  • A South Korean cargo vessel carrying about 4,000 cars bound for the Middle East was listing heavily on Sept. 8 off the coast of the southern U.S. state of Georgia, an official of operator Hyundai Glovis said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said a pilot and 23 crew were aboard the Golden Ray when it overturned in St. Simons Sound and 20 people had been rescued.
Rescue teams were searching for four crew members believed to be inside the engine room of the vessel, the company and South Korea's foreign ministry said.
The rescued included six South Koreans, 13 Philippines nationals and the American pilot, the foreign ministry said.
The cars on the ship represented marques such as Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, the company official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, said on Sept. 9.
The Vessel Finder website said the ship had recently called at the Port of Brunswick and was headed to Baltimore. The carrier was built in 2017 and was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, according to the website.
The Golden Ray has a capacity to carry 6,933 vehicles according to the Glovis website.

Ships are designed to be "keel" heavy, so they remain stable and upright. This ship could carry 6,500 cars, but only had 4,000 in the hold. If those removed in Brunswick were in the lower compartments, the ship may have been top heavy. Turning the ship or a brush with the bottom at 2:00 AM could have caused the ship to start listing. The remaining load would have been top heavy enough to capsize the vessel, if my suspicions are correct.

no this is the ships fault. Such cargo ships have sophisticated balance and weight computerized controls to keep the ships balance, especially big cargo ships that have tall container or load structures. Their center of gravity, buoyancy are kept in constant check to make sure they can roll with the waves and movement without weight shifting or capsizing problems. No matter who loads the ship, the ships captain and crew double check their cargo and safety features, not the dock loading crew. No captain of such a vessel would ever leave such things to outsiders, especially basic dock workers.

Once in the English Channel in 2002 carrying 3000 BMW Volvo and SAAB cars and once in Southampton in 2015 carrying 1400 assorted vehicles including a £250'000 Rolls Royce. The vehicles usually break free and get all smashed up. Nothing worth salvaging except scrap metal.

To Mr.John Burns: Stands to reason! Unload it evenly! Similar to a railroad's "center beams," a special lumber transporting railcar. All "center beams lumber cars" are clearly stenciled on the inside ends of these types of railcars, than it must be unloaded evenly. (Best if there is a team of two forklift operators performing this function.)
