was really interesting.I thought Two grand was a bit salty. Then I saw the price of a new telly doesn't sound so bad. Can't afford a new telly either
@@bennettsbikesocial …not sure about the “out of reach” comment though. In most cases, it is more about setting priorities. You often see people buying expensive bikes but wearing second class helmet and gear. Just one example where setting different priorities would lead into proper gear (but pot. some PS less…)😉
My BKS suit is off the peg, not made to measure, and overall I'm very happy with it, however, at the second time of wearing it the zip connecting the trousers to the jacket failed and some stitching came undone. BKS carried out repairs under warranty without quibble and fitted a chunkier, heavy-duty connecting zip as per my request. The takeaway from this is that the leathers are mostly well made but that isn't a guarantee that they won't fail in some areas but BKS are great to deal with when things do fail.
It's very important to know that BKS off-the-peg leathers have nothing to do with BKS Made-to-Measure. They are two entirely different companies (Brian talks about this in the video)
These wont be my handmade leathers from Exmouth, but a suit made in Pakistan with no connection to us whatsover. I'm glad you are happy with it though and one day I would like you to see the 'real' BKS version.

Brian really did strike me as someone who's always willing to go above and beyond. All the best best, John
BKS, Hideout, Scott.
3 British companies you can go to for the best leathers and textiles in the world and also excellent more affordable kit.
Brilliant interview
Thanks! All the best, John
Thanks! I think that Shoei is the NXR-2 here. Cheers, John
Keep up the good work
Please consider featuring the British company Roadskins, terrific kit and service.👍
Great insight into BKS quality products and some one who cares about safety and his products.
Would be good to do one on Hood Jeans
Fantastic video! Well done and good luck to those clever artists at BKS. Whish I had the money for one.
Great video. Thanks John.
Thanks for watching! Cheers John
Top quality gear. I stil have a pair of leather trousers from BKS and theyre still going great after 22 years of wear in all weathers. I look after my kit and it looks after me.
Great video, thank you for the information and sharing your experience. One of the few videos where I never skipped forward.
Awesome, that's great to hear... thank you! All the best, John
went to bks in 2007 brian measured me still got my leathers and they are still like new

Amazing interview & knowledge sharing by someone who knows & cares about top end safety..As someone respectful of manufacturing ability his know how is acquired over years of experience..I thank you for sharing!
Thank YOU for watching! Cheers, John
Wow I now know wher to go for my next suit, when the pocket allows I will be in contact
Thanks for a great piece of professional journalism
Thank you! Cheers, John
Excellent video and interview. Very informative.
Really like these long form videos!
Thanks! Cheers, John
Fantastic too see that without the baroness we couldn't have these amazingly top quality items and businesses. Just less quality mass production EU dross... British standard, quality & made was & is always better.
Excellent information. Thanks.
Excellent and informative discussion about motorcycle safety equipment. Thank you, I really enjoyed this video.
Your videos and IDEAS for videos are absolutely brilliant.
Please continue with this “series” of videos and continue to think outside of the normal !
Fantastic content, a brilliant interview with intelligent questions. Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back !
Cheers,
ER.
Thank you so much! Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.
You really are an excellent motorcycle journalist and I have yet to watch one of your features without being very impressed.
Have you patted yourself yet ? You should ! I insist 😉
Thanks again for your efforts !
ER.
Great insight, Great company and Great Guy👍
Mr. Bennett,
This is the second video of yours that I have watched.
Today I decided you do some good work and so I subscribed.
Thanks so much! All the best, John
Very level information from Brian. Wow!
Thank you for commenting Ian. We just want a level playing field in this business.
The haptic feedback in the jacket that "taps" you on the shoulder if a car is approaching from the left or right is a great idea. I wonder which e-bike company is commissioning such a jacket!
Thanks for another excellent insight into the motorbike apparel industry!
Thanks! Shooting the next one later this month. All the best, John
This video is insanely good, Brian is really good at explaining also. thanks.
Thanks for watching! Cheers, John
I’d love it if you did one like this on Scott leathers and Altberg boots who provide my motorbike gear for work
Getting back to riding, I have done an insane amount of research on gear. This interview with Mr. Sansom, has been the most educational and eye-opening by far, and the world, (America) should take notice. Well done.
Hi praise indeed, thank you for your comments. Our work is never done and this back story needs to be told for the benefit of all those who continue to be new to this market.
Thanks very much! All the best, John
The haptic warning technology is something I’d really like to see integrated into the Alpinestars tech-air airbag.
Brilliant video if I can afford a BKS made to measure suit I will, definitely buy one
Great video, I will have to wait to win the lottery before I can afford one
Love this guy - but state of the art @ 3:30 was hilarious when you see the computer and program 🙏
It was state of the art for us in 1997...we've made it last a very long time! Still old school in some ways :-)
This was a brilliant interview. 👏
Thanks very much! All the best, John
interesting and educational .. nice work
Thanks! All the best, John
Both great examples of companies dedicated to the safest riding kit
Very nice. Great interview!
I love your show.
Thank you for the informative video! Learned a lot!
Brilliant, thanks! John
Brilliant video, absolutely fascinating and great to hear a true expert. Totally changed my understanding of made to measure, where's the credit card.... I absolutely refuse to believe the passing of 35 years has had such little impact on Brian though, what's his secret?!!!
Thanks very much for watching! Yeah... I certainly don't look much like I did 35 years ago. All the best, John
No secrets here David. You'll find BKS is very open about everything it does and fully transparent :-)
Great vid.
top bloke never heard of them before but if i need a suit ill buy from them
Thanks very much that was really interesting.I thought Two grand was a bit salty. Then I saw the price of a new telly doesn't sound so bad. Can't afford a new telly either
Fascinating interview
Thanks for watching! Cheers, John
When I consider what i’ve spent on biking clothing over 45 years of road riding … you know the rest!
It's a good point. This is out of the reach of many, but its potentially a wise investment for many too! Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Would love a set of leathers from them, maybe one day soon. 🤔
@@bennettsbikesocial …not sure about the “out of reach” comment though. In most cases, it is more about setting priorities. You often see people buying expensive bikes but wearing second class helmet and gear. Just one example where setting different priorities would lead into proper gear (but pot. some PS less…)😉
Excellent!!!!
Thanks! All the best, John
I had no idea about the company . I’ve only ever seen the off the peg J&S .
I hope to get one of these suits at some stage
W video this is inspiring to watch my dream is to learn how to sew leather so that I can create leather jackets
You have to have a ten-dollar head to wear a ten-dollar helmet. Then at the other end of the spectrum If you have a priceless body wear a BKS suit.
This series is really expensive to watch lol. (but thanks, actually fascinating)
Ha, yeah there is that danger! Cheers, John
