Came here looking for Whiskey Before Breakfast tutorials and see that Orrin passed over a year ago. I took lessons from him in his little apartment in Cambridge, MA when I was a young, dumb college student in the late 80's. What a great, patient guy. Wish I still had the cassette tape of the lessons he gave me. While I've come and gone and come back again with guitar several times over the years, his lessons and the bits and pieces of songs and techniques he taught me have stayed with me to serve as the basis of what I play. Many's the late night I sat playing The Water is Wide for a small group of friends. RIP Orrin Star. Your legacy lives on.
I knew him for a brief time after he moved to NYC. Incredible musician - guitar, mandolin, and banjo. I still remember some nuggets from his rhythm workshop. He was the first guy I really heard in person with "the tone" and he could get it from any guitar.
I studied with Orrin in the 1990's when he was living in Cambridge MA. I still have some of the lesson recordings -- I learned a lot from Orrin, and he was actually a really funny guy, humor so dry it might take a minute for it to sink in -- really smart guy and a good friend. And one hell of a guitarist
Just think Tony joined Orrin and now they are playing before the THRONE OF GOD !!! Loved Orrin's playing from the very first time I heard him !!! RIP my Guitar picking friend !
I just heard a whole year late, of Orrin's passing. I had a few exchanges with him when buying the his dvd. He was a super friendly and nice guy, just like he is here. A great teacher and this little course is put together extremely well. Several bluegrass jam favourites with memorable tunes that are fun to play, are worked over in multiple keys with Orrin emphasising the important stuff in a fun charismatic way. I have no idea if someone is still shipping his products, but if so I cannot recommend them more highly. RIP Orrin !
I took a 2 hour workshop from this guy last week. He is a great and patient teacher. I can't wait till he comes back. I learned more in 2 hours with him than I did in months of other lessons with other teachers. He is Flat Picking Champion? I didn't know that.
Know why this clip sounds better than most things on TH-cam? - because a professional audio/video guy recorded it - for a DVD that the publisher's of Flatpicking Guitar spent real money producing. The TAB for it - as well as for the other tunes included - COMES with the DVD. So there IS something simple that you (and well as all the other indignant freeloaders er, respected fans) can do to acquire said TAB: purchase the DVD.
I recently purchased this DVD. I highly recommend it. I'm learnin' heaps. I don't have access to any formal lessons where I live, so DVD's like this are helping me a lot. Thanks for the great music.
Hey Orrin! I took your workshop a couple of years ago at the California Coast Music Camp. We did Rock The Cradle Joe, Sandy River Belle and Hard Times. I learned lots. I highly recommend you as a teacher. You do a great job.
As good as this segment is, it is only a fraction of the excellent instruction of the entire DVD lesson. Of all the video lessons I own, this is the stand-out. If you're on the fence about purchasing yet another flatpicking DVD, get off the fence and buy this one. Thank you Mr. Star for creating a meaningful explanation of what it's flatpicking is about. I hope one day to attend one of your workshops or a private lesson.
Yes, all the tabs are on his great DVD! I attended one of his recent workshops here in San Diego. Lots of fun!! His version and this video is one of my favorites!
How nice to hear a song NOT played at lightning speed. I don’t know why todays flatpickers feel the need to play everything waaaay to fast. Not only was Orrin a great player but he understands the concept of taste, i.e. the tune is more important than showing off one’s picking skills.
Hey Orrin-I have heard alot of people play this tune and you are the best. How about another video where you just play it "full up" for about 6 minutes? Great!!!
This is a superb video for the level I'm at; THANK YOU!! Only problem is it'll take me DAYS to get in down in tab; is there nothing we can do to persuade you to provide us with the TAB in order to spread the flatpicking gospel, O great one??!!
Motivation has a lot to do with it. But it can be very frustrating, and if you don't have the patience then you will stop before you get a hang of it. I'm 28 now, and I've always been too impatient to learn these things, but I'm starting to pick it up now and found that I have a lot more capacity than I thought. So just go ahead!
Im 62 years old, been playing for 45 years and I understand you. Im a better audiance than I am a player. Frustrating though. Its enought to drive me nuts to see 14 year olds playing better than I ever will.
Love this. I know it's a "C" key you're playing out of...which makes it a "D" after using the Capo. Wish I had the exact tab to show what's going on there. I hate when I get stumped. Guess I'll just have to keep replaying and stopping.
I got that when I started learning the banjo a couple of days ago. Thought I would never be able to pick (unintended pun) out what was being played. One tip I can give you is downloading either the video or just the audio and slowing it down in something like Amazing Slow-Downer. Best of luck. :)
That seems like a great way to completely fuck up your technique. There are so many little nuances to different styles and patterns that require you to watch and understand others in some form, even if you can play by ear.
i agree 100% empiremonkey most musicans wish they did not have to play july bluegrass outdoor events and wish they had went to school and work in a nice cool ac building in the day and pick for fun when they want and not to pay the damn light bill!
"Don't let the glasses fool ya." This is a great lesson! While he sort of looks like he should be cast as a DMV driver testing examiner... Just keep practicing and practice some more. (And keep both hands on the wheel!)
Use the lesson and tab to kind of get a "lay of the land", learn the song, piece by piece, put it all together, then get rid of the tab, or you will always have your head in a tab book. Learn different styles then figure which suits you or figure out your own. My style is a little bit from others, a lot from Tony Rice, some from a teacher, and , my own. Arguing about music? Really? Wow. In music, what is right and what is wrong? Nothing, it is music.
Yeah. But some of those 14 year olds never learn to get a date or pass their Algebra exams. :) If playing music has enriched your life, don't 'fret' (ha!) over what other accomplish.

