I changed "micro film" to "photograph" in my head. So I'm going to just go and try the types of photographs I want to make, potrait, studio, landscape etc. No more "yh... but I need a pentax 6x7 with a 200mm f/2 lens." Thanks for the creative boost in confidence!
Take photos every day of the things around you. Making mistakes is the best way to learn as some of those mistakes will be better than your original idea. Don’t believe people who say ‘this is how to …’, it may be the easiest way or the typical way but it may not be your way. Restricting yourself will develop your creativity - only shoot a certain format/B&W/at midday/ etc. (I started a 365 project on 01\03\2020, two weeks later I was trapped in my flat for 6 weeks but I still managed to get interesting images every day). Have fun! 👍🏻
Hit the nail on the head. I had the same conclusion when I realized I was not making anything. My ideas were too big and I wanted them to be too perfect. Now I use my wednesdays off to create a new video. It's very possible to make something small in a day, and its a ton of fun. Im on my 4th week right now, and like you said, its nice to have something concrete to look back on.
This is so real! Two of my brothers were visiting me over the summer and we just decided to go out and shoot a short trilogy. I had just bought some new camera gear and I was like why did I get this if I never use it to make the stuff I’ve dreamed of making if only I “had the right gear”. They aren’t perfect, but they’re cinematic masterpieces to us because we actually finished them!
This was useful, but for me, someone who will need to film 10 short films from the ideas I write within the past 2-3 years, (and the last one was around 2 years ago,), in order of a better headspace of when doing my 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th feature film, for micro/short films, I use the same thinking strategy when I need this or that, a good story to tell under 10 minutes or do one with a budget & under 40 minutes, depends on the scope, but yeah, it's a hard game, especially pitching it to a buddy or potential producer to help you in do it
Your video reminded me of a video I watched, that was talking about the most effective way to learns a new skill. The technique was to break down the subject into a number of smaller techniques/skills to learn, and then focus on them, rather than trying to learn the whole skill without knowing what you need to learn. Love the idea of making microfilms, focusing on different areas. Great Video, thanks.
Just subscribed! Love your perspective. I started doing hiking videos. One day I realized that a new camera wasn’t going to make my videos any better. Spent the winter trying new things and created a series of short “promo” videos where I focused on being cinematic, dramatic, or editing, or telling a story. Now I’m working on a full length movie that probably won’t suck 😂
Wow! What great advice. I think I have delayed so many times making anything because it can feel overwhelming. This microfilm concept is amazing. Thanks for sharing this concept!
This is a great topic that I believe many overlook. I've directed a few commercials that required a crew of 10-15 people including actors and micro films is the route I'm currently pursuing to better my craft. Those commercials were always what the customer wanted and its their vision, so it never really satisfied me as a creative. After many unfulfilling projects back to back to back, I took a 3 years hiatus from filmmaking and anything camera related. Finally found my passion back recently and micro films has been extremely satisfying and motivating. Also I think ultimately this will lead me to projects that better aligns with my vision.
I've been procastinating to edit my 12-minute-long short film, wish I experiment with microfilms more. Cause it was hard to figure out all those things while a crew of 10 waiting for me to. Now I realize that part of the procastination comes from avoiding to face my mistakes and re-living that stressful moments again. But learnt a lot, it's crazy. Should really start to treat mistakes as opportunities to learn things, rather than doubting myself. Thank you Hunter!
I recently did a more "cinematic" kind of video for an audition and honestly I enjoyed making it so much. I'm planning on doing more short film stuff, 1-2min long is more than enough to tell a story and practice your filmmaking skills. The only thing annoying to me is that I can't be in front of the camera and behind it at the same time lol.
This is so true for any form of art! I studied video game development in college. I learned more in one weekend game jam (make a video game in 48 hours) than an entire semester of programming class.
