I'm probably being a bit thick here but I'm stuck with the very first step. If you pull the core out one end of the rope, surely you're just left with cover at the other end?Or is this done with two separate lengths of rope?
@OCDADVENTURES101 It's a 'deck knife' & usually comes in a leather sheath. There is never a sharp point on a deck knife in case you were to fall on it in rough weather.
I bought some 5mm of the line. I have the same tools as this gent has and plenty of experience doing splices and there is no way to pull the cover through to start the splice. I have concluded that he is splicing 4mm which must work better. If anybody here can splice 5mm then please let me know how otherwise I am off to buy another brand
Awesome! just what i needed for my 49er vang:D thanks a lot!

@solo4386 - You need to use the (excel control) wire splicing needle shown on the video, available from rooster or any other Marlow stockist.
I find it difficult to pull the damn rope through! Im using a 4mm small fid. any ideas. this guy makes it seem so simple!
You need to taper the end by removing about 4 twines
Dang that is a gansta shackle key lanyard
