    Movies like this do make me wish we made a few more creature movies like the Ghost and the Darkness, where the monster isn't really magic or mystic, but still dangerous and hyper aggressive. There are quite a few stories out there of animals acting genuinely terrifying and attacking people that would make for fun movies.

    Nice to know you're into shark horror films too, Klayton! I've seen all the Jaws films (Jaws 2 in underrated imo), Shark Attack 3 Megalodon, Deep Blue Sea, The Meg, and some Sci-Fi channel films (they're a huge guilty pleasure). Can't wait to see The Meg 2.

    Need more killer shark films like this. Mid-budget creature features focused on a character, single location and single creature but with the production budget to make it awesome. Plus a solid workman director who brought you House of Wax (2005), Orphan, Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, The Commuter, Jungle Cruise and Black Adam

    Honestly, I find the reef from 2010 more terrifying since they used footage of real sharks in that movie, and because most of the movie was filmed in "head" level above the ocean.

    This is Jaws for the 2010's. And the shark even has motivation to HATE humans and want to cause them harm- re. fish hook which probably causes it no shortage of pain, which helps us explain its animosity towards humans, beyond mere territoriality. Great tension, suspense, elements of horror. The beautiful but deserted location which adds to Blake's isolation and increasing sense of desperation, yet she never gives up despite how hopeless the situation seemed. Taut, suspenseful, nerve-wracking leading to an ultimately satisfying conclusion. Sia's song and the beautiful end credits visuals was the icing on the cake. Great movie all around.

    I watched the film when it first came out on DVD (didn't get the chance to see it in theaters) with my mother and both of us were quite surprised with how much we enjoyed the film. We were expecting another dumb shark movie where we root for the shark to eat everybody but it did a complete 180 and now it's one of my personal favorite animal attack movies ever. Granted it doesn't have that much competition since both me and my mother pretty much watched a bunch of those type of movies that range from mediocre to terrible with only a few gems in there when I was little but it really was a great film. I hope it gets more recognition, honestly deserves it.

    I just have one problem with The Shallows. Blake Lively’s character is much, much smaller than the dead whale yet the shark goes after her and the people and just ignores a free meal. I never understood why the shark would not go after something that did not require a lot of energy.

    • @shinigamiinochi
      @shinigamiinochi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it isn't trying to eat her, it's being territorial towards it's food. That's why it bites that guy that tries to steal her stuff in half, but doesn't eat him. It's also noted that it was attacked by humans before (the metal pole stuck in it's mouth), so it makes sense it would be aggressive

    Another really great Shark movie is the film “The Reef” it is a true story about a group of Australians that go out to the Great Barrier Reef and get stranded out at sea and their only option is to swim to an island nearby. Only problem is a great white shark stalks their ever move and kills them off one by one. The story is great, the tension is palpable and they actually use real Great White Footage in the movie not CGI. Easily my fav shark movie Hands down.

    I would add "The Reef" to this list of "good shark movies", an Australian flick; that being said, I agree with your final comments: "less money and 'out there' scripts, with sympathetic characters".... I think when they get too much $$$, a director can go wild, and not be as careful and precise about TELLING A STORY. ALSO, having characters who are not total turn offs (unless that is the POINT) makes for a miserable viewing experience.