I really like this idea, and it mirrors one of the ways I learned to paint...doing A LOT of thumbnail paintings...so you don't get lost in the details, but take in the overall piece...because if it doesn't work tiny, making it larger doesn't help it any...it just makes a bad painting bigger. You did a great job of explaining how this concept pertains to filmmaking, and how doing a thing more times equates to getting more practiced at it. Great video...subscribed 👍🖖
I feel like the “big brotherly algorithm” of TH-cam TV has sent me this video as a cue to just start filming all of those micro film scripts that I’ve already finished earlier this year. I keep postponing their filming (and the subsequent editing) just ‘coz of a big upcoming project, and the fact that I’m gonna be insanely busy in playing my part and doing the meticulous work for that project has kinda restricted me from doing several other smaller/passion projects that I could’ve had done in this time. But f*** it, I’m gonna go multitasking once again just like my old days 🦾 So, thanks so much Hunter for posting this video! And I’m definitely gonna be tagging you whenever I’ll post those micro films on my channel this year, thanks again 🙌🏻
@@huntercreatesthings well that's where I read the story of the pottery class experiment. It's a really cool book, lots of great nuggets on art and creativity and the struggles involved in the journey. I think you could also make some nice content out of it for the channel. One of the hardest things to do, make an actual film. I've been learning, studying and improving my screen writing and editing skills for years, and I'm still saying "I'm an aspiring filmmaker" because I can't credit myself as a filmmaker without any films under my sleeve. I could learned all the theory, but in reality, I have no experience. I don't know where to look, who to call or how the hell I'll get the money. I often think I'm just lazy or that I can't compete with actual talented filmmakers out there, but watching this video made me feel like I'm not by myself, still waiting to become a filmmaker. But I already knew the answer; start making films. My question was always the same; "how?". I guess now I know how, start doing something, so thanks for the advice. Crazy that I still have to send a screenplay for my first short film in two weeks and I don't want to win because I'd have to make the short film🙂
I completely agree. I’ve been the film maker for years who spend all my time on TH-cam University learning and buying gear. Recently I’ve actually been making small films and it’s helped me learn so much and I think the micro film idea is a great way to learn and even have proof of work as a film maker 🙌🏽 great video
I connected with just watching and “learning”. I have done it so much. Made short films and shared with no one because it seemed like it was not good enough. TH-cam videos and never posted because to me it was not good enough. The idea of micro films and just making things because it’s fun was really inspiring just making tjust like all your videos thank you so much.
really good video, I think most of us in this space hate the idea or title of videographer because it feels less qualified but if we were being honest with ourselves we don't have the credentials or experience to even call ourselves "film makers" I think it takes a lot of humility to come to the point where we realize that we may not be film makers now and thats ok, nothing wrong with aspiring to that goal and nothing wrong with being a videographer. But making artsy short form content with a cinema camera does not make you a film maker lol. It's a title that sounds cool so we just like the label of it without knowing what it takes to make a full feature film.
As a fellow in the same bus...have your scripts ready. Even if you have nothing else script, screenplay and a basic document with some visuals + treatment wouldn't hurt.
Yesterday i got to a point in my shortfilm script that works for the story without being too long or hard to achieve, today i meant to continue on and follow my script outline to go futher with the story, but this was the first video i saw this morning. I think micro films is a good thing to test your creative ideas as well. It's much easier to make a minute long film perfect, to satisfy your perfectionism, than hoping to eventually make a 10-15min short as good. It's easier and more fun to perfect one simple idea, that came to your mind. Amount of work, time and money increases exponentially with the length of the film you want to make. I currently work on a bunch of ideas for such mini films, that will be realised in near future. Already scripted a couple, so it's just take it and make it. It's simple ideas are more like: "I know what I'm gonna do this week" rather than big project that I would have to make much longer and it may not be finished at all.
Lol this freaks me out so I force myself to make one AT LEAST once every 6 months, good or bad. Helps a lot to scare the lazy out of me to have a time limit. Still really hard to hold yourself to it when you really want to have something to be proud of and show people. I'm trying posting everything on TH-cam but that also makes me self-conscious bc then I show people everything anytime I want to show them one thing. Not sure if it's the move yet; further study required. Great idea with the micro-film stuff, tho, I've been thinking ab it since you first mentioned it. I'll have to give it a shot hmmm
In an experiment, researchers divided a Photography class into Students that had to take at least 1 photo a day + 1 Final Photo and those that had to produce just 1 Perfect Photo. In the end the group that took photos everyday had better skills. Edit: I wrote this before You brought up the Pottery example LMAO
I just get my friends together and shoot something for a few hours, it's way more fun than trying to organize a big shoot. It also lets me focus on creativity and I've won a few cinematography awards that way
Go make a short film with low/no budget and then afterward you will A. gain knowledge B. They're only chasing safety is a top 10 album tbh

Yeah, I agree 🙌
As amusing as the spoon is, I’m getting so sick of the “holding the microphone “ fad. Also, I have to go make some shorts now.
Tommy Wiseau makes movies, so can you.
