I have been learning japanese for 3 years and I plan to go there next year for three weeks.
I don't plan to live there in the future, but I just want my first experience to be as good as it can be.
I know it won't be perfect (because I am not fluent at all), but at least I will try to enjoy and speak to people and do my best by speaking their language. :-)

if you're a tourist and only stay here in Japan for a few weeks the answer is YES you can.
However if you're going to live here the answer is NO.
I'm from Switzerland and years ago the company that I worked for suddenly relocated me to Tokyo. My Nihongo ability back then is close to zero. As soon as I arrived in Tokyo I immediately knew that I had to learned Nihongo if I wanted to live a normal life.

Thanks! Cathy Cat 🐱 but really i believe it would be nice to speak a little bit of Japanese especially if you’re going to visit the Country and that’s not a spur of the moment trip or vacation to Japan

I knew a bit with about a year of Duolingo. I flew ANA from Chicago to Manila and when I ordered a sake in 日本語 the stewardess assumed I was fluent. That also happened in Narita on my way back to Manila from a ski trip. I was able to go a bit beyond the basic polite phrases in a few instances. Also, it was helpful when a desk clerk kept saying あと and I picked up he was giving me after hours instructions.

Yeah, i knew no japanese in 2014 and in 2016. It was harder in kyoto and osaka at the time since there was less english...i also was on my own for the most part. I was ok with my phone which i only used google maps. I did use google translate to have a conversation with someone ive been following on fb ever since. He used a translator as well and we were good.

In my travels around the globe I learned a little bit of nearly 12 languages. Just the basics at best. That alone made my time everywhere much easier because even though I butchered the pronunciation often, the people understood that I respected them enough to at least try. Then, they were either willing to help and engage with me or find someone who could help. That simple bit of respect to everyone made a huge difference between me being welcomed or of me being the "Ugly American".
My goal is to expand my basic Japanese so that I can move there in the near future. I am also working on Thai because that is my other target for retirement. I still need to brush up on my long forgotten Vietnamese a bit, too. LOL

Speaking from my personal experiences after visiting Japan 8 times so far in the last 19 years. And the 9th trip coming up this late October 2024. Not knowing any Japanese when visiting big major cities ( Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapparo ) VS. not knowing any Japanese when visiting way deep into the country side is a huge difference.

Great video! I think no matter where someone is going at least know some of the basic but that's just my opinion. 🤷‍♂

    That’s interesting!
As I'm Japanese, I hated to learn English until I made a foreign friend actually.😅
Now, I also use Google translate and Duolingo.
Although my position is different, my experience is similar to them.
Anyway, there are all kinds of people in Japan, but we welcome foreigners who like Japan, and we don't want them to have a bad experience in Japan, so many Japanese people will try to understand what you're trying to say and I think they will respond kindly.😊
P.S. My Spanish teacher said that after people stopped saying, “You're good at Japanese,” Japanese people began to talk to him as equals.

Why go somewhere as specific as Japan an not learn at least learn everyday phrases? Like asking for what you want, where the toilet is, etc…

    • @user-qm7jw
      @user-qm7jw 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

Yeah, everyday phrases like "sumimasen" “Kore kudasai” and “Koko ha dokodesuka” can be learned during the plane ride.
I don't understand why some tourists don't try to learn even this basic Japanese.

U don’t need to learn at all but might as well. It might be more fun. Japan has a lot of places where u order from a kiosk or u can just point the stuff on the menu. I only bothered to not learn cause my sister can speak Japanese however she left before I did.

    • @c-w-h

Use it as a learning tool. Most basic simple questions can be recorded. Allowing you to do a little studying.
Much easier than the way us military brats learned other languanges. It was annoying to own and carry several translatiom books just to get used to a basic conversation. The fact that its much easier now is nuts. You can drop any military brat into a country and within 6 months they will have gathered friends and be teaching other people english.

    日本人は、日本語がマイナー言語だと知っているので、あなたが話せなくても失望することはないです。
    そして、あなたが少しでも日本語を話す意志があるとわかったら、日本人はとても喜んでくれます。

I can do minimal sightseeing without speaking a single word of Japanese.
I think the response of Japanese people to foreigners who do their best to speak Japanese will be very different.

Japanese is difficult to write, so you only need to learn the conversation.
Conversation is easy if you learn the combination of particles and verbs.
