  • I have been to a lot of fun auctions and have also worked at a few. Over time, I have realized several strategies to get good deals at gun auctions and have compiled a short list about them.

    Great tips
With tip #4, if something is mislabeled don't get hyped up thinking you're the only one to notice. There's been a bunch of times where I thought something mislabeled was going to go for cheap only for there to be multiple bidders and it ends up selling for the price it should have if it was listed properly.

That's definitely true. There can be others who will realize a mislabeling at the auction as well.

I’ve seen people at real estate auctions and farm auctions do what I call build a box they take a empty box stick it on the table and take stuff out of other boxes when they think no one is looking and put a x on it so they can buy the good stuff they wanted for themselves!!! When I see that happing I make them pay for that box buy running it up!!!

The best deals are at pawn shops and not auctions! Been doing it for years

Buyer premiums hurt the client. Some auction houses charge forty percent. * know the guns you want is good advice. It is hit and miss on how enthusiastic as house is on description. Some won’t list a serial number, which is critical on assessing the value. Many don’t bother to note it comes with original box- also affects value. I had some nice surprises when a gun arrives in the mail and the box is with it.
Ignorance of antique guns is rampant. Can pick up buys if you know some things about them

I had a guy I knew come up to me at an auction. There was a Winchester 94 coming up. He ask what it was worth. I worked at a gun store at the time. It was nice but was a Kmart contract gun. He said okay thanks. Then paid one and a half the cost of a brand new.

Yea, I've had auctions where you had to get the transfer done at the local gun shop, and people were paying more for used than if they had just gone over to the gun shop to purchase new. I'm not sure what some people are thinking during auctions sometimes.

    I made newbi mistakes.
I bid on a gun online and won, when I went to pay it was quiet a bit more. Turns out there was a 15 percent buyers premium for online bidding.
Second in person don't accept starting bid from caller, if nobody accepts the caller will drop the starting bid,,sometimes by a lot.
    And take earplugs, it's loud.
And yes, I've seen people bid way more on a gun than they could go down the road and buy new.

Yea, those buyer premium's can be pretty hefty add-on. I always have to do the math figuring out what I will actually pay by multiplying the bid by the premium.

Check websites such as globalauctionguide, auctionzip, and hibid. There may be a better site for you locally that will aggregate auctions and allow you to search for "firearms" or "guns" to check the different auctions pretty quickly.
