It's a clash of the mother and wife instincts. One pushes her to seek protection while the other has her be the protector. If she trusted her husband to over rule her instincts he wouldn't have left
tbh if the son can lie about abuse he can lie about sexual abuse too or maybe even do something to his sister. You don't just wake up and accuse someone of bad things.

Asking someone to lose weight when you already knew they were overweight when you asked them to be maid of honor is unreasonable as well. These are things you should be outlined from the beginning. That you have these plans for the wedding and that you would like these things done. The only way dying hair IMO is reasonable is if it isn't the persons natural hair color and they didn't just have it done because dying hair too often will destroy your hair. You don't plan a wedding for months then suddenly ask for your maid of honor to change everything about themselves. If its outlined from the start then it gives the person you are asking a proper chance to decide if they want to be your maid of honor. I agree that losing weight isn't unreasonable if it was talked about from the start, because losing 20 lbs is a lot for most people and if you have months to do it instead of weeks it can actually be done in a healthy way rather than forcing someone to starve themselves for weeks.
Story 1) If the son took it upon himself to write out an apology letter early on, I feel like OP could work on the relationship. When it took this long, the apology seems forced.
Nope if the kid did it once they would do it again. Except it will be planned out far better because they would be older. There is absolutely no point in risking getting another accusation. What if he ropes his sister into saying OP sa'd her? What do you think would happen if they told a neighbor or teacher that?

I think it's more of the fact she one-sidedly believed her son, she didn't question the son's story further and just immediately believed op was guilty. While it's a good policy to trust the child in things like that, it has to be followed up with proper investigation. The fact there were immediate inconsistencies in the son's story (which she only started asking after op left with his daughter) are quite telling. What if the son lied about something more serious? Op could have lost his daughter while also having his life ruined over an allegation. Parents should trust their kids, while also keeping in mind that kids can lie and alter facts.

He told her he didn't do it, she wasn't listening. He left to cool his head, he wasn't planning on leaving her. Having it pointed out to him that this is a precarious situation, and the fact his wife was not going to hear him out at all, he decided the best thing to do was remove himself (and his daughter) from there. The fact that the wife started out sending hateful texts to him show that she was not interested in the truth. It was only when he stayed away that she began to question her son and found out he was lying. Regardless, a marriage can only last if there is mutual trust, and trust involving everyone there. The wife showed that she couldn't be trusted, immediately saying op was guilty. The son can't be trusted to not accuse him of something else. That marriage would have been everyone walking on eggshells with each other. Not exactly ideal. Separation was pretty much the best option. Could they have worked on it, maybe. But the fact that the mother seemed more than willing to give up her son just to keep op tells me that she has a few issues, and the marriage most likely wouldn't have lasted anyway.
