My interpretation is that he feels a massive amount of motivation is required for him to compete at all. I feel that if he doesn't believe he is in good enough shape to be a top athlete he won't even turn up for the race. After all nobody can accuse him of underperforming in a race that he isn't attending.
Kerley only needs to make the 100 meter Olympics and compete there. Tebojo is young and killing it. He will compete in multiple events in the Olympics and may win the 100 and 200. The 200 should be the best competition ever.

It literally doesn't get more versatile than that. & there's def no athlete that has ever medaled in all THREE events 1 lap and under at Worlds & Games. The field might be too deep in the 100m. Leading up to his title run in the 100m in 2021, he was under 10 on 4 separate occasions leading up to US Nats. He hasn't done it once thus far even with a near illegal wind and not run the 100m since april. Even in his silver medal at the games in 2021 for the 100m he was under 10s twice by this point in the season. I think he'll do the responsible thing & consolidate his efforts at Trials. All his talks of the 100m is to hype his presence for his 200m push. Which i agree deviates from his normal behavior as he's a bit more on the quiet side in media, but I don't hate it. If anyone is allowed to gas up, it's Fred. Statistically speaking, he's is arguably the most well rounded decorated sprinter of the modern spike era (arbitrary time period I use started by Juantorena's thrashing of the field at the 76 Games with his custom, removable spikes when times steadily started dropping). Using World Athletics, his PBs across the 100m, 200m, and 400m earn world scores a combined 3,825pts. which is higher than Michael Johnson, Wade, and Michael Norman across the 3 events. The latter being the best potential to usurp that title given his age (dude is only 26 blows my mind). This idea is contingent upon "well rounded" being a blend of all 3 short sprints granted & it feels significant. IMO his legacy is concrete. BUT he does lack hardware at what some argue (including myself) is the most pure sprinting event available. That would be undeniably great if he accomplished this.
