- It was calling for a winter storm with freezing temperatures so I decided to put the 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter to the test and sleep in it overnight.
Here is Links to some of the van builds I mention in the video:
Bed Build:
• DIY Sprinter Van Bed-C...
Kitchen Island
• Sprinter Vanlife Modul...
Insulated window coverings
• DIY: How To Make Insul...
Those heaters are great and you don't need extra ventilation. I'm a trucker and have spent many a night with the heater blasting all night in the bunk, toasty as can be.
How much diesel fuel does that take to run for say 10 hours? Diesel is so expensive up here in Michigan, I can't imagine. Sometimes I think it's cheaper just to stay at a Motel 6.
@@northstarsmith6798 Should use one gallon. Maybe even less actually but should use no more than one gallon and the heat is HOT.
your truck bunk roof and walls are heavily insulated. sprinter is not.
@@andrewfung9614 No they aren't. Only way they are insulated are if you do it yourself. There is sound dampening but that is it.
I’ve done it once for two nights on a move to cold lake Alberta in a rig,fun for sure -49 with windchill that weekend
It’s not a big deal. Proper insulation and a diesel heater (the Chinese diesel heater) will get you through the harshest weather. Living in my van for 2 years now. No sweat.
Do you make many snow cones in winter ?
Right. I did 20 months in a stock 4runner. No sweat.
@@cyanidechrist so you cool then?
I lived in My camper for över two years. Are lot of things to heat it up during winterstorms.
Those cheap chinese heaters aren't safe enough for me to sleep in same place where I sleep. Those burners arent tight and can cause and those fumes prob leak. Also wiring isnot heat resistant and fire insulate has asbest in it. Yep :)
Buy somw guality heaters, they can save your life and van. Like Wallas, Drumatic, Webasto.. i recommend guality made in Finland heater Wallas
This makes me wanna do vanlife even faster than I am planning...so cool !!!
That must have been terrifying for you ! Surviving all night in a heated Mercedes with warm food , beer , and a soft bed ! You’re a true survivalist!
Nothing else 2 say buddy
😂😂
Was gonna say the title should say. Living comfortably in a storm
Just a bunch of keyboard warriors sitting in their fat a$$ moms house hating wishing they had the money to buy a van and do the same thing
You bet it is! He lives like an animal! He needs to go potty Al he takes it in a plastic bag and throws it in a garbage can!! You’re not a dog man!! You drive a Mercedes!! There should be no human waste in a garbage can!
Just a heads up, that 2nd carbon monoxide alarm should be lower than where you sleep. That gas is heavier than air so if god forbid the first detector failed by the time the 2nd one went off it might be too late. Really, you could put them right next to each other.
Nice build by the way. Safe travels,
Jay
Thanks you! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Co has a specific gravity of less than one. So it floats.
You need a Low Oxygen sensor... You're welcome.
@@godofplumbing Wrong, CO2 is 53% denser than air, so it's heavier. So stop saying stupid things that could kill people...
@@DiabloOutdoors he didn’t say Co2 he said Co
I’ve been doing Vanlife for five years, but I am really impressed with your set up. You obviously did your homework!!
Thank you!! Yes many sleepless nights thinking about how I would build the van to fit my needs
I like when he woke up and said....I'm still alive 🤣🤣
LOL..YEA HAD ME IN CHUCKLES
Yeah like a month before he got raped at that same spot or something luke that they said
He had already woken up to swith Camera on ?
Yeah. Super lame.
Never imagined anyone saying "I'm still alive" after spending a night in Bradford Ontario 😂😂. It's one of the top 10 safest cities in Canada
Shin Ramen... yum. Prefect for a cold winter night.
You can wrap your water lines with 12 volt thermal tape...They will not freeze then...
But making things modular is great idea. You can adjust things to use and your needs...
I been living the van life In Colorado for 6 years and it's a unexplainable freedom.
Merica. Not many countries where half the people live by a river in a van and make money off TH-cam! 🤭
I love this van it looks so cosy and it’s the first van I ever drove my dad had one and we would travel a lot , Ireland to Germany was the furthest I went with him. We weren’t living in the van but it was huge there was so much room in the back so a couple of us could sleep at the same time while dad drove. Great times ❤. I’m watching van life videos a whole lot lately, the idea is appealing to me more and more. The toilet situation is off putting unless I were to find a van with a wee shower and toilet. The sleeping situation makes me feel it would be totally worth it. Thanks for sharing ❤
I used to sleep in a 1990 YJ soft top Jeep at that temperature on snowboard trips. Cold AF! No heater but i did make a sleeping platform out of a sheet of plywood so i could stretch out diagonally. After a few failed attempts (eg. freeeeezing nights) i figured out the recipe was to soak in the nearby hot springs, change into full thermals/puffer jacket/socks/beanie, etc eat hot food then get into my sleeping bag and try to pass out before my body temp dropped too much. Definitely not for the faint hearted but so glad I experienced it 🤙 I would have killed for your Sprinter! Glad to see you making the most of it.
