    Why all shoes are not shaped anatomically correct is beyond me. Pointy shoes ruin feet.

    I totally agree with your comments..I do a lot of mountain running and I love the stintson overall better but wish it has the speedgoat tread (especially for downhill mountain running grip). I used to run in speedgoats, but they're made seemingly cheaper now..the uppers on speedgoats cut into my feet too.. I agree with the sizing comments too

    I'm a LONG time Hoka user, and I agree with all of your comments ... except your finding fault in the design of the last on these two shoes. I agree that the Stinson has a wider forefoot and is more forgiving over the long haul. But I would say that the Speedgoat last was purposely designed narrower with a more performance-based, technical runner in mind. I own both and use them at different times for different needs.

    IMO, Toe boxes can and should differ among models of same brand to fit a larger variety of consumers.

      Thanks. I was going to respond similarly, but you said it. And, if you try the shoe in your home you should be able to figure out if it's too wide or too narrow and still be able to return it.

    Hey Chris, I was fortunate enough to find a wide version of the Speed Goat in my size 12. I loved them, they wore out faster than I thought they should. When it came time to replace I could not find the same shoe. Anyway, they were comfortable, and did a great job keep my feet under me.

      Nice, yea, wide is the move for sure. Next time will try them in wide, half size larger, think that will do the trick.

    I have been wearing various models of Altra shoes for 5 years and just got a pair of Stinsons. The toe box was the widest in the Hoka line. No other models fit. I could still use more width. The tread sucks on wet rock slabs, and I think that I just bought my first pair of street walking shoes 😒.
    A wider toe box and grabby tread would be a definite improvement. As it is, I had to upsize from a 12 D in Altra to a 13D in the Stinson.
    The lacing system also forces you to loosen to the toe and carefully tension the laces again before tying them.
    I am a 220 pound hiker, if that information helps anyone. I typically hike sections of the Appalachian Trail that are between 100 and 300 miles per trip.

    I wear the Bondi 7 in 9W, women's and 8.5 W men's. It's the only shoe that I've been able to slip into and immediately know It was perfect for my problem foot. On wet pavement, it can be slippery. I also wear Speedgoat, 9W, women's. It is just wide enough. I'm not sure how many miles I could hike in this shoe, because it isn't plush like the Bondi and I have bony feet. I want the Bondi with the Speedgoat lugs and thought Stinson would be the shoe Oddly enough, Hoka offers wides in Challenger and Speedgoat (balanced cushioning) but having only one plush trail running shoe, Stinson, you think they'd offer that in a wide. No. But thanks to your video, I can see that it does have a wider toe box. I might have to give it a try despite the less than stellar tread. It at least has to be better than my Bondis.
    Do You wear the same size in the Speedgoat 4 and the Stinson ATR6?

    My husband and I both have HOKA Torrent 2 Trail Runners. They are so comfortable and we love their sticky soles. Thanks for this review.

    Just came across this review, and perfect for what I'm looking at. have been running in Hoka Speedgoats for years (I always get the 2E wider shoe too), and have been looking at alternatives (Challengers initially) for lighter trails, especially after running road in the Hoka Bondis! omg, they are super comfortable.
    I'm going to order a set of Stinsons regular now, and give them a go. the wider toe box is a big win for me, especially as its still not an available option.
    Thanks for making this vid! 😎👍

    i have the speedgoat 4 and they are excellent but waay too narrow in the shoe box for any real long distance & although they have the wide it's almost impossible to buy here in the UK.. even from their own website?! i think they do better over here because the midsole doesn't flatten out so quickly like in the lone peaks

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, I wish I knew that the fit was so drastically narrow for the regular model. If I get another pair of HOKAs, I'll do the same, wide model, half a size up. That's if I can find them of course...

    Great information, my Hoka Mafetes did exactly the same to my nails - they ended up falling off! Shame they have to grow back!
    So, looking for new shoes, I've narrowed my search down to these two models, and your video contains all the information I need. I prefer the wider toebox as well, so the Stinsons look like they're the answer.
    Thank you👍

    The cushion in the Stinson is just great. I actually have them in the mid version, as a light hiking boot. Awesome. I also have the Speedgoat 4, love them, too.😎. Use them for terrain runs as well as casual daily walking around. They too have great cushion, I think, but not quite as the Stinson👍

    As a heavier runner Stinson all the way. I had to get used to the height tho, but it wasn’t an issue on a trail. Cush Cush Cush even hauling ass down hill as a 250lbs runner.