    • @ChillDfect
      @ChillDfect 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the most common reason for so many huge-budget movies being awful is not the director; it's corporate execs interfering with the creative process, especially with so much money on the line. The more dollars at stake, the more cooks there are to spoil the broth. Bean-counters with no business making creative decisions, preventing their own filmmakers from doing their jobs well.
      Big studios notoriously ambush their own productions with last-minute demands for huge script changes, hobbling the filmmakers' ability to work. They demand massive re-shoots, putting filmmakers in untenable positions under crushing deadlines. They look for every opportunity to insert product placements, endorsements and script changes for the mere purpose of promoting other sources of revenue in unrelated areas. They hire and fire directors and other important figures mid-production. Productions often get canceled or shelved for no other reason than a change in management. The production companies exercise overwhelming aversion to originality, preferring to clone past successes ad nauseam until wearied audiences finally stop buying tickets, and blaming "consumers" when that happens. In the big-budget world, originality is for amateurs, and when some independent production does succeed against the odds, the big players can just swoop in to co-opt it. They look to market research instead of to their own experts. Like a hamburger chain, they put more emphasis on a good poster than a good product... and at the box office, there are no refunds. These guys don't care about visionary directors or talented actors; they want obedient, replaceable cogs. They would prefer to have AI writing their screenplays, and CGI clones replacing their actors (hence the writers' and actors' strikes of 2023). These are the kind of people who tried to cast Julia Roberts as Harriet Tubman (true story)!!! The kind of people responsible for that awful ending to the original Nightmare on Elm Street (with Nancy's mother being pulled through the front door window); that wasn't Wes Craven's idea, that stupidity was demanded by corporate execs wanting to ensure sequels. Such nitwits would gladly feed audiences an exclusive diet of sequels, reboots and reality shows, seeming to think they can just clone legendary hits like The Shining and Ghostbusters, but without the massively talented cast and crew that made those movies great. They even demand weird changes to movies in order to appease Chinese Communist Party censors, such as erasing the Taiwanese flag, and wiping Black actors from movie posters.
      This is why revered cinema titans like Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Jeunet & Caro and Eddie Murphy are now making movies for Netflix instead of for Hollywood, because the big Hollywood studios won't have anything to do with them. The big studios would rather keep churning out lackluster Marvel movies year-after-year until audiences can no longer remember why we liked Marvel movies in the first place.
      This is the same logic behind why MTV ("music" television) no longer has music, and why the History Channel and Discovery Channel are now good for little more than Ancient Aliens and COPS reruns. Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money. The number of potentially-good productions ruined or even permanently shelved by executive interference is all-but too high to count.
      In all fairness, the counter-argument does carry weight: that creative projects can't exist at all without someone footing the bill. The studios probably still haven't forgotten what happened with Heaven's Gate, the over-budget flop that bankrupted United Artists in 1980.
      It takes a special kind of producer to get a great movie made, one with both the artistic sensibility to recognize greatness and the executive power to bring it to fruition. Sadly it seems apparent that such individuals are painfully rare.

    i got 2 big problems that really ruin the movie for me.
    1: shark goes after human when there is a whale right there. nope, makes no sense. he is going after her to keep her from the whale? no. great whites are possessive of a whale meal, but it knows she is not a shark and no threat to its meal. keep in mind that real great whites have been filmed by divers while they fed on a whale, and pretty up close too.
    2: not only did it spend stupid amounts of energy trying to chase the human down towards the bottom of the ocean, this shark clearly had no knowledge about the existence of the bottom of the ocean, as demonstrated by the fact that it charged itself full speed into the spikes. ''but it did not know about the spikes'' you might say. ofcourse, but that does not change the fact even without those spikes, it would do a substantial amount of damage to itself from just ramming into the ocean floor at that speed.
    and yes, it is just a movie and there are others that make sharks even less real. but the fact it got so much right, and it was not trying to be another killer shark movie, makes it worse that it got 2 crucial things involving the shark so wrong.

  • @NathanielTavington
    @NathanielTavington ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Shallows was ok. I prefer Deep Blue Sea because it has a viable plot reason for why the sharks act so outside of their nature. The shark in Shallows **looks** really great, the VFX artists did their homework on movement and appearance, but it doesn't **act** like a real shark, and there's no viable reason for it. There is no way in real life that a shark would abandon a whale carcass and pursue a human to the point of injuring itself, humans do not have the nutritional values that a shark needs, and I feel like it doesn't have the same excuses that Jaws had, in 2016 we knew a lot more about how sharks act and the reasons behind it than we did in 1975. But I will agree, taken with as much a grain of salt as The Meg (or a tablespoon), it's an enjoyable film, and Blake Lively is always a treat to watch perform. On that note, I also very much enjoyed The Meg, and would put it up there with Deep Blue Sea on my list of favorite shark films.