If you want to retain heat, reflective side of the windshield cover to inside may help slightly. Opposite on a hot summer day.
Yes! Here in Brazil at the south they sell windshield covers and to all glasses van to use due to the snow. It maintain a lot of heat inside and we cannot use heaters. Here in south at winter we have temperatures at -11C and we dont have winter diesel, so if we need to turn engine on at night we will have problems.
@@JD-zc8pu why don't you have winter diesel?
My husband is a roofer and he has this jacket from Gobi apparel i believe its warm brings two batteries lasts him all day in the roof without having to charge bat i think u could really benefit from it for sleep . Wont have to have any heaters on or waste no power keep the batteries charged put it on in the night and u good to go . He says its the best invested he ever made
Not sure it's safe or not? Apple and Samsung spend tons of money for research but still their batteries catch fires and blast sometimes. I would still afraid to keep batteries near my chest.
I lived like this for a year and I kinda miss van life it was super comfortable and straight forward
Where did you shower or how often? Bathroom situation?
@@stonecold293851 gyms! Get a all club goodlife pass and you’re good. They are usually open 24/7 and cleaned daily.
The van looks so aggressive is dope 😮💨
Dude, you got me looking at random vans when I drive now. Great content!
Lol thx!
You ain't lying I dream of this LMAO.... I want a box truck though much more room.
I love the narrative of the video. Thanks.
Can I just say I am in love with this van. Everything about it. I live in a 3 bedroom 5th Wheel, thought it would be easier to have to move around for my job. Bought it last year and breaking in the "new". And I am not happy. I went way too big and cumbersome. So now looking to sale it and go down to a couple of Vans. Maybe a little more room. Love the color, build, and tires...just everything. Thanks for sharing.
3 bedroom 5th wheel wow!? Now that’s a house on wheels!! That’s one thing I like about the van and also mine not being the long wheelbase I can get in just about anywhere except a underground parking lot. And it only takes up 1 parking spot. Thanks for watching and the comment hope everything works out :)
The subs are stupid and a waste of space
3 bedroom 5th wheel? What are you pulling that with?
@@stonedog23 Prayers lol. Nothing yet.
@@stonedog23 My friend pulls his with a semi. Was thinking of doing the same.
Homemade Ramen on a cold ass night for the win! Stay safe and keep your head on a swivel. Much respect and God Bless...
The Best TIRES on A Van I’ve Ever Seen 🔥🔥🔥
Your set up is great! You’ve got everything you need, microwave, fridge freezer, cook top. Nice swivel passenger seat. ‘A quick get get away’? I can only imagine how often that happens. What a hassle. Keep it up, man. Stay safe out there!
You might not need to leave that much open at night while you sleep, but it’s a good idea to leave something open to allow the humidity to escape. Trust me on this one. I lived two Canadian winters full time in my 19ft trailer.
Thank you for this!
Yes, that is a secret I have long known too - let that humidity escape and you'll stay warmer.
Nice setup. Only thing I might change is to extend the exhaust pipe so it is sticking completely out from under the van. That way you don't have to worry so much about the fumes building up under the van and finding their way inside. Personally, I have my exhaust similar to yours. However, I have an extender I put on it whenever I use it. Only takes a few seconds to slide it on or off.
Genius idea!
Great idea!!!!@
I'd add another idea, you know how bridges freeze up before the roads because the air blows in under them. Make some side skirt panels that you can remove and keep in storage, and pull out and attach when parked for the night. Keep the wind from just blowing in underneath the vehicle. I could make a real difference in how hard your heater has to work to keep the vehicle warm.
@@piperp9535 or an air suspension like the low riders have.
@@beastman.330 Yup, and a few spongy strips of some material to throw underneath before you drop it low, makes a seal. Could be inflatable, add a compressor, always good to have anyway.
I love the narrative of the video. Thanks.))))))))))
WOW !
Amazing, simply amazing!
I could live on it worry free !
Stay safe , God bless !!!
Intro was 🔥 but the streets was ❄️
During winter the vents in the dash are enough for me. Keeps snow and noise out. As you might be concerned to get fumes of the heater into the van: the air intake is located on the driverside of the hood. So no worries, but with a co2 warner, you sleep better.
Yup.

This is easy to do when is just only one person. Adventuring with a family is quite a different story. It is a lovely Benz.
Perfect setup sweet looking van from the outside too...
This is so dope and he’s got 2 12s smack in the middle. I love it
Man, looks like getting some side window deflectors would help. I've got them on my vehicle and you could leave both windows cracked in any weather and stay dry inside.