    Have burned through who-knows-how-many, including the one's you're featuring here. Altra Lone Peak "all weather" blows them away... FOR ME. As with ALL gear, fit is a personal, subjective issue. JMO. Thank you for the review I'm an avid viewer.

    Perhaps in goat 5 they fixed the toebox? Not that plushy but maybe worth checking it out.

    I just walked the 500 mile Camino in Altra LP. Love the grip but they were not nearly enough cushion for me. I have wide feet so I'm trying the Stinsons. Yes I wish they combined the cush of the Stinsons with the grip of the Speedgoat. Thanks for your review, I may now also try the wide Speedgoat.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, congrats on the Camino! And yea, the cushion on the HOKA shoes blows the LP away, but you def loose some trail feel. I'm back on the LP5s but I'm also not doing a 500 mile through hike. For long day hikes and short overnights, they seem to be a good balance.

    Since finding out about HOKA shoes from you, we purchased 2 pairs for my husband a few months ago and they have made a huge positive difference in his ability to go the distance .
    He loves his HOKA so much that he bought a pair for me today.
    Yaaay 🎉😊

    Thank you for your review. Knowing that the traction is not that great on wet rocks I am going to return my new Stinson unfortunately. I am not sure if I agree with you all that the Hoka shoes are that great for long hikes. I tried my new pair for just a short walk, but I already got sore and tiredness around my knee and lower legs area. I never had this issue with my Brooks Cascadia 16. Sad thing is that Cascadia 16 only offers one color in Wide and that was why I started to search for new trail running shoes because I wanted a new color added to my hiking life! Sadly I haven’t found a pair that offers the same stability, traction, and support as my Cascadia 16. Keep searching then I guess.

      Sorry to hear the HOKAs gave you that pain. The shoes are all a bit personal based on your body, walking style, etc. I know the Stinsons work for a good number of people, including myself. I wish the toe box was a little wider but its acceptable for me. You might want to give the Altra Olympus a try, they work well for some folks.

    Great review! Looking for something that combines the elements you liked in these two shoes...Coming from North Face Fastpack I Mids, which have been my go-to due to narrow heel and wide toebox, but want something more cushioned for 30km+ days on varied terrain (I do a 12+ day long distance hike every year or so, e.g. the C2C and GR65 in France). The Fastpack's downfall is definitely traction, especially on wet rocks, so I won't be using the Stinson thanks to this review, but may pick it up for easy dayhikes at home on forgiving terrain...Keep up the good work!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, good to know about the Fastpack - haven't tried them yet. And yea, the Stinson is great for long days and well groomed trails. Otherwise you'll want something a little more aggressive.

    I use Altra Provisions (yeah, I know it's a road shoe and probs won't hold up - but it is SO darn cushy and ideal for dry weather) and they looks better (and cheaper) than either of these HOKA products. Heading to Mt Charleston Peak this weekend - Altras don't fail me now!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, my main shoe is the LP 5 - just tried the HOKAs when my foot was injured but mainly back on the LPs now. Will be interesting to see how the road shoe does. Have fun on Charleston, it's a great hike.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. You saved me from ordering a non-wide version of the speedgoat shoe. Also appreciate the comments on traction between the 2. I went with the speedgoat because traction matters a lot to me.

    I don’t have any foot problems and have a normsl arch. I think out of sll the reviews you have given, I am leaning towards the Altra olympus 4. I do hikes near cities in San Diego. And the only big hikes I plan on foing would be Baldy, Gorgonio, etc The wide toe box and the grippy bottoms seems to do it for me. Not sure if the zero drop is necessary for me. The only weird thing cuz I ran a few marathons snd halves before is my right index toe can get mildly numb sometimes. Thoughts?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried the latest Olympus, but the older ones were decent for me. And not sure about the toe thing though. Might make sense to visit REI and try a few on, see what feels best.
