Symphony X - Russel Allen - one of, if not THE best vocalist in the business. Michael Romeo - one of, if not THE best guitarist in the business... not just for his playing though; he writes the orchestration for the songs as well.
Arjen Lucasson (Ayreon) says he is the best singer in the world alive. I agree that he is the best in his singing style I have ever heard. Devin Townsend is super awesome as well but different. There are these "one singer, 18 voices" challenges here on youtube, which are really good, but I never saw anybody dare to imitate one of those two. Maybe they don´t know ''em, idk. Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian is also veeery good and unique, but a little bit less diversified.

Another absolute classic! Probably my favourite album of theirs, too. It’s worth doing in its entirety like you did with Scenes from a Memory. I do feel the that the first Accolade is probably a better track, though. Great job, guys!
3:47....yeah Kel, it does that to me too. Crazy, i don't think I had ever listened to this. I love this band but aside from a couple of albums, I haven't heard most of their earlier stuff. This is on my next-to-buy list. (P.S. I used to be in a band with Lou Gramm's brother!). Not sure if you've done this yet but you guys gotta check out their album V: The New Mythology. It's SX's Images & Words and should have made them household names in the prog world. In my opinion, these guys are as good as DT, but perhaps not quite as varied.

Ohhh man. I’ve been addicted to The Great Escape for the past two months. This is my favorite epic song right now. It used to be a tie between A change of Seasons and The Odyssey, but The Great Escape took the first spot. I love absolutely every second of that song. 30 minute masterpiece

When digging Nightwish and Symphony X, you should sort out Dutch guitar virtuoso Arjen Lucassen's project Ayreon. Has most folk of any importance from the Prog Metal scene as guest musicians. Better stock-up on supplies when going down that route because it might be a couple of months before you emerge again, with singers from Dream Theatre, Symphony X, Magnum, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Epica, Blind Guardian, etc. Aryeon albums to check, amongst others, are "01011001" (Liquid Eternity, Beneath The Waves) and The Source (The Day That The World Breaks Down). Ayreon's albums all form a story about the inhabitants of a planet where technology has run amok and folks are trying to pick up the pieces. And speaking of Magnum; lend your ear to Sacred Hour from their 1982 Chase The Dragon album.

If you want to experience something rather unique in this area of metal with prog elements and look for a bit of harsh vocals sneaking in as well while keeping this hopeless melodical theme and solid riffs then your next stop should be Constantine - The darkest grace . Its a 14 min fascinating long ride with all the good stuff prog metal has to offer composition and instrumental wise, those slowdowns and accoustic parts that adds to the song and bring new kind of energy , neat transitions with some definitely melodeath influences as well as classic heavy metal. Vocals are a bit edgy but they will grow on you, some parts are harsh but not necessary death but rather thrash. For the sake of not making a definition size word let's just call this again prog power metal 😃 Pls react to this man, it's so refreshing from a prog fan point of view at least.

As good as Dream Theater are I just can’t get into Labrie’s vocals.They are weak compared to what that band provides musically.The first time I heard Symphony X with Russel Allen’s voice there was no going back to DT for my Progressive needs.No offense to DT fans.It’s just my personal preference.

I actually agree. I'm a big Dream Theater fan but Russell Allen is a much more powerful vocalist than James LaBrie, especially live.