  • @girlbuu9403
    @girlbuu9403 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It was okay. You aren't kidding about goofy dialogue though. I think what annoys me about shark movies is when they get one thing right they often get another thing VERY wrong. The shark in Jaws is less aggressive than this thing. Like it REALLY wants to fucking eat her. The lengths it is going to to try and snag her are almost comical, it only seems more grounded because other shark movies do even more over the top things.
    I liked the idea of Open Water (2003) and the shark does behave like a shark in that movie, but the dialogue is atrocious in that movie. They have one of the most nightmarish scenarios imaginable and the characters are acting so nonchalant about the situation they are in that it is unbearable.
    "did you just pee" "hey you said you were cold" "you are so, like, totally gross"
    "was that a shark" "might have been a dolphin" "if it was a dolphin you'd be swimming over there to play with it"
    YOU ARE STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN NO HE WOULDN'T WHAT IS THIS?!
    Another nightmare scenario is 47 Meters Down (2017) but they screw that one up too, if not as badly.
    Honestly yea. By proxy The Shallows is great compared to the vast majority of shark movies.

    All I know of this movie is how scientists/animal enthusiasts have beef with why the shark is waiting for her so long when it has no reason to fixate on her for a meal, and how humans are not worth the energy especially if they aren't in swimming distance so most sharks would already know this and outside of an exploratory bite or one done by mistake they wouldn't bother.
    It is a different story when there's a whole crew of humans in the water though, I think that incident was well documented in WWII sinkings in which case its like finding a bunch of nuggets instead of just one and needing to work for it

    My man does not have to after Jaws 2 like that

    But the ending ruined it for me. Really “jumped the shark” (pun intended). The shark’s final scene is totally at odds with the gritty survival “realistic” tone of the rest of the film. Otherwise, I loved it.

    The Shallows was really good. Honestly a breath of fresh air when it comes to shark films of recent years. In my opinion though i think Red Water is really underrated, not perfect but the premise was really cool a Bull shark swiming up river into a lake causing terror. Not to mention Coolio as a antagonist.

    I have an unpopular opinion with "The Shallows." I mean the acting is naturally superb, the great white in this movie is one of the most realistic animal special effects I've ever seen in a movie, the music score is stimulating, some of the direction is solid, and the cinematography is wonderful, but that's just it. As a character, Nancy (Blake Lively) is a so-so character for my taste, especially for when it comes to zoology, the depiction of the great white's behavior towards humans is false, there are some shark inaccuracies here and there, and the tone of the movie is uneven at times. Not Recommeneded to anyone. Watch "The Meg" instead; definitive example of a monster movie about a shark done right.

    Loving Jaws & Deep Blue Sea, I decided to check this Shark Movie out early this year and Boy did i Have a Blast with this One. We really need more shark Movies like this. I really felt the Suspense and realistic performance from Blake Lively. She was a great actress and gave it her all in this underrated shark film. I Plan on buying this movie soon ^^.

    I love this movie and for me it's 2nd behind Jaws, If you haven't seen The Reef, then that is worth a watch, It's a low-budget one and the Shark looks good in it and it's also a different type of Shark movie, then the usual trash we see nowadays, Enjoy your uploads mate and subbed to your channel

    This is correct- if you make an animal attack movie, and don't make the animal in question do outlandish things- nor create ridiculous situations in the movie- it will have way more suspense because it feels more real.
    While Jurassic park 1 may have had exceptional animal antagonists, they really didn't do that outlandish things for them to feel unrealistic enough. In the Jurassic world movies, they did, and it just feels stupid.

    The Shallows was a really good movie. It wasn't accurate at all, but it was still believable, which is a rare accomplishment for an animal attack film. A sequel was released this year or last. Has anyone seen it yet?
