At first I was like "do you really need a display that wide when you walk that slowly" and then I saw it was made by Taito and everything made more sense
I wonder if the player slow walking speed while enemies rush was inspired by movies like Terminator or Robocop, where the cyborg slowly walks forward, unstoppable, and kills everyone at a deliberate pace.
That's almost certainly the case. The OST composer has said in interviews that the game was in part their take on that wave of 80s American "ninja" movies that were nothing like the Japanese understanding of ninja, and also represents a blending of traditional Japanese themes with modern technology. That latter portion was the direct creative basis of Daddy Mulk (the first/final stage theme), so what you describe would fit perfectly with that as well!
That last hallway always gets me. The enemy rush is bullshit! I never seem to get the timing for the big guy right while the mooks jump kick my ninja ass to oblivion. Thanks for some pro play to motivate me! Still has one of the best arcade endings of all time. I prefer the downbeat realistic atmosphere of the original over the remake, even if the remake is better in every other aspect.
There's a lot going for this version for sure. The fact that you move and walk like a death machine with a single objective, that you don't really 'stagger' when taking damage giving into that 'unstoppable machine', the battle damage elements that don't get repaired as you keep going stage after stage. It's very 'basic' for a beat-em-up sure, but it's one of the first few with a direct BLOCK function, more less it has a lot of style within it's limited presentation. Once/Again makes the combat far more fluid and less tedious, but I still love the thematic of the first for sure for these reasons.

looks hilarious how the enemies run toward you so fast to kill you while you just walking so calming.
