    Knee pain sucks...
    But that doesn't mean you can build strong legs (and have strong, comfortable knees too)...
    Some of the exercises in today's video will surprise you...
    But you'll be shocked by how some little tweaks to specific exercises can make a world of difference in performing leg exercises comfortably and effectively...

      You nailed this one bro. What's your opinion on squats? No hack squats imo, but regular, front...
      I have come to love dumbell squats. My experience with this exercise is that I get more muscle group activation than with barbell squats (ditto for deadlifts)...standard and stiff legged. Of course i use lighter weight loads, but I have better form and mind/muscle connection with these movements 👍.

    AMAZING video! I'm a 35 y/o woman trying to lose weight. I use to do training in highschool and I miss the benefits of lunges. I've tried to do them in recent times and it killed my knees, even with knee supports. So I've been trying to find a way to slowly incorporate lunges back into my routine. I also made the mistake of overestimating my current abilities and signed up for a CrossFit class. Where they were pressuring me to do box jumps and I just had a really bad feeling about doing them. Your video gave me great suggestions and justified my apprehensiveness.
    THANK YOU

    Torn MCL in both knees and ACL and meniscus tear in one knee…..I can attest the forward lounge is painful/terrible! Much better is the reverse lunge or supporting your non lunging leg on a bench. I’m 51 and the notion of “no pain, no gain” no longer applies. Fortunately, their are always alternatives that provide the needed support and sometimes they are the better exercises to do….so thanks to all u TH-cam guys who share those with us!

    I am only 36 but have had foot problems since I was 14 which has also impacted my knees. I really appreciate this as I had surgery about a year ago, completely rebuilding my left foot and, prior to that, I was doing Crossfit and feeling pretty decent. Now I have become very frustrated as I feel like I won't be able to get back to where I was, but with videos like this, I can still push myself without hurting myself and, hopefully, start to move forward again. Thank you

    Ive had tendonitis (jumpers knee) since my early 20s, it's something that has limited the amount of time I can do the sports I love most (soccer and sprinting). Totally agree with your alternative exercises. For me my knee pain is much better if I keep the muscles around it stronger, so heavy squats with good form and no exercises where your knee goes over your toes! Magnesium oil and organic sulphur also seems to help too. I seem to suffer less with it than I did in my 20s so getting the right workout and dietary editions helps a bunch. Anyway keep up the great content!

Great video, I was avoiding most of the 'Worst' exercises but didn't realize that full leg extensions were bad, thought they were ok as i was using my good leg to compensate, will replace with those step back lunges.

      How’re you doing now? I’m 44 and has just been diagnosed with stage 2 chondromalacia patella , along with other knee issues . I’m in a lot of pain and sadly can’t bend my knee much because it also makes an awful clicking sound every time I even go upstairs. Hi Gary. I'm a 50 year old male with a very stiff right knee due to cartilage issues. Watching your video during covid19 lockdown in New Zealand, whilst on my spin bike.
    Really informative and insightful video. I'll be dropping the leg extension when my gym reopens, and focussing on barbell squat using just the 20kg barbell, plus trap deadlift and leg press, for lower body strengthening. Also going to drop lunges, I was doing the type you recommended but even those put too much load on my week knee.
    Thank heaps for sharing your knowledge in this excellent video.

    You are correct in recommending cycling as an alternative to running. However, there is one problem with the dynamics of cycling and that is the proper fit on the bike. If someone has their seat height too high, you will possibly increase injury to the back of your knee. If your seat is too low, which is more often the case, force is delivered at too aggressive an angle to the knee. This can cause two major problems compounding your once only one problem. If you are going to transition to cycling get a proper fit.

    Thanks Gary for the video. I'm retired Army and tore my right meniscus in the 70's, it made "Fun Runs" and the 2 mile PT test a challenge. I trained on the Lifecycle bike during the week and ran a mile on the weekend. By test time I was able to easily make my time. I've been retired for 25 years and rarely run. I walk 5-6 miles a day now since the local gym is closed. Squats are no problem, even though I still do them, front and rear lunges are not my friend. I wear a knee sleeve for some support in the gym.