Sleeping in multiple hoodies and a full tracksuit and a beanie when you have a $1500 Espar diesel heater is insane. Hopefully you get that dialed in, there should be 0 struggle with a heater of that caliber. Cheers bro! Cool seeing someone different in this van life community, keep doing your thing, love the sprinter.
Peace young brother, I just started following u and like ur channel, especially it’s nice that u explain and show different aspects of ur van , people really like that 🙏🏽 stay well and remain safe.
I have documented my entire build on my channel. Blast off soon. Definitely a 1 of a kind.
I thought the same thing and also a new sub here
@@tombreault1096 😎👍
Wow 👏 pretty cool looks like a small portable studio apartment
I looked it up and that S2 heater only uses 0.28 L/Hour of fuel, which is amazing considering what it can do (keep you alive lol)
Pretty cool man. I do a lot of sleeping outside. I’m a wildland firefighter in California. We travel a lot and go to cold places at high elevation. Sleeping in a sleeping bag is warmer when your just wearing boxers. It’s freezing getting in but your body heat warms the bag the more cloths you wear the colder you get. Down or synthetic. I wish I could afford a 4x4 van Some day.
Yeah, you were really hanging by a thread there. What a thriller... Glad you made it out alive.
That's a cool set up. Yea, leaving the window cracked open might not be a good idea. You don't want the snow to melt and water going down and shorting out stuff
Then how do you get fresh air in. Aren't heaters dangerous?
Your van is SWEET!
Person has it figured out. I am impressed with his abilities.
Wow. Nice and well thought out van. Safe travels
-5 degrees celsius in a confortable car are nothing. Me and my only 12 years old son slept outside in bivouac (due to a snow tempest) without any shelter, just layed on the snow, on a mattress with down goose sleeping bag in Vercors mountains (French Alps) under 80km/h (50mph) wind and -9 degree celsius, and we did 4 nights trekking with snow shoes 6 hours a day in full food autonomy, and you have to make every day your water boiling ice or snow. Our mountaineer-climber sleeping bag (Alaska-cumulus brand) are confortable until -20 degrees celsius.
Bend your exhaust so the output is out the side of the van. It is safer that way as the fumes are not under the van like you have it now. Second with it pointing forward like you have it it will get a lot of road grim and mud in it, potentially clogging it and causing issues with the heater running. Also when it is under the van it is hard to see if it is clogged by ice or mud, mine gets a lot of gunk on it. Finally it will be a little less noisy pointing away from the van. My heater is very quiet, the loudest part is the exhaust so I try not to park with anyone on that side.
The exhaust is pointing from front to rear… I get your point and will direct it more away from the van. Thanks for the input!
Do you ever sleep in your van with the heater on and window rolled up all the way or do you crack a window like how I did ?
@@hustlelife369 When I am sleeping with the furnace on I keep the windows and the roof vent closed. If installed correctly the furnace pulls in combustion air from the outside and exhausts the fumes outside as well making it perfectly safe.
I do have, and strongly recommend, a smoke and co2 detector in the van. It should be battery operated with its own battery and not tied into the house electric system.
I open the roof vent and a window when cooking. I will also open the roof vent in the morning for a while to dry the van out from any built up moisture.
@@whiteturtleadventuresandphoto Thanks for sharing! I will try this… I also have 2 battery operated Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors just in case one fails.
Love Princess Auto.
I keep a luggable loo also.
Brilliant!
I never met a guy so organized 💪😎
STOP DATING SCUM BAGS THEN, PLENTY OF ORGANIZED MEN OUT THERE , INCLUDING MYSELF

Slick job , well done on power and heat
You did a great job, well thought out and about the mistakes that you made, hey learn from them as you did and apply the lesson...again, great job.
Good simple setup, what you need is there. No need for fansy schmansy bs. . Stay warm, stay safe buddy😊

That Shin ramen is 10/10 you have great taste my friend! Best of luck on your endeavors, God bless you and your family!
Nice rig. Well set up and useful.
I dig your "Eat, Sleep, Garden" mug!
Looks very cozy…
Really nice cozy set up thank you for sharing 👍👍
Nice rig! Just sold my 2014 and started on a bus until prices get back down on the sprinters. The 4x4 low roof is an awesome option imo. Primarily use Instagram but you gained a sub!
You have a nice setup..Makes camping in you van more comfortable..Safe travels..
That van is rent worthy... looks so cozy, equipped and secure during harsh winters!
Very nice.
Hello My Friend,
Thank you so much for your prompt response. I really appreciate it. Best regards,
You should use moving blankets on the outside to cover your windows at night to keep the heat inside. If the outside glass gets cold than your van will get cold because that same glass is also inside the van
Never thought of that. Great idea.
