    Wow, thanks for including that oil change comparison, that is wild! And Leo playing at the made me miss my husky so bad...that voice, so unique to huskies.

    My white husky does the same thing with those types of treats. She puts it down, makes sure there is nothing better in your hand and then eventually eats it. They are great dogs and truly have a mind of their own. Happy trails

    Our grand-dogs are husky and yes, they cannot be just let loose to run. One of them has taken off several times with a human chasing after for hours!!! So, yes, we understand your statements about tethering Leo! :D

    You guys have me rolling with laughter. Kait taking off without you and I was reading your book last night and came to the part where Kait said she wanted to quit her job and be like the Miller’s in the movie We’re the Miller’s then which Joe replied, you want to buy an RV and smuggle drugs across the border. I’m paraphrasing of course but I lol’d imagining the scene. Lol

    • @NoProGoPronto
      @NoProGoPronto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Story Chasing ~ I though that line by Joe was hilarious too. I'm really enjoying their book and their story 😃

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NoProGoPronto oh yes it’s very good. I’m enjoying it too and discovering how they made decisions to quit their job and make money in the road. I work remote for a company so that part has been great for me full-timing in the RV but I’m finding I want to spend more and more time traveling and pursuing my own business. Maybe soon I can quit my job too.

    March of 2016, my husband and I drove from northwest Indiana to California and back home, stopping many places in between. We were driving our car then, staying in hotels. Why I say this is we stopped off in Flagstaff for an oil change too, looks like the same place you went to. We finally after 48 years of marriage, my husband being 73 now and me being 68 got a class C RV in June of 2017. So happy to be traveling more, we aren't full time, just traveling when we want to and the weather is warm enough. Hope to see both of you on the road some time. Glad we have an RV, so happy no more hotels. :) ::)

    Haha Kait... where ya going... glad you didn't bottom out :) Leo, try it, you might like it.. yep, see LOL. Seriously, repair and maintenance costs could take some by surprise if not budgeted for ahead of time. $36 for the oil change is great... costs me $70+ for the basic quick lube here.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey you two, that was the most action I've ever seen from Leo! I was shocked to hear you say the cost estimate for a Mercedes Sprinter oil change. Stick with what you've got and you'll be many dollars ahead of the game! Interesting fact about Huskie's and their wandering off habits. Leo's life is so good with you that he would be crazy to leave!

    The chemistry you guys have is one of a kind. You guys are hilarious. The best things in life are free (especially camping sites). I want your (and my) dogs life. Eat, sleep and answer the calls of nature (just stay tethered so as to not run off 😂). I also thought Kait was gonna make a run for the border without you Joe. 😓Good thing she came back for ya. Love your postings. Keep 'me coming. Stay cool. Loved the ending to video, Leo being playful. Till next time buds.

    Thanks for letting people know why and how crucial it is to keep Huskies on leash. I've done a lot of research on them, and they are quite crafty & needy. I've always wanted a Husky and unfortunately there are a lot of them in animal shelters, but I'm out of the house at least 10-12 hours a day, and it wouldn't be fair to the dog. But as soon as my circumstances change, I'm getting me a Husky fur baby. I'm really enjoying the book by the way 📖😃

      I'm glad to know Leo was a rescue. I didn't know this about Huskys. Many many years ago I was a kid and out in an extremely rural area with a family friend and his dog, a black lab. I noticed the dog was missing and became concerned. He said don't worry, he'll find us and about 10 minutes later, there was the dog back. I don't know what he was up to but he found us again by scent I guess.

    That was sooo funny when Kait kept on driving down the dirt road...should've kept on going, Kait! (Hee hee...just kidding, Joe!!) By the way, did Leo end up eating the Milk-bone treat? My tiny Chihuahua refuses to eat any treats...she's a terribly finicky eater!

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yeah, he eventually ate it....and don't encourage Kait!!!

    • @EmAndtheGang
      @EmAndtheGang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our little dog, Buster is also very finicky! He won't eat the treats from PetSmart or PetCo or the bank! He only likes certain ones - they have to be like real meat. But our larger dog, Piper, will eat any treat offered to her. She's not picky at all.

