This was probably my favorite dev video I’ve seen in quite a while.
Great concept to cover, great editing, and educational for all audiences regardless of skill level.
I’m a senior engineer and really enjoyed seeing the code quality differences and design decisions of the different price points and experience levels.
Honestly I think your site was the best but simply because the design was great. I think as engineers we often forget that the design and UX is the product. Nobody looking at your site or web app gives a shit about the code unless it’s a dev portfolio. As long as it works right 😂

Editing is absolutely amazing and super clean. How did you learn frontend? I struggle to make good UIs and yours and website 1 were very well made.
Glad you liked it! I initially learned through a few university classes on frontend development and UX design. Beyond that, it's mostly just been a lot of practice and consuming a lot of content online.
On the code side, I think the most important thing for learning in my case was making sure I could build things vanilla. Even if production code is going to use React/Angular/etc, learning to do things without those tools helps you get a much stronger foundation.
I don't consider myself a great designer, but I just try to think critically about problems. For instance in the example of this video, I realized that the artwork and heritage are the most important things so I focused on how to best showcase that. Another important step to take is to think about the user behaviors you want to happen. Understanding those will help you create a design that makes those behaviors easy and obvious for users to do. I've also been spending some time recently learning about things like color theory and fonts, which has been very helpful.
I love your simple vanilla version of the site, is there source code available anywhere so i can study it a bit since i'm not really familiar much with CSS animations and scrolling styling? Great video btw, liked
Also a very important thing which i don't understand why it wasn't in the video is responsiveness of the sites and testing them on mobile devices, would have been the most fun part of the video imo, also one of the most important ones :(

As for responsiveness, all of the websites were perfectly responsive. I originally planned to include showing the mobile versions as well, but it was just taking too much time so it had to be cut out to keep the video flowing better. Maybe I'll show them off in a short though 👀

I'm really interested in how you would go about making the animations that you mentioned in the beginning. Animation seems way too complex imo
I don't know exactly. But my first thought was to get a bunch of blob shaped SVGs in the colors of the flag to put on top of the existing animation. And those blobs could be animated at different speeds and change shapes a bit to give off that effect that it is paint dripping rather than just the hard edges that it has now.
And for painting on the text letter by letter, I'd probably just need a paintbrush icon and essentially trace the path of the font with a transform animation to make it look like it's being painted on. And lastly, it would also have to hide the portion that hasn't been draw yet, likely with a clip path.
Regardless of what implementation I chose, I think it would have taken a ton of tedious work that I didn't have time for.

Does a web developer need to be good at web design ?
When people ask a freelancer for a website, do they usually give him the design or he is supposed to do it ?
It depends. When working at a tech company, developers rarely do much in-depth design but it can be helpful to still know the basics. I think this is oftentimes a distinguishing factor between good and great frontend developers.
For freelancers, there are some that specialize in both design and development, and others who only do one or the other. The more common use case is probably to go to a freelancer with a complete design though (or to get a different freelancer to make the design to give to the developer). Maybe next time I'll give them all a copy of the same design and see the differences in their implementations of it 👀