If I where you when warm weather comes I would strip the interior and line the walls ceiling and floor with Reflective Insulation recommendation foil double bubble foil you can get it at insulation 4 less. Won’t regret it. Summer heat protection and Winter freeze protection and Amazing Heat retention. 🤟🏻🇺🇸 PS it Glue’s well with some 3M High Strength spray glue.
Glad you survived and learned you can actually stay warmer by not leaving windows open with that heater.
Nice build!
Nice Rolly. Thanks for sharing the video.
Amazing to see that when you started to seal the van and heat going you look so comfortable in tshirt and your slippers. Must be an island man.
You won’t find a man from the Philippines at home without his slippers on lol
I'm only like 2min in and I can say that's a nice ride/home. Nice ground clearance and all terrain tires....sweeeet. Guess I better watch rhe rest
that van is beautiful!
Van lifer here .This video is the reason I stay mostly in Florida. Peace
I hear you would love to be in Florida right now
Pretty amazing 👏 van. Great 👍 for living in it part time ⏲️.
Good advice Bro. When you're going to the bed never wear that much clothes. It's doesn't help you warm your body up👍 I've been tested both clothed+unclothed. All what I can say - t-shirt and underwear 🩳 is enough. Your body warm you up under a duvet
I knew I’ll never be able to try this. I do knock it’s not easy, but I find it interesting. I wish I could, but maybe fall or spring
This looks Soo cozy nothing like living 3 years in a 4 door sedan in the winter
Really enjoyed your video. That van looks so comfortable where you were chilling in the back.
Wow these video qualities deserve way more exposure tbh. better than lots of big camping youtubers.
Oooh Jeezy jeez a Mercedes-Benz on the winters.
This life so hard.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience in a winter storm ⛈
. vans are very cold ,what about a generator hitched to a mini trailer,,,, or a rack with a box to house fixed on the back doors bet you could run an extension from the frame . .if insulated either way for noise, saying that they are quiet , you couild then have an electric heater . you could even have your. gen ...with a chain on it next to the van housed in a insulted wood box, then fold up box bring gen in when your on your way
Nice van set up. 👌 I love the diesel heater set ups. I have one in my Sprinter, but it doesn't get as cold here in Australia.
Great Toilet!
Very nice set up and a cool video explaining everything. Hope to see more from you .
That kodiak is nice!
I love your van! I have a 2005 E350 Skooly..NO 4x4. 😞 but I want to see if I can install it myself. Awesome video. And you're correct about not needing to keep windows open with the diesel heater. As long as it exhausts properly, you're good to go. Your friend from NYC 🙏
i like that you have it all in the smaller sprinter. not high top. or 172 in. this is the way to go. nice. : )
I support this lifestyle! It’s also funny going from watching a person cook a meal in a tight space to a person who can stand in their vehicle lol
2 years ago i lived in my van until febuary in canada. hit -27 celcius one night. i installed a wood burning stove in there but it was still rough times
I would of put up a heavy curtain blocking off the cab as well. If you do this often maybe look into one of the mini fireplaces made for tiny living
Agreed. One thing, I'm not a grammar police but I've had enough reading, "would of," it should be, "would have." Not sure where, when and how that started, it is now becoming common.
Yes… I do just that and it makes alllll the difference!
@@jev2867 People don’t realize that “would of” is a contraction of “would have”. Need to learn correct grammar.
van looks like a beast from the outside bro
Really stealthy!
You know how to eat in cold weather!!! Love that ramen!!
Nice van nice video the noise of the heater would bother me though. I think about pointing the exhaust at the oil pan to preheat the engine try to capture as much energy as possible.
Thanks.. I had the window cracked open and the fan going so it was pulling in a lot of fresh air and it was really cold out so the heater fan was on high to keep up. Next time I’m going to try sleeping with the windows up. When the heater fan is on low you barely hear it… as for the exhaust pointing to the oil pad not sure if CO2 could somehow get into the van
@@hustlelife369 I wouldn't trust it either & I'm not so sure it would help alot anyway. Sprinters have 10 quarts of oil unlike a car with half that or less. A magnet type heater could be added to pan & plugged into a inverter with a switch. That would be alot safer but in reality these heaters started to help get diesels started 30 years ago when it was a problem. Rail systems avoid that trouble now & diesels start in the cold now. I definitely allow mine to warm up longer but they don't need heaters today. I love the idea tho & love hearing brains think. Safety 1st tho & especially when you're sleeping.
😎👍
Just a suggestion but I would use an electric blanket or a large heating pad to use for extra warmth.
If you do want to leave a window cracked open and not get wet, you should get AVS window visors.
Very nice, looks warm and comfortable.
Nice van design
I loved those heaters when I drove a truck. I wake up in single digit temps under just a sheet in my underwear toasty warm
It's pretty relaxing to watching you, well made video :).
Please be safe!
Nice.....I'm sleeping in my skoolie right now....4 days a week in MN....I have a chinese diesel heater that kept me warm all MN winter.....