Crossed paths with Orrin a couple of times, briefly. A fine musician and good guy. RIP ~

I'm learning slowly but surely
Cheers for the lesson 👍

Privileged to have studied with Orrin. Rest In Peace.
Great! I LOVE Orrin's hot licks book.
Hey Orrin-I have heard alot of people play this tune and you are the best. How about another video where you just play it "full up" for about 6 minutes? Great!!!
Thanks for this great lesson for beginning flat pickers like me. I am a hammered dulcimer player who loves the guitar and I want to play like you do.
yes - in the booklet that comes with 2-hour instructional DVD that this is excerpted from.
Very helpful to this struggling picker, appreciate you sharing your expertise...
Thank you Orrin. I learned so much from your video.
Definitely on my list to post, thanks for the lesson!
Great tune, good teacher - thanks a lot for this lesson
All the food analogies really helped!
This is Exceptional.
Very Soulful
DDR
FANTASTIC!
great analogies, great lesson!
You're welcome. (I too have found TH-cam to be a great resource when I'm trying to learn new tunes (most recently some Celtic stuff);
Orrin
RIP Orrin Star.
So sorry to hear Orrin has passed,..... he was a humble funny guy, a great picker and a sweet man,... and he was my friend .....
best lesson on youtube. thank god for this one. i MUST get this dvd!!!! WHERE?!?!?
Great job Orrin, see you at Augusta.
This is a superb video for the level I'm at; THANK YOU!! Only problem is it'll take me DAYS to get in down in tab; is there nothing we can do to persuade you to provide us with the TAB in order to spread the flatpicking gospel, O great one??!!
staaahhhhh!!!! pure fiddle pulse......thank you.

Great teacher
Beautifully done on what appears to be a fine old Martin. D28?
Very nice right hand there sir.
He's right, it took me a day.
brillant cheers Dave
of course it is a Martin, what were you thinking of Red Adams?
Im 62 years old, been playing for 45 years and I understand you. Im a better audiance than I am a player. Frustrating though. Its enought to drive me nuts to see 14 year olds playing better than I ever will.
I believe that is Carter Stanley and on eof their young lead players (whose name I don't know).
i agree. cause surely it should be backward slash. PLEASE tell us why its so! (brill lesson!)
this guy is good
Hows it going Orrin? Do you remember me? We played together years ago in San Diego.
tune starts at 0:57
Could you please announce the chord structures through which you are moving. Thanks.
Nice!
" even dobro"! lol.great video-thanks.

If anyone runs into Billy Strings, please tell him to watch Orrin Star’s videos so that he can hear and see how “tasteful” flatpicking is done!
Anyone have a tab for a reason like this?
The strings are not ringing loud, maybe the gauges are lighter.mm but liked the skills and the piece!
are there tabs for this?
really inspirational. ( is that a Takamine?)
its a martin
@Lynnieburd believe me you could
I agree. I dont even have a clue what his left hand is doing.
super
Has a Celtic ring.
haha this guy likes food references, really good lesson
I like the bit where he plays the guitar
damn,..wish i could play that..i think if i practiced my whole life i wouldn't be able to pay that.
How's it coming along?
right on man but if ever you make another tune show where the fingers go and slowly and repeat it over and over
Get Guy! Hard to learn all the runs by youself. He give you a little seed for you to grow.

if this is a protein bar then I'm on a starvation diet with this one.
"Don't let the glasses fool ya." This is a great lesson! While he sort of looks like he should be cast as a DMV driver testing examiner... Just keep practicing and practice some more. (And keep both hands on the wheel!)
Josh Groban is right. Don't give up. This song is'nt as hard as it looks, just keep practicing slowly and you'll get there in no time!
"What we start out with is what we call "po-ta-toes" i've never heard anyone say it like that i've always just heard "taters".XD