    I get it Gary but some of these exercises to avoid exercises are in the RA 40 program. I do have bad knees from a lot of running, my former career demands and a lot of out door activity. I have used all of these and had to be careful. Box jumps were never on the menu. I may rethink doing some of these exercises and do substitutions. The ym has been closed for nearly 8 weeks due to covid. The pandemic immediately impacted my life is so many ways. I had to work out at home,, all my musical activities and venues for selling my crafts canceled. I started out working out at home but the stress for the drastic life changes send me reeling into depression and anxiety attacks.I lost interest in working out but still remained active outside when the weather allowed it and I found some energy. Most of the time I felt drained. I did a lot of gardening and prepping for planting, did a lot of cleaning and work on music. I have posted a lot of songs on TH-cam. That and prayer kept me going but not at the speed I was at. I have felt isolated and most days forced myself to go though the motions. I usually have a prayer time in the morning and evening. I have kept that up. I started working out at home again and set some goals. Starting over was humbling. The way thing are here in West Michigan I don't see the gym opening soon and I'd be very caution about going because not everyone is taking the mask and social distancing seriously. I am not sure how the pandemic has affected your area but I am sure it has so I hope your are staying healthy adn your and your family are safe and are doing the drill for your own protection. This is a challenging time but I am finally finding the strength again to cope better and keep moving.

  • @FullAutoApolotics
    @FullAutoApolotics 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm 53. My knees feel pretty good. Well, they did until 4 weeks ago. I was a lifter as a young man. Marriage and life got in the way. Decades later I'm back in the gym (traded the wife for iron, kidding, her heart is made of iron). Here is my question. Recently I noticed a bone issue that resembles Osgood Schlatter. I realize this is impossible to develop as a fully grown adult. However, Xrays have confirmed it is exactly like that. I'm not having massive pain. I I can see a bone growth at the top of my tibia. When I squat it pokes out and it's scary. Doc says no more deep squats. No more heavy squats. I went light last week and had to stop. I did not go deep or push it for long reps or sets. You said extensions were bad. I can't leg press. Certainly would think doing any type of lunge would be moronic of me.
    What confuses me is he said to walk, not to get on the bike, you said the bike it good if your knees are bad.
    I'm freaking out over not having leg workouts.
    I need to figure this out quickly. IT seems like I"m cornered. Any thoughts?

    How come my knees are burning during cycling but not running?

    This video is confusing to me. I have very bad knees that stop me from sleeping. They don’t hurt one bit when l run or walk, but hurt a lot when l bike, sit, squat, lung, and while laying down. Yet this video says don’t run, bike instead.🤨 l have noticed that doing a yoga class centered on calf, quad, hami and glute stretches helps a lot but that’s not always doable before a cardio sess.

    I'm 25 and my right knee can't handle a single lunge. I've always had weird issues with my knee too so I know the issue is linked.

    We're all created equal. Just not identical. Those guys with the weak knees probably have stronger hearts, better kidneys, etc.

    Good advice. Liked and sub’d.
    I blew my left knee with the extension machine, it left irreparable damage which I must work around to this day. I hope others heed your advice. 😎👍

    FYI - running cured my bone on bone arthritis. You keep the weight down and have a clean diet. my cartilage grew back. BTW I am 64.

    I’m only 18, but my knees die on this exercise 3:05 💀 especially the left one. I can’t even do a few of them.
    On the contrary bodyweight squats are relatively easy on the knees

    Cycling only works if you have your patella properly aligned, else is counterproductive for the knee

    I’ve had “bad” knees and tmj my whole life. Easily get injured from leg workouts even with help from professional trainers. Anything other then body weight would cause knee pain.
    Well unrelated I decided to quite caffeine, coffee and tea. Guess what…ALL KNEE PAIN GONE including TMJ. Turns out caffeine was causing inflammation and research has shown it wreaks havoc on joints. My constant lower back pain is gone too. So it may not not for everyone but if you’ve tried everything it may be that coffee every morning.

    Everyone in this comment section is probably older then me and know exactly what their knee injury/problem is…
    And then there’s me, with my knee that literally makes a decently-loud cracking noise whenever I walk down stairs or lift my left leg and we still don’t know whats causing it ;-;