    • @SparklingGems
      @SparklingGems 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @The Russos - I figured Leo was just holding out for something better! ;-) @Em - My tiny old girl has never ever eaten a 'dog' snack since I adopted her a few years ago but she does like our cats' snacks (tiny lightly crunchy pillows filled with chicken/meat)...but this could be because she only has a few teeth left...poor little thing! :-)

    I own a Roadtrek Sprinter and I've learned a few things about their maintenance along the way. First, Mercedes dealerships are always going to be the most expensive route for any maintenance. I've also seen a wide fluctuation in maintenance charges from dealership to dealership. Sprinters require servicing every 10, 000 miles, and they flipflop between a level 1 and a level 2 service each 10,000 mile cycle. Anyone can learn to do the level 1 service on their own, oil, oil filter and two air filters. I found all the info I needed, wait for it, on TH-cam! The best price for the oil needed that I've found is through thelubricantstore.com. Level 2 services are a bit trickier. Luckily, I've found a quality mechanic, who is honest and fair, to do those for me. Sprinters are my favorite for RVing due to their power, gas mileage and longevity. If I were to do it all over again, the only thing I'd change would be to buy an empty shell Sprinter with 4WD and build it out myself. Love your channel, and really enjoy your vids. Cheers!

    Just a note while boondocking in the Coconino Forest last year some type of Rodent got under the hood of my truck and chewed up some wiring leaving my vehicle stuck at the Flagstaff Ford dealer for a week. I was told this is common and that you should leave the hood of your vehicle open as the Rodents like dark spaces.

      My husband had trouble with mice in his grain truck. We took a net bag like you get produce in and hung mothballs under the hood. Smell not the greatest. We did the same with Decon. Mice did over $3000.00 in damage to my Highlander. Always something.

    It's super easy to do an oil change on the Benz, hardly have to even get under the vehicle, the oil plug is just under the front bumper. Oil filter is easy also. It takes about 50 gallons of oil... well more like 13 qts of specialized (expensive oil - shop for special deals) oil that last around 10,000 miles.

    I love the way Leo just hangs out. Our dog, Piper, would also hang out in the shade. She's a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, and she's not a fan of the heat. She's an A/C dog all the way. We always have to keep a leash on her, for the same reasons - her recall is about 50%... even though she's well trained, she is timid and can get spooked by strangers, and run off. SO, we keep her tethered anytime we're out and about. I love these boondocking sites! I hope to convince Mike to try it SOON!!!

    • @Weretherussos

    Thanks for the videos, they are a great alternative to TV. An issue I feel is worth mentioning is the difficulty of disposing of the used oil if you do it yourself.

    • @earltowery1021
      @earltowery1021 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was referring to disposing of the contents of the drip pan. That is why I no longer change the oil myself. It isn't easy finding a place that will take it when I am at home and would be even more difficult when traveling.

    One big advantage to going to a dealer for your oil change is that there is a record of it on the dealer's computer. Just in case you have a future warranty claim and they try to weasel out of it by stating you did not maintain the vehicle.

    Your Husky and our Shih Tzu are similar in the fact ours will wander too plus has little recall if he gets into a good scent hunt. Even at the end of your video our dog does a similar thing going crazy and running around then just crashing. Good info on the comparison between the two vans. I always knew the Sprinter was more expensive for oil changes but that's ridiculous!
    Take care!

    I just did the oil change in my 2.7L, 5cyl Sprinter a few days ago. The intimidation of the overly complicated Mercedes Benz vehicle is overcomeable.
    Go to any WalMart and buy two 5-quart jugs of Euro Spec 0W-40 Mobil1 for $22.88 each, buy any needed filters from RockAuto.com for cheap (but still usually better quality), and for $75, you're on your way. Recycle the oil at ANY big box auto parts place, the oil drain plug is an easy 1/2"/13mm bolt, and the clearance to drain the oil underneath the engine is HUGE. THE MOST difficult part is resetting the service alert on the dash. Even the fuel filter is an easy maintenance item for someone with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers.
    Yes, the oil is just fine for these Sprinters, especially in colder climates. And it has the correct MB certification.
    Yes, it's the right amount since its spec'ed at 10 liters of oil- 9.74Qts.
    Yes, if you have the right pliers, you can use the rubber coated handles to start the filter off and the jaws to get the oil plug off, with the same tool.

