    It seems to me that a huge difference between him and the higher ranks he rolled with was confidence. If he had the confidence of the purple's/brown's/blacks he would be 50% better right off the bat. He didn't seem to trust that what he began to execute would really work. Trust the techniques you've been taught! I know it's hard to fake that sort of thing when they consistently beat you in class, but it's just an observation (and something for me to personally think about.)

    • @joserezende102
      @joserezende102 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is not the intention. The intention is show the technics, that's why he submits even Roy Dean, he did the right movements and prove that he knows, probally in a normal roll it didn't happen. (probally)

      He’s just becoming a blue belt. You can’t have confidence in your skills if they are still in the process of developing and being tested. With time he’ll become more sensitive and get even better. But from where I’m sitting, he was being treated so so kindly by upper belts. They were testing him for what he knew, but those upper belts purposely gave him positions and time to work submissions. As good as he is, they could have ran the gambit on him. Then when Mr. Dean comes on the scene, it’s merely about feeling his skill. That white belt couldn’t even weather the storm after all that rolling. He was smoked. And that’s when his true skills could come shining through. There’s a reason the instructor rolls last with him. It’s not to embarrass him. All in all he did well. Very good blue belt.

    wow... awesome i love BJJ and it seen like you really earn the belt with that teacher... not like others they just give it to you for the time you been practicing nice job...to the trainers

    • @mjolnir9855
      @mjolnir9855 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      monto721 exactly. There’s no other legit way to earn a belt than building up expertise in the art itself. Some just give the belt out for winning a tournament at your local Greg’s grapple barn. Legitimate JiuJitsu is developed through strong fundamentals and this gaining mastery. That sensitivity isn’t easily achieved, and should never be diluted down like the McDojo’s of Karate and Tae Keon Do has done.

    My club don't really have this type of precise examination. If our blackbelts decide someone is ready, they get a stripe or a belt. Still, i have to say i also respect this way of doing it. Very neat.

    Looks like hes really been practicing his throws and takedowns. He'll become really good when he gets a stronger foundation on the ground by controlling his opponents hips and keeping his hips/base low/spread

    What's amazing about jiu jitsu is 50 year old men handling men half their age and twice their vigor. A testament to economy of energy and skill trumping youth.

    Why does he have black stripes on the white side of his white belt? Wasn't it supposed to be white stripes on the black part of the belt?

      eifelitorn yes, heel hooks are illegal in most tournaments. but nothing is illegal in self defense. we are taught them early on to be aware of them. we rarely use them in sparring and if we do, we never fully apply them.

    Roy looks like one of the very best bjj coaches, and you can tell that he leads by example as everyone in his school seems like good guys who are there to help each other. Very similar to the jj I'm learning in GJJ. Is Roy trained by the Gracie brothers?

    This is such a good way to level someone up...With this method, current white belts can see what they are striving to be able to do at least in a flow roll situation. Every gym should have something like this but obviously it'll take more effort on the part of instructors so won't be a popular method

    Roy Dean is a master of distraction. I love the knee on belly at 12:43 and putting grips on the lapel, but really baiting for an arm bar. Masterful.

    Very crisp technique for a white belt. He definitely earned his blue promotion in my (humble) opinion. I wish I could train with Roy, wherever he is (probably LA or San Diego), but I live in a teeny little place in Oregon no one's heard of called Tumalo.

    • @FergusScotchman
      @FergusScotchman 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      pretty much, honestly. Another thing to consider is that the guy is exhausted after all that.... when you get tired, it is grueling to do the things you know you should do for good technique and position.

    • @tadams929
      @tadams929 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if your in decent shape, I have by no means his level of technique (also a white belt) but I feel you should have to do some strength and conditioning on the side at least for stamina. Still a casual (6-12 hours a week) but when we've had 4 hour classes we're all still going pretty good after 2ish hours of sparring. This was only 20-30 minutes, I feel maybe you should have to have a certain level of cardio.

      4 hour classes with 2 hours sparring and you're not gassed? What are you napping during them or something?
