Interview with Betty Bobbitt and Anne Phelan
Welcome to this special episode of Talking Prisoner. This interview has never been made public, This episode is devoted to the memory of Betty Bobbitt and Anne Phelan. Betty played Judy Bryant between 1980 to 1985 in 429 episodes and Anne played Top Dog Myra Desmond. It was shot as a promo for the charity event on January 21, 2000, at The Forum theatre in Melbourne. Anne was on the organizing committee of the 21st Anniversary reunion party for Prisoner and fans had flown in from around the world and raised money for Aids charities. It was recorded in Betty's living room by the Director (and boom operator) Chris Adshead, you can even hear the trams going past in the background. The cameraman is Noel Penn and the interviewer is journalist Kim Wilson. Barrie Pullen who was the cameraman on Prisoner managed to get the Beta tapes from Chris and convert them to what you will see in this 37-minute interview. Betty and Anne discuss how they got their roles on Prisoner and why they think the show is so popular. Anne shares a very funny story about Elspeth Ballantyne and floor manager Ray Lindsay. Anne talks about her favourite scenes she filmed on Prisoner and what it was like to shoot her final scenes with Betty and how she felt when Betty left the show. Betty shares a very funny story about her son and both Betty and Anne talk about how fond they were of the cast and crew of Prisoner and the special comradery they all shared between them. Anne talks about why she left Prisoner and the special friendships they both had with the non-speaking extras on Prisoner. Anne talks about the preparations for putting together the 2000 Prisoner event and the cast Anne and Betty were looking forward to seeing again and the fans that flew in from around the world for this spectacular event. Lots of behind-the-scenes footage of this interview at the end. A big Thank you to Ken Mulholland and Barrie Pullen for allowing Talking Prisoner to present this amazing interview to all the fans and a big thank you to Chris Adshead, Noel Penn, and Kim Wilson as without you we would never have seen this interview.

I was lucky enough to have a small role in Prisoner in 1982 at 21 . I played Paul White the boyfriend of Kerry Brodie episode 320 .I Remember going to that cast reunion in 2000 and caught up with all the cast it was great. I am 63 now , the years have flown by. I am so proud to have been part of such an iconic show. I was very lucky.

What a great time-capsule for us to be able to look back on and see two old mates talking about their fond memories of a show we all love. Thank you for posting this interview. Really enjoying it. 👍
Was the series ever screened in it's entirety in the US? I was led to believe the show stopped being screened on American telly after the "Tunnel Cave in" finale of 1980 - much to the US audience's dismay. But the lovely Betty mentions in this interview about Judy trying to kiss Georgie Baxter and the US viewers thoughts on this. Although probably filmed towards the end of 1980 wasn't this scene from 1981? (Season 3).
Anyway, thank you again for the transfer across from the BETAMAX tape and immortalised now. Kind of weird hearing Annie say the series debuted "21 years ago". Which really doesn't sound that long ago in today's terms 😮

Wow! what a great interview !kudos to you Matt--great introduction. and kudos to Ken also for all you've done with talking prisoner. The most moving thing is the fact that we lost both of them in the past few years and that they were on this interview together--what a coincidence .I thought the comment from Betty about why America wouldn't tolerate the lesbian scenes was interesting , given the fact that she was born in America and was the only American in the show .I always said that if you watch the series somewhere all of the male pinups disappeared and were replaced with James Dean and Marlon Brando posters. I think that's because when it came to America the censors wouldn't tolerate stuff like that on American television. And I'm speaking as an American who was there in the Eighties when it came on American TV. Kudos again Matt and Ken.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 had Prisoner cell block H and I seen the reruns in the 90s with my Gran as I was born in 83 and I loved it. Now I've introduced Prisoner to younger people who have lapped it up, it's better than Wentworth the new program. Sometimes there's no need to update a series, Sometimes it's perfect as it was. ❤

Very interesting interview. I loved both of the characters in the show. Judy / Betty looks a little uncomfortable at times, however I realise she had been retired and a lot of time had passed since the days of the show. Anne / Myra comes across as very campy. I wonder if she was a lesbian in real life, not that it particularly matters, but it's just the vibe I get from her. It must have been weird how something from so long ago was, and still is, talked about so much. I really loved the strong characters, and how Prisoner managed to be so many different things. It was realistic, yet it wasn't, it was relatable, and yet it wasn't, it was funny, and yet it wasn't, it was brilliantly acted and written, and at times it wasn't. It was rubbish, and yet it wasn't. Watching it is like going back in time! I absolutely LOVED it, and as someone who doesn't care for TV, I was really gutted after I watched the final episode. I felt like I'd lost a family. Best programme ever, bar none! I think it had a very down-to-earth quality about it that I liked, and a curiosity factor to it and a style all of its own. I also loved the way it was filmed and directed. I have visited Nunawading and toured around some of the locations.

Prisoner returns back on TV but not as Prisoner give it a new name what is called Behind Bars but it has the same thing music some of the same characters and some of the same cast so with the new cast set in a mixed prison with men and women actor episode more exciting didn't know that we could pull it off but we did more update about behind bars as a new series with the same thing music of Prisoner state change❤

Something seriously wrong with you if you think they were the worse.. they played very big parts in prisoner cell block H, and fantastic parts too.