    $350 for Sprinter oil change was one reason I stopped looking for a sprinter. Met a guy who had a U-joint go bad on his 12 year old Sprinter and they only offered to sell him $1,400 drive shaft that he wanted to install. Can you imagine the cost for parts and labor for a drive shaft installed by a dealer due to bad U-joint. I decided on a Chevy Express g3500 box truck. 22 feet bumper to bumper with 12 x 6 x 6 fiberglass reinforced plywood box with full width barn doors. 2013 High mileage like new (most options) with 6L. $11,900 plus tax.

    They have Mexican Wolves in that forest. That was most likely the howling you heard at night. The wolves prey on coyotes, so they tend to be at lower elevations. We had an encounter with a pack of Mexican wolves in tonto national forest while boondocking. They came into camp as we had small dogs with us...

    Sprinter is now 20,000 miles between oil changes. But, it is still expensive. But, I am getting 20.1 MPG in my conversion.

    What a really wonderful lifestyle. I am also amazed how much the countryside varies from one part of the US to another. I am thoroughly enjoying our videos. BTW - does the passenger seat in the van not have armrests?

    I saw the stop off at the YMCA. Looked like a great break. Do you buy an annual pass for all YMCA's everywhere, or do you look for a different gym in the various places that you visit?

    I so love Leo and want a pet when I RV-RN....I just know I can’t leave a dog alone more than a few hours and especially not a 12 hour shift. Any suggestions? Great vlog and every Wednesday is too long to wait for you all. No pressure, enjoy....from Houston Texas

      A guinea pig or rabbit might be a good RV pet for you! Or maybe some cats that could keep each other company! You would have to make sure the temperature is regulated well, especially if you're in Texas!

    • @knit1purl1
      @knit1purl1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wondered about the temperature too with a pet and those long shifts. I know, I've worked them. You could consider that as a time for adventure, not tied down and when you are through with travel nursing, settle down and get pets.

      I believe this gets answered in a future video that I've already seen. Joe has a Planet Fitness membership that is good nationwide and allows him to bring a guest.

Reason I ask is because my 3 year old watches some TH-cam videos of children playing with their disneys frozen dolls and they use a very similar tune if not the very same one. As I was watching this video, she stopped what she was doing and said "daddy, what u watching?" Lol

    MB Oil changes cost so much. As they require 3 times the amount of oil. At $35.00 for a 1 gallon jug. As they take 13 QTs. That is $115.00 just for oil. The filter is $30.00 for a high quality one.
    Servicing one is not easy as well. So labor is around $70.00-$150.00 based on hour rate they charge. Which an MB dealer $120.00 an hr. Standard shop. $75.00 an hour..So expect 1.5-2.0 hr labor charge...As they include State\Federal disposal fees. ie hidden tax for the government share!

    That is a correct cost on a Benz, as I own a MB C300 and do you spend on maintenance, but it is once a year not every 3 months or every 3000 miles. Hope that helps.

      Not to mention, in Europe after pushing diesel, now they want to fine people with it and end it's use in the future. Now diesel is in the same category as asbestos and mustard gas.

    There is a lot more to deciding between a Sprinter or a ProMaster (or a Transit for that matter) than oil change costs though. The Sprinters can tow more than the ProMaster and get better mileage, but also cost a LOT more for the chassis than a Transit or ProMaster. The ProMaster is FWD, vs. RWD for the Sprinter and Transit, etc.

  • @Alaskadirtfishing

    Its nice to do your own Maintenance but on the road you have to find a place to get rid of old oil might be hard and possible expensive in some citys. Jus my 2 cents worth.

  • @Toluca47
    @Toluca47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a 2017 Roadtrek CS Adv. XL on a 2016 Sprinter chassis. The regular service is every 20,000 miles, and includes a lot more than an oil change. It was about what you said the Mercedes dealer quoted you; so I think that was the price for the complete 20,000 mile service. And, they only use synthetic oil on the Sprinters. I'm not sure if the oil change you got included synthetic oil; but I doubt it. Is your Hymer a diesel? Diesel engines hold a lot more than gas engines.

    • @wadekehler
      @wadekehler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One other factor to consider is that the diesel Sprinter will achieve 24MPG (US). I don't believe that the RAM will be quite as close to that. That is part of the trade-off between gas and diesel. Pros and cons to each.
